19. A talk by Angus McNicol of
Wessex Charity Consultants
20. The advantages and disadvantages of such a career
move;
Talk about my main area of activity which is helping
charities to find Trustees and achieve a well run Board
and I will provide an example of what is now a reasonably
well balanced effective Board at WESC Foundation where I
am a Trustee.
Talk about a new charity that I have helped found which
was registered in December 2016 which is a
collaboration between three complementary
organizations.

25. Personality traits/skillsets that I would want to see in the
Trustees that I recruit for Charities:
● Skill base to include an Accountant type, a Lawyer, a person with sound business
experience and a PR/Marketing expert.
● In addition, skills to support the type of charity which might include background in
Care/Education/Medicine plus potentially a user of your services including a
Parent. Other skills like Land Agent/Surveyor depending on type of charity.
● In general people who listen rather than broadcast their views.
● People who are prepared to ask thoughtful probing questions, but in a friendly
manner thereby being skilled enough to follow up the questions to achieve clear
answers.
● A diverse Board in every way.
● Let the Chair emerge from the Board rather than trying to appoint an outside
Chair.
● Trustees to serve no more than three terms of three years.
27. Stress issues/possible career changes.

Editor's Notes
In this talk which will last around 15 minutes I would like to cover the following:
Explain how much my eyes have been opened over the last eight years having moved in 2010 from 30 years in the Legal profession to working with Charities both as a consultant and as a Trustee.
Talk about Trustee Recruitment and how to achieve a Board that functions really well consisting of the right balance of people.
Go through with you an example of a new Joint Project between two charities that I have helped set up called Topsham Adventure Centre which was registered as a Charity in December 2016.
