ARE ABLE TO COMPREHEND AND ACTUALIZE THE
SIGNIFICANCE AND THE VERY PURPOSE OF OUR
EXISTENCE.
FORMULATING LIFE GOALS AND MISSION
STATEMENT
IF WE BELIEVE THAT WE SHALL MAKE AN ACCOUNT OF OUR LIFE ON JUDGMENT DAY,
THEN WE SHOULD CONSIDER IT A PERSONAL MISSION TO MAKE OUR BEST
CONTRIBUTIONS IN LIFE IN A MANNER THAT IS MOST PLEASING TO GOD. THUS, WE WILL
LIVE NOT ONLY TO SATISFY OURSELVES BUT ALSO TO BECOME A SOURCE OF HAPPINESS
TO OTHERS, MAKING LIFE GOALS THAT MAY BE LIKE THE FOLLOWING:
• MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE
• EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO REACH THE LADDER OF SUCCESS
• BEING AN INSTRUMENT IN HELPING MISERABLE PEOPLE FIND PEACE.
• SUCCEEDING IN A CAREER WHERE I COULD BE OF BEST SERVICE TO OTHERS, ETC.
A FATHER-HUSBAND CAN HAVE MEANINGFUL LIFE GOALS/MISSION STATEMENT LIKE:
• RAISING UP MY CHILDREN TO BECOME RESPONSIBLE CHRISTIANS AND CITIZENS.
• FACILITATING PEACE AND HARMONY IN THE FAMILY
A CHRISTIAN EMPLOYER/BUSINESSMAN CAN ALIGN HIS GOALS FROM OBSESSION
WITH MONEY TO OBSESSION FOR SERVICE LIKE:
• MAKE MY COMPANY AN INSTRUMENT FOR ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, EMPLOYMENT
GENERATION AND EMPOWERMENT OF PEOPLE
• SHARE MY COMPANY'S BLESSINGS TO OTHERS THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE
A REPENTANT SINNER CAN RE-ALIGN HIS LIFE GOALS AS:

• BE A WOUNDED HEALER, SHARE TO OTHERS THE LESSONS I'VE LEARNED FROM LIFE
SO THAT THEY TOO WILL FIND THEIR RESURRECTION TO A NEW LIFE.
ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT:
A WELL-ALIGNED DIRECTION, GUIDED BY MEANINGFUL AND
PURPOSEFUL LIFE GOALS AND VALUES IS WHAT GIVES REAL
MEANING TO LIFE. THEY SHAPE MAN'S LIFESTYLE, HIS
DECISIONS AND BEHAVIOR.
DEVELOPING A PROFESSIONAL GROWTH PLAN
A PERSON CANNOT ALIGN HIS CAREER UNLESS HE HAS ALIGNED HIS PERSONAL LIFE, HE
KNOWS WHAT HE IS HEADED TO, WHAT HE WANTS AND HOW TO GET IT. MANY PEOPLE ARE SO
FOCUSED ON THEIR CAREER BUT THEIR PERSONAL LIFE IS IN A MESS.
CAREER GOALS MUST BE ALIGNED TO ONE'S PERSONAL MISSION AND LIFE GOALS. IF A
PERSON HAS A PERSONAL MISSION OF MAKING HIS LIFE MEANINGFUL AND MEMORABLE, HE
WILL ALIGN HIS CAREER TOWARDS THAT DIRECTION. HE WILL PROBABLY CHOOSE A JOB WHERE
HE CAN MAXIMIZE HIS SERVICE TO OTHERS, MAKE DECISIONS THAT WILL NOT ONLY SERVE HIS
PERSONAL INTERESTS AND WILL ALWAYS BE RIGHTEOUS IN HIS ACTIONS AND DECISIONS.
AS A STARTING POINT IN YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH,
MAKE YOUR PERSONAL MISSION-VISION STATEMENT. THIS REPRESENTS YOUR
DESIRED ULTIMATE OUTCOME-WHAT YOUR LIFE STANDS FOR AND THE
CONTRIBUTIONS YOU WANT TO MAKE. EXAMPLE:
MY PERSONAL MISSION
TO MAXIMIZE MY CONTRIBUTIONS IN MAKING THIS WORLD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE
IN BY REACHING OUT TO OTHERS WITH THE USE OF MY GOD-GIVEN TALENTS AND
RESOURCES.
MY ULTIMATE VISION
I ENVISION MYSELF COMING FACE TO FACE WITH MY CREATOR, HAPPY TO MAKE AN
ACCOUNT OF MY CONTRIBUTIONS IN THE MISSION THAT HE HAS ENTRUSTED TO ME.
ONCE YOU ARE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR LIFE MISSION-VISION, PROCEED TO
THE PLANNING OF YOUR CAREER.
THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IS PLANNING
YOUR CAREER DIRECTION. THIS ENTAILS THE FORMULATION OF YOUR
CAREER GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS AND THE ACTIONS YOU NEED TO TAKE
TO ACHIEVE THEM.
TO ARRIVE AT WORKABLE ACTION PLANS, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO
RECOGNIZE WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO YOU, WHAT YOU WANT AND WHAT
YOU NEED TO DO. THEN ASSESS YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES SO
THAT YOU CAN MAKE RIGHT CHOICES, THOSE THAT BEST SUIT YOUR
PERSONALITY, TALENTS AND INNER RESOURCES.
YOU NEED A GROWTH PLAN TO SERVE AS YOUR GUIDE
A GROWTH PLAN IS LIKE A MAP THAT STATES THE DIRECTION TOWARDS WHERE YOU DECIDE TO GROW BOTH
IN YOUR PERSONAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE WITHIN A GIVEN PERIOD OF TIME.
THIS GROWTH PLAN CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS:
1. INVENTORY OF ASSETS, LIABILITIES, OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS
• THE ASSETS INCLUDE ONE'S TALENTS, ABILITIES, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES AS WELL AS AVAILABLE
RESOURCES-MONEY, CONTACTS, MATERIALS, ETC.
• LIABILITIES INCLUDE WEAKNESSES, PERSONAL HANDICAPS, SKILLS DEFICIENCY.
• OPPORTUNITIES ARE EXTERNAL FACTORS IN THE ENVIRONMENT WHICH FACILITATE GOAL ATTAINMENT. FOR
EXAMPLE: OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK ABROAD, SCHOLARSHIPS MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS, JOB
OPPORTUNITIES, ETC.
• THREATS ARE THOSE THAT SERVE AS STUMBLING BLOCKS TO GOAL ATTAINMENT.
2. INVENTORY OF RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS
• WHAT ARE NEEDED TO REALIZE GOALS? THESE INCLUDE PERSONALITY ATTRIBUTES, REQUIRED
COMPETENCIES, EDUCATIONAL AND ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS, ETC.
3. ACTION PLAN
• THIS CONSISTS OF SPECIFIC MISSION-VISION STATEMENT, LONG TERMS GOALS, SPECIFIC
OBJECTIVES, AND ACTION PLANS THAT WILL BEST RESPOND TO THE MISSION AND THE GOALS. THE
PLAN MUST ALSO DESCRIBE THE MECHANICS OF IMPLEMENTATION LIKE WHEN AND HOW IT WILL
BE DONE, WHO WILL BE INVOLVED, ETC.
• ALL THIS INFORMATION PROVIDE THE BASIS FOR EFFECTIVE GOAL-SETTING AND ACTION PLANNING.
A PERSON MUST KNOW HIS STRENGTHS, LIMITATIONS AND INNER RESOURCES SO THAT HE CAN
PLAN WAYS OF USING HIS ASSETS TO HIS BEST ADVANTAGE, IMPROVE HIS WEAKNESSES AND
OVERCOME THREATS FOR GOAL ATTAINMENT. HE ALSO NEEDS TO KNOW WHAT IS REQUIRED TO
REACH CERTAIN GOALS SO THAT HE CAN PLAN WAYS TO MEET THEM.
PERSONAL INVENTORY LEDGER
JUST LIKE AN ACCOUNTING LEDGER THAT STATES ASSETS
AND LIABILITIES, YOUR PERSONAL INVENTORY LEDGER
WILL STATE YOUR PERSONAL ASSETS AND LIABILITIES
NOT NECESSARILY IN TERMS OF MATERIAL THINGS BUT
INNER RESOURCES LIKE ABILITIES, TALENTS,
STEPS IN PERSONAL/CAREER PLANNING
1. PREPARE A PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT.
THIS MUST STATE WHAT YOU WISH TO ACCOMPLISH FOR A MEANINGFUL CAREER. A
MEANINGFUL MISSION STATEMENT MUST NOT BE CONFINED TO SATISFYING PERSONAL
NEEDS. YOU WILL FIND GREATER MEANING IN LIFE WHEN YOU AIM FOR SERVING OTHERS
THROUGH THE CAREER YOU HAVE CHOSEN.
EXAMPLE OF SERVICE-ORIENTED MISSION STATEMENT:
TO PURSUE A CAREER IN TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT SO THAT I BECOME INSTRUMENTAL
IN EMPOWERING PEOPLE FOR A BETTER FUTURE.
2. FORMULATE LONG TERM GOALS
NO SUCCESS WILL EVER BE REALIZED WITHOUT GOALS AND ACTIONS. ACTIONS MUST BE
DIRECTED TOWARD GOALS AND GOALS MUST BE ESTABLISHED FROM WELL- EXAMINED
REALITIES AND SENSIBLE VALUES SO THAT THEY BECOME REALISTIC, ATTAINABLE AND
MEANINGFUL.
PERSONAL/ CAREER GOALS MUST BE:
S - SPECIFIC
M- MEASURABLE
A - ATTAINABLE
R - RELEVANT
T – TIME BOUND
S-PECIFIC
EXPRESSED AS SPECIFIC SKILL, COMPETENCE OR ACHIEVEMENT ONE WISHES TO ATTAIN. FOR
EXAMPLE:
• TO PURSUE A CAREER IN NURSING OR HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT WITH HIGH
ACADEMIC GRADES;
• TO COMPLETE A MASTERS DEGREE IN 3 YEARS;
• TO GRADUATE WITH HONORS, STAYING IN THE DEAN'S LIST UP TO MY GRADUATION;
• TO BE AMONG THE TOP 5 IN SALES IN MY COMPANY;
• TO SET UP MY OWN BUSINESS WITHIN 5 YEARS; TO ACCOMPLISH AT LEAST 90% OF MY SALES
TARGETS.
GOALS WHICH ARE GENERAL ARE NOT FOCUSED AND COULD NOT BE ACCOMPLISHED. FOR
EXAMPLE: TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER. THIS IS TOO GENERAL. LONG TERM GOALS BUT MUST
BE ACCOMPANIED BY SPECIFIC SHORT TERM GOALS.
FOR INSTANCE, TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER REQUIRES SHORT TERM GOALS LIKE: 1.
GRADUATING WITH HIGH GRADES: 2. COMPLETING THE REQUIRED PRACTICUM WITH A
PRESTIGIOUS MANUFACTURING FIRM;
M-EASURABLE
• GOALS MUST BE STATED IN QUANTIFIABLE TERMS SO THAT ONE CAN ASSESS OR
MEASURE ACCOMPLISHMENT VS. GOALS OR TARGETS. IN THE EXAMPLES ABOVE, THE
SPECIFIC MEASURABLE TARGETS ARE MENTIONED LIKE: FINISH THE COURSE IN 4 YEARS,
GRADES NOT LOWER THAN 85, MEET 90% OF TARGETS.
A-TTAINABLE
• THEY CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN THE LIMITS OF ONE'S COMPETENCE, RESOURCES,
TIME AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS. TO AIM TOO HIGH BEYOND ONE'S CAPACITY LEADS
TO FRUSTRATION AND DISAPPOINTMENT.
• BEFORE MAKING GOALS, ONE MUST EXAMINE HIS INNER RESOURCES LIKE TALENTS.
ABILITIES, LIMITATIONS AS WELL AS STRENGTHS, ASSETS, OPPORTUNITIES AND THREATS.
DO NOT AIM FOR A GOAL WHERE THERE ARE UNMANAGEABLE LIMITATIONS. OTHERWISE
YOU ONLY BECOME DISILLUSIONED AND FRUSTRATED.
R-ELEVANT
• THEY RELATE TO THE ISSUES THAT THE STUDENT OR PROFESSIONAL FINDS IN THE WORK
ENVIRONMENT. FOR EXAMPLE, AIMING FOR A PROFESSION WHERE THERE IS HIGH
DEMAND, INVESTING IN A BUSINESS WHERE THERE IS A REAL MARKET. RELEVANCE OF
GOALS AND ACTION PLANS ARE USUALLY SUPPORTED BY EXISTING DATA IN THE WORK
ENVIRONMENT, SUCH AS DATA ON SUPPLY AND DEMAND, HAZARDS AND CONSTRAINTS,
ETC.
T-IME BOUND
• MUST STATE THE TIME OR DURATION OF ACCOMPLISHMENT. FOR EXAMPLE: COMPLETE
COURSE IN 4 YEARS, APPRENTICESHIP IN 6 MONTHS.
3. IDENTIFY THE REQUIREMENTS TO ATTAIN YOUR GOAL
• THEN ASSESS YOUR CAPACITIES TO MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS.
4. ESTABLISH SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ATTAINABLE AND RELEVANT OBJECTIVES IN RELATION TO EACH GOAL.
• THE GOALS MUST ALSO RESPOND TO THE REQUIREMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IN NUMBER 3
5. PREPARE ACTION PLANS
• AFTER IDENTIFYING THE REQUIREMENTS, DETERMINE THE STEPS, STRATEGIES AND THE ACTIONS YOU WILL TAKE TO
SATISFY EACH REQUIREMENT. THIS IS YOUR ACTION PLAN. IT MUST INCLUDE A TIMETABLE FOR ACCOMPLISHMENT -
WHEN TO START AND WHEN IT IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED..
6. IDENTIFY NEEDED RESOURCES
• IDENTIFY WHAT RESOURCES ARE NEEDED - SUPPLIES, MATERIALS, MONEY, ETC. HOW MUCH?
• HOW MANY?
• WHERE WILL YOU GET THESE RESOURCES?

FOR EXAMPLE: • TO PURSUE A CAREER IN NURSING OR HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT WITH HIGH ACADEMIC GRADES; • TO COMPLETE A MASTERS DEGREE IN 3 YEARS; • TO GRADUATE WITH HONORS, STAYING IN THE DEAN'S LIST UP TO MY GRADUATION; • TO BE AMONG THE TOP 5 IN SALES IN MY COMPANY; • TO SET UP MY OWN BUSINESS WITHIN 5 YEARS; TO ACCOMPLISH AT LEAST 90% OF MY SALES TARGETS.   • 16. M-EASURABLE • GOALS MUST BE STATED IN QUANTIFIABLE TERMS SO THAT ONE CAN ASSESS OR MEASURE ACCOMPLISHMENT VS. GOALS OR TARGETS. IN THE EXAMPLES ABOVE, THE SPECIFIC MEASURABLE TARGETS ARE MENTIONED LIKE: FINISH THE COURSE IN 4 YEARS, GRADES NOT LOWER THAN 85, MEET 90% OF TARGETS. A-TTAINABLE • THEY CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN THE LIMITS OF ONE'S COMPETENCE, RESOURCES, TIME AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS.
