Instructions toTeachers.
Pre-listeningwarm–up activity (No paperwork isto be handed outto trainees. Stages1-3 are blind listening)
1. Write an anagramor somethingsimilarof the tool onthe board suchas P_W_R /
S_R_WD_I_ _R. Then,elicitaverbal descriptionof the tool.Then,putthe picture of the tool
on the OHP (File:POWERSCREWDRIVERIMAGE).Thisgivesthe traineesapictorial context.
Elicita verbal descriptionof the tool –shapes,colours,partsetc.Elicita verbal descriptionof
howit isused.Warm-upcomplete.
2. Put traineesingroupsandget themto brainstormonpaperor whiteboards Technical
Vocabularythatthey predict will be heard – outline specificcategories - nouns,adjectives,
verbs, how it isused etc. Project the table belowon to the boardor print out for each
trainee. ElicitfromTraineesthe potential dangersandsafetyprecautionsassociatedwith
thistool. TRAINEES HAVECOVERED THIS TOOL IN THEIR TB LESSONS IN YEAR ONE. IF YOU WISH THEY MAY REFER TO
THEIR BOOKS.

Asktraineestolistenforanyvocabularytheyhearwhichis technical andgetthemto write

Withminorpromptsand guidance withspelling,traineescorrectspellingandmeaningsof
generatedvocabulary usingdictionaries.Partsofspeech are confirmedusingthe dictionary
and the vocabularyplacedinthe correct columnsabove.
4. Give trainees ‘TraineesHandout1’. Allow themtime toreadandanalyse the questions.

5. Focusing the traineeson the listeningtask: PROJECT THE QUESTION SHEET ONTO THE
OHP FOR CLASS DISCUSSION.Elicitwhetherthe questionsare ‘Open’ or‘Closed’.Elicitthe
‘Time’of the questionseg.NOW,ROUTINES,PAST,FUTURE etc. Identifyauxiliaryverbs. Link
the grammar to unitsof Headwaystudiedinthe past. Elicitwhatinformation the questions
are requestingsuchasa Name,Location,Adjective etc. Elicitif questionsare about Dangers,
Tool Use or SafetyPrecautions.Thiscreatesa ‘contextualweb’ whichtraineescanuse to
‘trap’ the answerduringthe listeningactivity.
6. Playthe recordingasmany timesasyoufeel necessarytoallow the traineestoanswerthe
questions.
Key Vocabulary from listening activity:
function,turn in, screw, battery, slip,hand screwdriver,arm, tired,tool, push, point,hand,
charge, charger, mains, pluginto, overcharge,damaged, fail,hurt, less.
7. Afterthe listeningactivity,check the answers onfile:ANSWERSHEET. Then, play the
recordingandprojectthe script ontothe board so that traineescanreadthe script and listen
simultaneously. Atthispointidentifythe key vocabularyabove. The teachermay stopthe
