I am slave and City of men

Jasmine Collins
Analysis of I am slave
How is ‘I am slave’ funded?
By the national lottery
What production company produced ‘I am slave’?
Film 4 and film agency for wales.
At the start of ‘I am slave’ you can hear shouting and fighting which is a lot different to a Hollywood
film, they haven’t put any music at the start to make it more dramatic, they have showed real emotion
at the very start of the film before you even see any of the characters. But when the film does start it
starts in Africa where a tribe are fighting, they are the ones that are fighting, there is lots of colourful
clothing and face paints also. It shows the culture in Africa. There are lots of Third world cinema
conventions in this film such as;
-The main characters are not well known
-There is child slavery (so this is one of the social issues that this country has had to face)
-Child abuse (another social issue)
-It follows an emotional story of suppression and slavery
-There are a lot of ethical issues
-The dark and depressing music, which reflects the mood of the main character and other characters
-When there are scene in Africa there is a use of earthy and colourful colours but when she is taken
to the UK to be a slave and isn’t happy the lighten is very dull and dim to reflect her mood
‘I am slave’ compared to City of
men
•

Although I am slave and City of men are both set in counties that
are experiencing poverty and social, economic and political issues,
they are in different ways. For example I am slave is mostly about
slavery and the abuse she is put through as a child when she is
taken from her home, but City of men is based around gangs and
violence. Also City of men is subtitled where as I am slave is all in
English which makes it more authentic. City of men is also set in
Brazil in the favelas where as I am slave is set in Africa where there
are tribes and then England in the city. Also City of men shows the
how corrupt the police are in their country and I am slave does not
show anything like that. Another thing is that City of men also shows
aspects of drugs and thieving.
