IntendedLearningOutcomes
After completion of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. Examine human rights in order to uphold such rights in a technological ethical
dilemma; and
2. Evaluate the ethical dilemma brought by technological advancement to society.
3. SLIDESMANIA.COM
Everyone in the society directly or indirectly uses
technology as our daily survival relies to the different
technological advancements. In general, technology
provides convenience, pleasure, happiness, and
communication that connects individuals and make
the society function efficiently and effectively as a
whole. However, the use of technology does not
always have positive effect. When do you think
technology becomes destructive to humanity?

Television
When television first became
popular in the 1940s and ‘50s,
many questioned its influence on
society, including differentiating
between informative programming
and shows made purely for
entertainment and distraction.
Televisions can serve as a platform
for advertisements and
information dissemination,
recreational activity, good stress
reliever, and a platform for
different propaganda and
advocacies.
However, evidence suggests that
there can be negative consequences
to prolonged watching of television.
Long-term studies have associated
higher rates of television viewing
with lower rates of high school
completion as watching television
can make attention spans shorter.
To combat this, it is suggested that
a balanced television diet is best
wherein we limit our viewing and
choose high-quality shows.

MobilePhone
A mobile phone is a wireless
device that was originally made to
make calls and send text messages.
Mobile phones have a lot to offer
to all users as there are additional
features that capture their
interests. Smartphones provide
better means of communication,
learning options, exposure to
trends, personality development,
etc.
It also operates as an
educational tool for institutions
that resorted to distance
learning due to the pandemic. In
the Philippines, millions of
people use mobile phones with
internet connections, and are
still growing continuously in
numbers.

Computer
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or data.
It can store, retrieve, process data, type documents, send e-mail, play
games, and browse the web. The computer can serve many purposes,
such as an aid for research, homework, and keeping in touch with others,
but it can also cause an individual to get lost in the virtual world.

Alan Turing is a British mathematician
and is coined as the originator of the
modern computer. He created the first
computer and is one of the most
influential code breakers of World War
II. He invented the idea of a Universal
Machine that could decode and
perform any set of instructions which
eventually became capable of running
any program.

Many people use desktop computers at
work, home, and school. It is designed
to be placed on a desk and is typically
made up of different components
including the computer case, monitor,
keyboard, and mouse.

The second type of computer you may
be familiar with is a laptop computer.
Laptops are battery-powered
computers that are portable and do
not include a lot of components.

Tablet computers are handheld
computers that are even more portable
than laptops. Instead of a keyboard
and a mouse, tablets use a touch-
sensitive screen for typing and
navigation.

Technological advancement can be viewed as a convenience for society,
but also has unintended consequences as an individual may lose social
skills due to being increasingly isolated from others. Provided an almost
unending source of resources, and educational materials, for individuals
without interacting with anyone.
People who are fixated on these technological advancements start and
end their day by using such devices. It causes them to become reclusive,
alienating themselves from other people.
Social media serve not only as a pastime but also as a chance for
exposure, especially for an individual who aims to be known in the video
game arena.
In the Philippines, education is sometimes neglected and compromised
due to online video games as some students become addicted and spend
most of their time in computer shops.

Robotics is the intersection of science, engineering, and technology which
produces machines or robots, that can substitute for human actions.
Society witnesses an evolved and expanded definition of robotics that
includes the development, creation, and use of bots that explore the Earth’s
harshest conditions, as well as robots that assist to law-enforcement and
even healthcare.
While the overall world of robotics is expanding, a robot has some
consistent characteristics:
1. Robot all consist of mechanical construction that helps them complete
tasks in the environment for which it is designed.
2. Robots need electrical components that control and power the
machinery that is needed to power the large majority of robots.
3. Robots contain at least some level of computer programming that gives
them the ability to know when and how to carry out a task.

In the 1940s, Isaac Asimov developed his famous “Three Laws of Robotics”.
He argued that intelligent robots should all be programmed to obey the
following three laws:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a
human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given to it by human beings except where
such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does
not conflict with the First or Second Law.
These three laws might seem effective to keep robots from harming people.
Asimov’s three laws address the problem of making robots safe but other
problems could arise if robots became sentient.
