5. Why it’s a problem:
• There are not nearly enough authentic learning experiences in
schools and that is because they face resistance in several areas to
their implementation.

• Most classroom time is spent using convention teaching methods
which require lower level thinking and don’t connect the knowledge
to the application.

experiences.
This includes having students:
• Publishing newspapers electronically.
• Making and editing films.
• Creating podcasts.

• Some schools have incorporate a capstone project as a graduation
requirement.
• Others require their teachers to update their curricula and integrate
relevant tools ( i.e. 3D printing and electronic games).
• Schools offer professional development for teachers on these
technologies.

What is it?
• “Digital Literacy is the ability to use information and communication
technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information,
requiring both cognitive and technical skills.”

• Many people considered to be “Digital Natives” lack basic skills such
as the ability to identify verified digital information.

• Many countries, such as India, lack internet access and digital literacy
training.
• Experts seek to bridge this digital divide.

• Governments around the world are trying to come up with a standard
definition of “Digital Literacy” and a common index for measuring it.
• Some countries such as New Zealand have set in motion legislative
acts that will make digital fluency curriculum compulsory in schools.

• Some schools have empower teachers integrate digital literacy by
providing free courses and access to digital equipment
• Common Sense, is a US-based nonprofit organization, that offers
teachers a K–12 digital citizenship program with grade-differentiated
lesson plans and toolkits on topics including internet safety, privacy
and security, information literacy, and copyright.
