Companies in the future will need to operate in different ways to today. Attracting, developing and retaining staff who understand their personal impact upon the economic, cultural, and environmental aspects of society will be ever more important. Our focus is on the links between Culture, Innovation, Sustainability and Customer Experience and what we, as individuals and organisations, are able to do to make this a healthy ecosystem.
3. CREATING A HEALTHY ORGANISATIONAL ECOSYSTEM
A BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM
▸ Starting in the early 1990s, James F. Moore originated concept of a business
ecosystem.
▸ An economic community supported by a foundation of interacting organisations
and individuals—the organisms of the business world. The economic community
produces goods and services of value to customers, who are themselves members
of the ecosystem. The member organisms also include suppliers, lead producers,
competitors, and other stakeholders. Over time, they coevolve their capabilities
and roles, and tend to align themselves with the directions set by one or more
central companies.
▸ Those companies holding leadership roles may change over time, but the function
of ecosystem leader is valued by the community because it enables members to
move toward shared visions to align their investments, and to find mutually
supportive roles.

PURPOSE
▸ Sir Christopher Wren, walked one day
unrecognised among the men who were
at work upon the building of St. Paul’s
cathedral in London which he had
designed. ”What are you doing?” he
inquired of one of the workmen, and the
man replied, “I am cutting a piece of
stone.” As he went on he put the same
question to another man, and the man
replied, “I am earning five shillings
twopence a day.” And to a third man he
addressed the same inquiry and the man
answered, “I am helping Sir Christopher
Wren build a beautiful cathedral.”
