3. POETRY
–literary work in which the
expression of feelings and ideas is
given intensity by the use of
distinctive style and rhythm;
4. Poetry is always characterized according to
the following:
Poetry attempts to achieve beauty.
Poetry is imaginative, or makes use of the
strength of imagination.
Poetry is musical, melodic, and rhythmical.
5. Poetry makes use of language that is
metaphorical or symbolic, not direct.
Poetry is more concentrated than prose.
Poetry makes use of brevity and
conciseness.
6. 3 Major categories of Poetry
1. Narrative poem
- tell stories
- They may be short and simple.
- Others are long and complex.
8. 2. Dramatic poems
Employ dramatic form or elements such as
dialogue or characters, instead of just a single
speaker or persona.
Ex. Romeo and Juliet, Eliot’s The Love Song of J.
Alfred Prufrock
9. 3. Lyric poems
-are brief in structure and subjective in
expressing the thoughts and emotions
of the persona, the speaker of the poem.
-the words in these poems could be lyrics
which are strongly melodic.
11. Elements of Poetry
1. Imagery
-it is the literal representation of an experience
or object that is perceived through the senses.
-It is represented in language in a way that we
can see, smell, hear, taste, touch, or feel it as
our imagination allows.
12. 2. Figurative language/Figures of speech
-are devices that help beautify or make the
language more poetic than it already is.
Most commonly used figures of speech:
Simile
Metaphor
Personification
Onomatopoeia
13. 3. Sound
- A poem should be read aloud to reveal its
true merit.
- The rhyme scheme and the meter that a
poem employs add to the sound of the
poem.
14. 4. Persona
-The speaker of the poem but it’s not
necessarily the poet. In many cases, poets
create a persona who speaks the poem in
the first person.
15. Transforming ordinary information
into creative nonfiction
Now that we understand more about global
warming, we need to make our children realize
how important it is for them to do their part in
protecting the environment. Examples are
saving on electricity and water, using paper bags
rather than plastic bags, and recycling paper.
16. Global warming is a reality. And it is here.
Now that we have finally understood this,
we have no more excuses for inaction. Let
us begin with our children. Let us make
them aware that the environment is also
their responsibility.
17. Directions: Write a four-line-stanza poem
using this title, I Am. In this short poem,
write about your thoughts about yourself-
your character, fears, and virtues. You can
also write about your dreams and
aspirations.
