The document discusses how to innovate like Israelis by exploring Israel's culture of innovation. It describes how Israel's position between rigid order and random chaos has bred inventiveness. Key cultural drivers that fuel Israeli innovation are discussed, including adversity breeding innovation, Jewish values of tikkum olam and altruism, a pioneering spirit, diversity, and networks formed through the Israeli Defense Forces. Behaviors that generate high levels of adaptation include being a smart risk-taker, improvising, thinking critically and creatively, and constructively debating ideas. The document advocates clarifying one's purpose, being bold and disruptive, collaborating in innovation ecosystems, and thinking and acting differently to challenge norms.

Editor's Notes
Welcome to the webinar- how to innovate like an Israeli
Thanks for investing your time and energy today in exploring how innovate like an Israeli, especially in light of the chaos being caused by:
The rate of unprecedented change and range of recent unpredictable and random events happening globally.
Accelerated by the current global COVID-19 pandemic, & other major events, are causing, which are disrupting our status quo in what as become a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous) world.
Where some of us, are seeking fresh, proactive and innovative ways of adapting and growing ourselves, by innovating for tomorrow, and cultivating foresight for the future.
Israel provides an evidence based, economically successful model for being Innovative, for flowing and flourishing with the challenges of the 21st century.
It is a great example of a tiny and unique country that has managed to flow and flourish with all of these factors, I had the opportunity to experience and research why this might be so and am happily sharing m findings and experiences with you today:
So you too, can learn how to better flow and flourish in uncertain times by being innovative.

Aim
Themes and Benefits
Understand how Israel provides a microcosm for 21st century exploration, which is replicable, for individuals, teams, communities and organisations to model.
Know and learn from the cultural drivers of the successful Israeli innovation phenomena
Be willing to o adapt, grow and innovate by taking the best of what Israeli innovation offers, and some of ImagineNations key ingredients for its secrets sauce in enabling people, teams and organisations to adapt, innovate and grow through disruption.
As many of you are no doubt aware, the successful Israeli ‘Start Up’ phenomenon has been discussed, debated and dissected in many articles, books and webinars over the past few years.
I became passionate about wanting to know the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ of Israeli innovation, and to seek ways as to how others could benefit from this knowledge and teachings.
While many doom and gloom articles often dominated world media headlines, and Israel is in a constant state of anxiety and conflict, I decided not to give way to fear, but to explore the possibilities and the bigger picture by looking at what Israel start-up entrepreneurship and innovation is ‘really’ about.
Many of Israel’s problems are created from the outside and Israel’s successes come from within, allowing Israel to be noticed and defined by its collective successes and unique culture, some of which I will share with you today.
What are some of the current disruptive patterns and trends occurring globally & why is it important to see, understand and flow with them?
Covid-19 Pandemic has caused global chaos resulting in higher levels of stress & anxiety from peoples reactive responses to uncertainty and insecurity and emerged as both a black swan event and as a wicked problem.
We are also at the effect of exponential change, driven by technological innovations, which are transforming our workplace as we adopt automation and AI technologies, & people are required to increasingly interact with ever-smarter machines.
The new world of work is shifting the leadership and teaming paradigms, putting collaboration, innovation, focussing on the need for purposeful, sustainable & equitable organisations.
“The type of disruption most companies and government agencies are facing right now is a once-in-every-few-centuries event. Disruption today is more than just changes in technology, or channel, or competitors — it’s all of them, all at once. And these forces are completely reshaping both commerce and defence”.
Steve Blank https://hbr.org/2019/10/
POLL – HOW MANY FO YOU HAVE BEEN TO ISRAEL, AND ON WHICH PROGRAMS?
Why is it important to see, understand and flow with these trends?
Israel is in a constant state of chaos , disruption and exponential change, and yet it flourishes
Joke about VUCA
Israel story - how Israel became my model and inspiration
In 2010 my husband and I, left a very safe, secure and abundant haven, Sydney, Australia, and relocated to one of the most challenging, and most innovative, ‘hottest spots’ on earth, Israel.
This massive change process saw us:
Shift from two regular monthly incomes, to almost no income at all!
Experience a series of enormous physical, spiritual and emotional disruptions to what had been a pretty placid and ‘comfortable’ lifestyle in Sydney’s North Shore.
Make such a huge life change when the majority of our peers were mostly ‘burnt out’ and ensconced in grandchildren and developing financial pathways to retirement?
Exposed to a completely new and diverse ‘East meets West’ culture?
Learning a complex and challenging - modernised - ancient language?
Adapting to a new work ethic, a new currency, a different climate and a completely new lifestyle.
Combine this with the reverberations of the Global Financial Crisis, the geopolitical instability resulting from the ‘Arab Spring’ and the Euro Economic Zone Crisis; we saw our lives start to spin ‘out of control’.
I realised very quickly that I would need to manage my own change process, so that I could succeed and flourish in this ‘new and challenging world’. This offered me an incredible opportunity to use my own change process to transform my career, to flip my own game and to re-imagine and re-invent myself and my business.
Israel is my inspiration and model for Innovation where:
Authentic entrepreneurship emerges spontaneously,
Cutting edge inventiveness leads to evidence of success,
‘Out of the box’ thinking is a ‘way of life’!
Generative debate delivers results beyond expectations!
What do we mean by culture and why does it matter?
Culture is described as the way things get done in a family, team, group, organisation or country
Current culture drive the results families, teams, groups, organisations and
Culture is formed and expressed by the “messages” that get sent through (focus, behaviours, artefacts and systems) especially by leaders
Israel is a young country, is still in an early stage of its cultural evolution.
This tends to make it more flexible and adaptive, nimble and responsive to change, as well as a hot bed of inventiveness and entrepreneurship.
This suggests that Israel is still developing its own unique pattern of shared basic assumptions
Working to solve its problems of external adaptation due to the high level of adversity it constantly faces.
Working to solve its problems of internal integration due to its essentially shifting and migrant population.
Therefore, Israel is not bounded by any one accepted or correct way to perceive think and feel in relation to its problems.
This inherently brings about another set of challenges including national disunity on all of the political social and religious fronts.
Yet, it also suggests that the Israeli culture is a ‘melting pot’ of extreme differences, and as a young country, is still in an early stage of its cultural evolution.
This tends to make it flexible and adaptive, nimble and responsive to change, as well as a hot bed of inventiveness, experimentation and entrepreneurship, as its people explore common ways of perceiving, thinking and feeling.
Innovation is about culture where new technology emerges, where in Israel, the culture enables and facilitates innovative technological innovations
Necessity is the mother of all invention
It is often said that Israel has more missiles pointed at it than any other country on earth.
There is an inherent national ability to:
Take personal and shared responsibility for what happens here, socially, politically and economically.
Speak up and state their point of view, and to be heard.
Be spontaneous, inventive and to improvise, often under stress.
Review key points on slide
Israel has an adverse environment, that is supported by the power of an intentional and co-petitive economic cluster, a passion for achievement and a desire for excellence.
Where People are incredibly courageous and audacious and willing to take intelligent and intrinsic risks to get things done.
Israeli's are intrinsically motivated to do work that is meaningful, things that really matter and that make a difference, creates a sense of deep ownership when it comes to solving a Problem
The only common denominators to all of its Jewish inhabitants are Jewish history, ethics and religion. This forms the basis for what I call Jewish Peoplehood.
Review key points on slide
There are many definitions of chutzpah and node are definitive
People tend to be willing to:
Make astute judgements about threats and uncertainties with or without data.
Face and master their personal ‘fears of failure’ and will generally navigate to contain their fears.
The outcome is that overseas investors tend to adopt a ‘risk friendly’ confidence that Israel will always honour, or surpass its commitments.
Case Study Intel Story
Picture of Dov Frohman, CEO of Intel Israel, who retired in 2001 has been a major source of inspiration for the development of ImagineNation. In his book, “Leadership the Hard way”, he describes the biggest leadership experience of his career, as his decision to keep Intel open during the 1991Gulf War, when scud missiles rained down on the entire state of Israel, and the govt recommended that all businesses close down. He chose to keep Intel open because he was convinced that shutting down their operations was a direct threat to the long term survival of the company. Amazingly, 80% of Intel's employees showed up for work those days.
His 3 key principles of leadership have imbued the Israeli entrepreneurship culture:
1. Ensure the survival of the company against any threat to its long term viability.
2. Lead against the current, by being unconventional and opposing peoples points of
view.
3. Pay attention and look out for random opportunities.
He also suggests that there are limits to the best laid plans and that it is impossible
to anticipate risks.
Strong tolerance to risk
Israeli culture is a “melting pot” of differences & is recognised as a cultural ‘salad bowl’ that is a hybrid fusion consisting of more than 70 different nationalities - not including sub cultures - all thrown together within a short time frame of 65 years.
People focus on what needs to happen to provide a secure place on earth for the Jewish people
Underlying this is an unconscious pervasive message and ‘never again’ mindset.
Which manifests as a strong national unity when under threat.
Networks for life, an affiliative or friendly way of life, cultivated by the education system and also by the ICF.
PROBLEM SOLVING IS A WAY OF LIFE IN ISRAEL,
starts early, in the IDF, when soldiers are forced to find cross disciplinary solutions to specific military problems.
People tend to;
seek tactical innovation ideas from the bottom up,
cross any kind of boundary.
They will turn norms upside down to catalyse radical and counter intuitive ideas.
At ImagineNation™ we have drawn inspiration from how Israel provides the world with a microscopic, adaptive and replicable example of:
How to adapt, innovate and grow within a adverse, discontinuous, and volatile environment.
How to use these as levers for creativity, invention, and innovative change.
Inspired initially by the Israeli innovation model, at our Melbourne based innovation consulting services, we teach, train and coach your people and teams to step over their business as usual thresholds, and open them up to a new world of conscious, creative and commercial possibilities.
We help organisation find opportunities in uncertainty, get ahead of the social, technological, and political trends defining the future of business, leadership and teams, to enable them to adapt and grow, carve out new opportunities and build resilience to be successful and sustainable in a dynamic and disruptive VUCA environment.
Our focus is on the people side of change led innovation – by helping you align your strategy, systems, people and technology, to make innovation a habit and a way of life – by building your people’s confidence, capacity and competence to creatively meet the challenges of the future head-on.
What do we mean by being, thinking and acting differently?
Mindsets drive behaviours, which drive results!
Mindsets influence the way people seek to fulfil their purpose and strategic mandate. How we capture how we connect with ourselves, how we think, feel, make choices and decisions.
As well as on the behaviours and actions we take and the results we get.
Mindsets are unconsciously managed by our autonomic nervous system.
Mindsets are a key part of our personalities and are based on our belief systems.
At ImagineNation™ we focus on coaching people to cultivate and master the innovation mindsets that enable them to be-come a constant learner, an agility shifter and a disruptive provocateur. This is the basis for generating discovery & learning.
What are the key mindsets for innovation and why are they important?
Introducing the Innovation Mindsets – Coming from an empty mind and open heart.
The Beginner Mindset
Is the core fundamental toward cultivating an open mind, heart and will, which are required to let come and let go, to create the empty space for cracks, openings and thresholds that allow new ideas to emerge.
It is about being open, childlike & inquisitive, being willing to unlearn, shifting to awe & curiosity.
It involves being playful, allowing things to be and not needing to be in control, or in
The Loose Mindset
It requires “not knowing” and being fully present, composed and detached and embodying an empty as well as learner’s mind.
It means that its okay to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
It means being willing to explore uncertainty, constraints and threats as opportunities from a whole person and whole systems perspective.
What are the key mindsets for innovation and why are they important?
Introducing the Innovation Mindsets
The Imagine Mindset
Involves being able to shift from a work-place to a play-space mindset, in pursuit of novelty, and a childlike wonder in being willing to toy with ideas and other key elements of the system, when engaging in learning, creativity and innovation.
Play is purposeless, free and fun.
It is energizing, relaxing and easy.
It is unpredictable and imaginative.
It involves the pursuit of delight, amusement, novelty and wonder.
It involves magic, illusion and serendipity,
It is a dynamic and often improvisational process that creates the space for more play in the system.
It allows for the development of new perspectives, ways of being and thinking.
It unleashes new roles, develops new capacities in people.
The Gamer Mindset
Is about taking risks like a gamer, and applying your optimism, creativity, courage and will power to solve the problem and win the game.
It is about being confident and empowered to expect adversity when;
Challenging Convention means understanding conventional reality and being flexible and confident to disrupt, challenge and provocate existing paradigms and in the box thinking and behaviours.
Permitting Failure means allowing people to play, improvise, experiment and take intelligent risks. It means valuing what people do when trying, iterate and pivot different approaches that may or may not work. It means not blaming, shaming or punishing people when they make mistakes or fail.
Embracing Diversity means being transparent, encouraging and facilitative when looking outward, out of existing paradigms and out of the office. It means being open to insights and ideas, new information and experiences when interacting, teaming and networking with others.
