followers, we all of the Silky family express you a warm welcome & wishes. We would like to express our
gratitude to all readers who showered love and encouragement to the September Edition which boosted
our morale.
A year filled with memories, which is coming to an end, bringing another new year with new
hopes and challenges at its doorsteps. In the year 2022 after the devastating Covid 19 wave subsided,
the Eri growers of Assam took to Sericulture with great enthusiasm and reached a milestone in Eri
production. Additionally, to being able to generate income and support their family in a very short period
of time by taking up Sericultue has assured a positive ray of hope among the upcoming Eri growers of
the state. Woman is considered the backbone of a society. Growth of a society greatly depends on the
woman folk, therefore in Assam the development of Sericulture also lies in their hands. They are the
torch bearers and future of this age old practice greatly depends on their positive approach and
expertise.
Moreover the Assamese youth should take over this avocation as primary occupation instead of
leaving their homeland in search of employment. Then only we can think of a self reliant sustainable
Assamese Community as a Whole.

“Saraswati Eri Spinning Machine”
In this edition we are covering The story of
"Saraswati Eri Spinning" machine Inventor Sri
Satish Choudhuri. He is presently awarded as
'Resham Samvabana Award 2022' at 100 years
Celebration of Govt. Seri Farm Titabar.
A personnel interview has been taken for
our reader to know his work and future plan.
1. How and when did your family get involve with
Sericulture & Handloom Sector?
- Namaskar,I am Satish Choudhury.I am a resident
of Village Satpakhili, Palashbari Revenue Circle,
Kamrup(Rural). Presently I am associated with
Sericulture & Handloom sector along with my wife
Smti Anjaliprova Choudhury and daughter Sara
Choudhury. I started my work in 2012 with only
two looms. With time my handover fabrics got
such publicity that I was encouraged to move
forward in this sector and now with six(6) looms I
am managing a small organization named
‘Saraswati Handloom’. As the South Kamrup is
associated with sericulture I started giving priority
on weaving Eri fabrics. At that time to get smooth
supply of Eri yarn I started developing a foot
operated spinning machine. It started gaining
acceptance among the Eri growers whom I
supplied the machines on demand. After a while I
improvised the device with electric and electronic
devices and with minor changes, I named it
‘Saraswati’ and released it into the market. At
present, this machine has been able to leave a
mark in rural economy of South Kamrup and a
number of weavers have been benefitted.
2. What circumstances led you to the thought of
developing a customized Eri spinning?
For higher production of Eri yarn machines are the
need of the hour which is not possible with the
traditional ‘Takuri’. As I had some technical
knowledge, I tried to develop a machine which

৭/ভিৱষ ত িকবা পিৰক না?
----মন টা ৱ ব দুৰ ল ল যায়। কিৰব লগীয়া
ব ত আ ছ । িব শষ ক এই আপু গীয়া ৰচম খনত
ব কাম এিতয়াও কিৰব ল আ ছ। মাৰ এই সং যাজন
এক ু য়াস মা থা। িকছ অসুিবধাৰ বা ব কিতয়াবা
থমিক ৰব লগীয়া হয় যিদও কিতয়াও হতাশ নহও ।
চৰকাৰী প ৰ পৰা যিদ বজাৰৰ িদশত আ িকছ িকছ
ত সহ যািগতা আগবঢ়াই তিতয়া হ ল এই ৰচম

Therefore, the ‘Saraswati’ came into the picture
instead of the ‘Takuri’ after a lot of
experimentation from my side.
3. Your Saraswati Eri Spinning Machine has been
able to draw attention of Eri Rearers in large
scale. How many machines have you supplied till
now?
- At present I have manufactured/assembled
around five hundred (500) numbers of ‘Saraswati’
and distributed among the Eri weavers.
4.What is the capacity of the machine?
- Yes, this work totally depends on market
demand. A skilled spinner can span around 25-30
gm of Eri yarn per day on Saraswati.
5. Is the process of acquiring Patent is moving
forward?
Yes, the proceedings for ‘Patent’ have been
initiated. I believe that it will be done soon.
6. Have you approached the Government
authority to include the machine in Government
Projects in pilot basis?
We have officially approached the CSB to include
this machine in Govt. Projects.
7. Any future plan?
I dream of getting a positive attitude from the
authorities. When problem arises, I don’t get
disheartened. I need only encouragement and
inspiration for my work.

1. A Retired teacher, Sri Lalit Boruah is an avid Silkworm rearer from
Nahartati Village, Mahmora block, Charaideu. Photos showing his
Mulberry silkworm rearing (Late Autumn crops). He is engaged in rearing
of Eri Silkworm as well.
2. Members of Milijuli Farmers Interest Group (FIG) under world Bank
financed APART Scheme are actively engaged in Eri rearing activities,
They Harvested around 11000 Eri Cocoons. FIG location-Khariabheta
Village, Sapekhati Block, Charaideu.
3. Naba Gogoi, Anupam Gogoi, Tinku Gogoi and Jiten Gogoi of halwa Village
are jointly rearing 300 dfls of Eri Silkworm Grainage (1500 cocoons) done

Sericulture. Smti Mwina Bodo and her Friends ( Mainawsree Group)
from Dara Gaon, Sudempuri, Baksha, BTR Produced 45 kg Eri Cocoons
in the last crop.The Group is involve in Sikworm Rearing, Spinning,
Weaving sector as well as in Agriculture, Poultry, Veterinary also. They
are looking forward to do more in Sericulture with the Modern

has produced 1 kg Eri DFLs from 8000 nos Cocoons for Katia Crop
and he distributed to the Eri rearers of the district as well as outside
of the district too. he have very good knowledge & experience on
Muga, Eri and Mulberry rearing It is notable that Sri Joradhora is a
best Muga rearer of Lakhimpur District too.

Smti Moina Deka from Ghagua, Morigaon District is a Progressive Eri rearer
involving in the sector since 2015-16. Now days she is actively engaged in spinning
sector. She has earned 8000 rupees (Aprx) by selling good quality seed cocoons to
ESG, Oujari of Morigaon recently. Based on her requirement, The Dept. of
Sericulture Morigaon provides her a Spinning Machine and using the machine she
spins high quality Eri yarn which gave her a handsome amount of rs. 2600/-kg (Apx)
This amount greatly helps her family to manage their financial stability, Based on
the increasing market demand of Eri clothes, Ms Deka is interested in extending
her activities from spinning to weaving of Eri Clothes and the Department of
Sericulture, Morigaon is always trying best to extend support to progressive
farmers like Ms Moina Deka to fulfill their dreams and spread awareness and
importance of Silkworm rearing in the society.

Happy to Share with you all that, CMG Samelangso , Sericulture Center
under the O/o ADS, Diphu is developing very fast with good nos. of Som
plantation for Muga Silkworm rearing and kesseru plantation for Eri
Silkworm Rearing. This Centre will be a boon for all traditional Eri

“Women’s Development” is the newest bandwagon in any developmental policy.
Women are the backbone of development of any nation. Contribution of women in the
development of silk industry in India from time immemorial is noteworthy. It is indeed
important to be cautious, but not to the extent of driven inactivity. The role women
play in sericulture is so crucial that we cannot plan for the growth of the industry
without making every effort towards upgrading the skills of the women Sericulturists.
Qualities of women folks like instinctive behavior, care, concentration, devotion and
dedication prove to be very essential for the delicate silkworm and other related
activities.
The silk ‘Queen of Textile’ is an expression of a whole network of social
relations of production, covering a vast arena with all the major development issues,
including those relating to women empowerment. In different components of
sericulture i.e., from soil to silk, approximately 50-60 per cent of different activities
like cultivation, silkworm rearing, and reeling, twisting and weaving involvement of
women need to be strengthened and encouraged. It is not because women have more
than 60 percent of the labour force in sericulture, but also it offers a plethora of
opportunities for improving the social status of women. The dominance of female
population in sericulture is hereditarily evolved. In spite of showing tenacity and
persistence, their hard work remained unnoticed and they still remain as unpaid
workers. However, this image has changed considerably in recent years regarding the
role of women in sericulture owing to the significance of the critical operations that
they perform as well as their share in the production value.

In the light of the fact that clearly emerges is that women can generally be
trusted to perform their duties with utmost care and attention. This is more so in the
case of agriculture and allied activities. No wonder women are playing a very
important role in the sericulture industry. Sericulture industry has opened up
phenomenal employment avenues and helped women to become important players in
the decision-making process whether in the household or in the community at large.
The active involvement of women is crucial for the success of any community
development activity. This has been proved on many occasions all over the world
more so in the developing countries.
A woman is considered as home makers in India. They spend 16–18 hours a
day working at home and outside, but still their contribution is not given weight age.
Indeed, women have to bear double burden in the development process as they play
triple role i.e . production, reproduction and community roles. Their substances of
economic contributions as family workers are not separately accounted. This failure
to recognize the role of women in the development process results in improper
designing of developmental programs. Participation of women in the important cash
crop like sericulture has always been an important strategy for poverty alleviation and
livelihood security. Women can be firmly believed to perform their responsibility with
great care and attention. This is more in the case of sericulture. Sericulture provides
ample scope for making women independent socially, economically and politically.
Conclusively I would like to convey a message that perhaps gone are the days of
apathy and shyness and the days ahead for women in sericulture is full of zeal and
zest.

COLLEGE OF SERICULTURE TITABAR
Sri Sanjit Kr. Bordoloi, Jorhat
The First Sericulture college of North East & Assam will be soon established in
Titabar. A few days back The state Cabinet has allotted more than 22 crore for its
establish which is a very positive step towards the development of Sericulture in
Assam. This was a long impending demand of establishing the college in Titabar. Its
foundation laying ceremony was laid by the then Assam Chief Minister Late Tarun
Gogoi and the present government has gone a step further by taking steps for
implementing the proposed project for which they deserve applause and gratitude.
Titabar is regarded as the hub of Sericulture as the first Sericulture Farm was
established in 1919 whose Centenary Celebration has already being carried out
recently. Moreover First Sericultural Training institute of NE was established in Titabar.
Therefore the news of Establishment of Sericulture College at Titabar has brought a ray
of hope to the glourious Sericulture industry. But, there are some queries that are to be
taken care of the authorities, like the graduates of this college will be absorbed in
which cadre of in Govt. services and what will be the fate of the trainees who pass out
from the Sericulltural Training institute Titabar.
Titabar is a well-known Eri producing Area and it is also known as an Eri pocket
of Jorhat District. A medium Eri Spun mill is already established in Kokrajhar. In private
sector, Two (2) Eri Spun Mills have been established in Boko (Kamrup) and Demow
(Sibsagar). The Eri Rearers of Titabar and adjoining area will be highly helped if a
medium spun mill is established in Titabar also. Hope the local MLA and the public of
Titabar will look into the matter.
