A Public Relations campaign myself and two other college classmates researched in the Spring of 2019. Our goal was how we could change to overall image of a specific focus within the college.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARYThe Department of Interdisciplinary Studies is part of the College of Arts and Science at New Mexico
State University (NMSU) In Las Cruces, New Mexico. It Is the newest program at New Mexico State
University. The program was created to teach students that one single major cannot cover the
complexities of an entire field.
It provides a variety of degrees in Bachelor of a Applied Studies (BAS), Bachelor of Individualized
Studies (BIS) and Gender & Sexuality Studies Program.
The department does not currently have social media accounts, they solely have an announcements
section on their NMSU page.

RESEARCHResearch within Public Relations is extremely important in implementing accuracy and
credibility within a campaign. We began by conducting secondary research first, and primary
research second.
Our company used formal research to figure out the amount of students that were informed
about The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS). We conducted research via
Facebook to conclude the results shown in the next slide. We set up polls over a course of 24
hours to ensure numerous people would communicate back to us through the power of
social media.
Informal research was conducted in order to get in contact with an individual within The
Department of Interdisciplinary Studies.

RESEARCH
● 70% of students chose NMSU
because of low tuition prices.
● 40% of students surveyed
said they were unaware of
The Department of
Interdisciplinary Studies.
● When considering majors, students
said passion and pay were main
factors.
● 30% of students said they
would consider joining The
Department of
Interdisciplinary Studies.

8. CURRENT IMAGE
PROBLEMS
Students and faculty already have pre-
assumed the department solely carries
to student athletes as opposed to non-
student athletes.
There isn’t sufficient awareness about
the department.
9. PAST PROMOTIONAL
EFFORTS
The Department of Interdisciplinary Studies
has held two different events for its Gender &
Sexualties Studies major: The Feminist Border
& Arts Film Festival (receives more than 2000
film entries) and The Transnational Solidarity
Day.
Gender & Sexualities Studies currently has its
own publication called The Social Justice Zine.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Students that have an
associate degree or a number
of credits that are equivalent
to an associate degree.
Students who are looking to go
beyond traditional academia
and who are interested in
studying multiple perspectives
rather than focusing on one
discipline.

IMAGE CHANGE
The department previously had an image of
catering more to student athletes as they were
able to create their own schedules. One of our
goals is to change that image of being
exclusively for athletes but rather serving
students who want to shape their own
educational path.
13. THEMES & MESSAGES
Our theme involves taking risks and trying something new
that isn’t currently a popular choice. We encourage
students to be trailblazers and pave the way for more
students who might be interested in taking control of their
own career path. As our motto states, we ask of those who
are curious of interdisciplinary studies to Be Bold. Shape
Your Own Future!

STRATEGIES & TACTICS
- Posting important news and event dates on social media, as
well as keeping the public educated about relevant day-to-
day information.
- Hosting events at places such as high schools where we can
speak to the students about the program, specifically
targeting the graduating class.
- Have articles about the program be featured in newspapers.
This includes on and off of the NMSU.
- Write press releases about bigger upcoming events.
15. 1
MEDIA
- Our media use relies heavily on the internet,
specifically through the use of the website
and social media such as Facebook and
Twitter.
- In addition, we also have pamphlets
containing all important information which
are available at the main office and are
passed out at events.
- We plan on reaching more students through
social media. Social media gives us
additional platforms in which student
engagement becomes more likely.
16. 1
MEDIA
The Department of Interdisciplinary
Studies page on the NMSU page is
overall great, however, the News &
Events tab needs a slight facelift. We
suggest changing that section to a link
to social media accounts instead. Social
Media accounts are perfect platforms
where you can let the public know about
upcoming News & Events!

Plan Execution
One of our main goals is to change the image of the department being designed
exclusively for athletes. The program is for students who would like to shape
their own path and design their own degree program. Through the use of social
media, the department website, and large informational events, we plan to
advertise the program and encourage students to venture into the often
overlooked world of interdisciplinary studies.
