Using Hudl for american football...in Norway! Hudl is a film review tool (and much more) for many sports. This presentation explains how we can use it for american football teams in Europe - specifically Norway.

3. My background using Hudl
• Used film as an important tool for many years, including long before use of
Hudl
• Started using Hudl during 2012 preseason
• Admin for several Hudl accounts, both clubs and the federation. Hudl Gold
and Hudl Exchange accounts at this time
• Contributed with film review for several clubs from time to time. Also used
Hudl with regards to import recruiting
• Has had access to accounts of foreign teams (Swedish Superseries, junior
football, GFL, GFL2, US college football) and seen how teams outside of
Norway use Hudl

4. Why film?
• Analyzing own performances; practice as well as games
• Scouting other teams (system, tactics, players)
• Verification: Everyone can essentially see the same things
• Reviewing film isn’t the same as watching film...:
Film breakdown vs. Entertainment
• Fair competitive advantage when playing in a league where not every
team prioritizes film.
Hudl Exchange solution in Norway has to a certain degree given every
team here a chance to be on the same level with regards to this

5. Why Hudl?
• There are many available tools, but few (any
others?) as universally praised and at the same
time widely used as Hudl
• Relatively inexpensive
• More than «just» gamefilm
Internal communication, presentations, sharing of documents, reports,
playbook tools, highlights, SMS, instructional videos++

• Web-based: No one who’s reviewing film
needs to download specific software just for
using Hudl. Film can be downloaded!
• Specifically designed for football, fairly
customizable, many features, many platforms

8. Why Hudl, IV?
• You don’t have to all be in the same room... Huge
plus at our level and in our culture, where sports
is often at odds with other commitments, giving a
limited availability and mobility for team
members in a sport that in essence demands the
opposite
• Good support and access to information (blog,
email, facebook-page, Support-pages on website,
twitter, user at CoachHuey etc. etc.)

9. What’s happened @ Hudl past few
years(2012-16)?
• Grown both in football and by covering a vast amount of other
sports as well. 114.000 teams, 3.5 million users. Approaching 300
employees at HQ (Lincoln, Nebraska). Also offices in Omaha,
Boston, London(UK) and Sydney(AUS).
• Football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, Australian football, lacrosse,
hockey, baseball, wrestling, golf, track
• New products: Hudl Assist, Hudl Sideline, Hudl Technique, Hudl
Combine, Coda, Sportscode
• Lots of layout and tech adjustments; gradual over the years. ‘Play
Tools’ and ‘Tag a Game’ perhaps clearest improvements for football
past few years.

data!

with team prep gives an advantage when the time and
effort is spent

and competence is still at the core
• How many players (and coaches) that can’t
make practice 2-3 times a week will actually
find the time to review film in their own
home?
• What do players (and coaches!) actually see
when they review film? Has anyone taught
them what to look for, look at?

29. Hudl summarized:
• Hudl is a useful tool and worth the investment if
there’s a plan for using it and a willingness to follow
through
• Hudl is not worth the investment if only a select few in
the sports club understand it and are willing to use it
properly
• The federation Hudl Exchange account is useful, but
significantly more so when combined with a team Hudl
account
