A personmay interpretasymbol differentthananotherperson,itall dependsonthe
person’simpulseorwishinthe unconsciousmind. Sofar,we’ve readmanystoriesthatinclude a
large varietyof symbolism.The Devil andTomWalkerwasone those storiesthathad an
abundance of symbols. One of myfavorite symbolsin“The Devil andTomWalker”was the Old
Scratch (the Devil).Thissimple symbol broughtuponmanyotherimportantsymbolsinthe story
makingeachlittle detail averyimportantpartto the story.Thissymbol can be both seenas a
traditional symbol orasa metaphor.
Subsequently,atraditionalsymbol isasymbol thatmanypeople understand. This
symbol canbe interpreteddifferentbasedonthe person’sexperience inlifeorthe waythat the
personwasraised. The traditional level canalsobe tiedtogetherwiththe collective
unconsciousbecause of theirsimilarities. Inthe traditionallevel the OldScratchcan be seenby
an individualasa negative aspecttosociety,while anotherindividual couldsee the OldScratch
as a spiritwhosatisfiesotherswiththeirwishes.Inmyperspective Isee the OldScratchas an
evil spirit,whichwantscontrol overpeople totryto defeatJesusintheirwar. The OldScratch
can alsoresemble the fall anddominationof power. Inthe Bible,Satanwasanarchangel in
HeavenwhodemandedGod'splace andformeda rebellionagainstHimin Heaven.
Finally,in“The Devil andTomWalker”there wasmetaphorusedwhenusingthe Old
Scratch to representthe Devil. A metaphorissomethingusedtodescribe somebodyor
something,usingawordor phrase that isnot meantliterallybutitcompares to the personor
thing.Inthe story,the Devil representsevil,temptationandcontrol overothers. The
temptationof the personfallingintothe Devil handwasseenrepetitive throughoutthe story.
We firstsawit whenTomWalkerwas temptedintofallingintothe Devil’s hand.Then,we sawit
againwhenTom Walker’swife fell deeplyintothe Devil’shand.Thisrepetitivenessof this
symbol representsthe importance of itinthe story.

2. There are manysymbolsthatsurroundmylife.One of mymain symbolsthatI live byis peace in a
worldwithmyfamilyandlive,laugh,andlove forever. Myfamilyisa will alwaysrepresentabeautiful
unity. I see the symbol of myfamilyasa private symbol because everyoneknowswhatfamilyisbutI’m
the one that lives andexperiences laughsandourlove.My parentsand mysisterand I have a veryclose
relationshipwitheachother.We askfor opinionsfore verystepwe take,andalwaystry to agree to do
somethingtogether.Ibelieve thatwithoutourunity ourfamilywouldhave suchabig symbolism.
Like I saidbefore,Ilive bythe symbol of LIVE,LAUGH, ANDLOVE FOREVER. I believe thatwe
mustLIVE our livestosucceed.Success isone of the mostimportantthingsinmy life.Inorderforme to
be happyI must be successful,itcanbe educationallyorbyhelpinganotherindividual.Also,we shouldall
LAUGH at our mistakes.The onlywaythatI learnfrommy mistakesiswhenIlaughat them, because if I
don’tdo this,mymistake mightturnintoa tragedy. I alsobelieve thatwe shouldLOVEFOREVER;we
shouldlove ourfamilies,friends,andmostimportantlyourlives. Lovingsomethingorsomeone helps
each one of us have a purpose fordoingthings.Inorderfor youto love somethingorsomeone youmust
firstlove yourself.Overall,Ibelievethatthissymbol isalsoaprivate symbol because noone really
experiencedthisandmightsee LIVE,LAUGH,ANDLOVE FOREVERas just a saying,while Isee itas
somethingveryspecialinmylife.
