KEY CHALLENGES:
►►
Collaboration with St. Mark’s and the design team during pre-construction to develop specific logistics plans to allow the major demolition and structural work to occur while students and staff were in adjacent buildings. The loud and disruptive work was coordinated around the academic schedule; work often needed to occur before the school day began, or later in the afternoon, once classes ended.
►►
Development of building information models of the underpinning and shoring design of the facade and basement space, to communicate the extent of the design scope with the subcontractors, and to use as the basis for in- depth constructability reviews. By resequencing shoring work, the team was able to efficiently underpin the foundation, while performing facade support work, and so save time and money.
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
As partners in St. Mark’s implementation of their 2020 Strategic Plan, we are building the physical improvements to the campus’ complex of interconnected historic buildings that are the heart of the campus. One of the first of these projects—the recently completed 12,500 sq. ft. Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning—was a fast track, gut-renovation of Forbes Hall, that reconfigured outdated and under used spaces.
The Center, designed to enhance teaching and learning for both students and teachers, includes group study, mentoring and presentation rooms, administrative offices, and the integration of technology to facilitate 21st century learning. The work involved the intricate demolition and construction of building components connected to adjacent, historic buildings, where construction needed to be carefully planned and managed to respond to the needs of a year-round campus. This two-phased project encompassed the renovation of five interconnected buildings: Red Hall, Administration Wing, Taft Hall, Forbes Hall and the Math Wing. The scope of work also included ADA accessibility improvements, installation of a new elevator, M/E/P system upgrades, the re-configuration of spaces and new interior finishes.
The Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning is the result of the gut renovation of historic Forbes Hall.
