Wynne Jones Redevelopment Scheme
The goal of this project was to redevelop the outdated Wynne Jones
Building, which currently has a number of functions. After assessing
the opportunities set out by Newcastle City Council in terms of devel-
opment and funding, the decision was made to create a digital business
centre in the form of a techHub, backed by funding from Newcastle
City Council’s Urban Core Development Scheme. In addition to this,
the Wynne Jones Building already houses a business start up facility
known as ‘The Hatchery’. This presented the perfect opportunity to
create an innovative new development in the Wynne Jones Building.
The modernistic design of the building is largely influenced by suc-
cessful tech companies such as Google and AutoDesk, both with no-
tion of natural lighting penetrating the building via the glazed curtain
walling externally, and the idea of promoting planned serendipity by
encouraging casual collision to spur on the next big idea; this approach
coupled with open internal spaces is the core basis for the ideology of
the NU Tech Centre.
