Reading & writing 5-digit numbers
• 1000 = one thousand
• 10 000 = 10 thousand (ten thousand)
• 100 000 = 1 hundred thousand (one hundred thousand)
Example 1:

A: Twenty-three thousand, five hundred and sixty-seven.

9. Rounding and estimation
Example 1:
Round to the nearest ten.
Look at the digit in the ones place.
If it is 1, 2, 3 or 4, round to the smaller ten.
If it s 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, round to the greater ten.
Q :Round 42 to the nearest ten.
A : 42 is 40 when rounded to the nearest ten.
42 ≈ 40
10. Example 2
Round to the nearest hundred
Look at the digit in the tens place.
If it is 1, 2, 3 or 4, round to the smaller hundred.
If it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 round to the greater hundred.
Q : round 1387 to the nearest hundred
A : 1387 is 1400 when is rounded to the nearest hundred.
1387 ≈ 1400
11. Example 3
Round to the nearest thousand
Look at the digit in the hundreds place.
If it is 1, 2, 3 or 4, round to the smaller thousand.
If it is 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9, round to the greater thousand.
Q : round 7300 to the nearest thousand.
A : 7300 is 7000 when rounded to the nearest thousand
7300 ≈7000
