RESOURCES-MONEY, CONTACTS, MATERIALS, ETC.
• LIABILITIES INCLUDE WEAKNESSES, PERSONAL HANDICAPS, SKILLS DEFICIENCY.
• OPPORTUNITIES ARE EXTERNAL FACTORS IN THE ENVIRONMENT WHICH FACILITATE GOAL ATTAINMENT. FOR
EXAMPLE: OPPORTUNITIES TO WORK ABROAD, SCHOLARSHIPS MADE AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS, JOB
OPPORTUNITIES, ETC.
• THREATS ARE THOSE THAT SERVE AS STUMBLING BLOCKS TO GOAL ATTAINMENT.

MEANINGFUL MISSION STATEMENT MUST NOT BE CONFINED TO SATISFYING PERSONAL
NEEDS. YOU WILL FIND GREATER MEANING IN LIFE WHEN YOU AIM FOR SERVING OTHERS
THROUGH THE CAREER YOU HAVE CHOSEN.
EXAMPLE OF SERVICE-ORIENTED MISSION STATEMENT:

14. 2. FORMULATE LONG TERM GOALS

• TO PURSUE A CAREER IN NURSING OR HOTEL AND RESTAURANT MANAGEMENT WITH HIGH
ACADEMIC GRADES;
• TO COMPLETE A MASTERS DEGREE IN 3 YEARS;
• TO GRADUATE WITH HONORS, STAYING IN THE DEAN'S LIST UP TO MY GRADUATION;
• TO BE AMONG THE TOP 5 IN SALES IN MY COMPANY;
• TO SET UP MY OWN BUSINESS WITHIN 5 YEARS; TO ACCOMPLISH AT LEAST 90% OF MY SALES
TARGETS.
GOALS WHICH ARE GENERAL ARE NOT FOCUSED AND COULD NOT BE ACCOMPLISHED. FOR
EXAMPLE: TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER. THIS IS TOO GENERAL. LONG TERM GOALS BUT MUST
BE ACCOMPANIED BY SPECIFIC SHORT TERM GOALS.
FOR INSTANCE, TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENGINEER REQUIRES SHORT TERM GOALS LIKE: 1.
GRADUATING WITH HIGH GRADES: 2. COMPLETING THE REQUIRED PRACTICUM WITH A
PRESTIGIOUS MANUFACTURING FIRM;
16. M-EASURABLE
• GOALS MUST BE STATED IN QUANTIFIABLE TERMS SO THAT ONE CAN ASSESS OR
MEASURE ACCOMPLISHMENT VS. GOALS OR TARGETS. IN THE EXAMPLES ABOVE, THE
SPECIFIC MEASURABLE TARGETS ARE MENTIONED LIKE: FINISH THE COURSE IN 4 YEARS,
GRADES NOT LOWER THAN 85, MEET 90% OF TARGETS.
A-TTAINABLE
• THEY CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED WITHIN THE LIMITS OF ONE'S COMPETENCE, RESOURCES,
TIME AND OTHER CONSIDERATIONS. TO AIM TOO HIGH BEYOND ONE'S CAPACITY LEADS
