3. Definition of
Fracture
A break or disruption of the
normal continuity of a bone.
Causes:
◦ Direct blows
◦ Sudden twisting motions
◦ Crushing forces
◦ Extreme muscle
contractions

4. Types of
Fracture:

5. 1. Complete Fracture
Involves a break across the entire cross-section of the
bone and is frequently displaced (removed from its
normal position)

6. 2. Incomplete Fracture
Involves a break through only part of the cross-section of
the bone.
Example: greenstick fracture (one side is broken and the
other side is bent)

7. 3. Comminuted Fracture
Produces several bone fragments

8. 4. Closed or Simple Fracture
Characterized by intact or no break in the skin

9. 5. Open or Complex Fracture
Characterized by disruption of skin integrity
High risk for infection

10. 6. Compression Fracture
A bone compressed by other bone usually occurring in the vertebrae

11. 7. Depressed Fracture
A bone fragment driven inward, usually seen in the skull

12. Clinical Manifestations:
Pain
Localized edema and ecchymosis
Deformity
Shortening of the affected extremity
Crepitus (crumbling sensation)
Loss of function

13. Emergency
Management
1. Immobilized the body part immediately after injury, if
fracture is suspected, before moving the patient.
2. For lower extremities: bandage the legs together using
the unaffected leg as splint for the injured extremity.
3. For upper extremities: the arm should be bandaged to
the chest, or may be placed in a sling.
4. Assess neurovascular status distal to the injury for
peripheral tissue perfusion.
5. For an open fracture: cover wound with sterile dressing.
DO NOT PUSH BACK THE BONE.

14. Medical Management:
1. FRACTURE REDUCTION – restore bone fragments to
correct position and alignment.
◦ Open Reduction - involves surgery to align bone fragments
◦ Closed Reduction - is performed by manual manipulation to align
bone then cast application

15. CAST
◦ is a rigid external immobilizing device that is molded
to the contours of the body.

16. TRACTION
◦is the exertion of a pulling force to immobilize
a fracture.
