• Course Description:
This course is an English learning development experience. Students will be working with a partner, in group,
and with the teacher to prepare for English situations in a hospital or other clinical settings (where doctors,
nurses, and patients may require English). Activities and tasks include using medical terminology with English
language skills (i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking- LRWS). The course will be geared toward
building English language skills, and developing reflective practice for speaking in English situations. Particular
emphasis will be given to literacy & social skill development which meet the needs of a range of English
speaking patients in the context of clinical English terminology & discourse.
• Course Overview:
I am really looking forward to spending the semester thinking about teaching English and learning with you!
This course provides you with opportunities to develop your English expertise, with an emphasis on
literacy, pronunciation, and discourse (dialogue) in a clinical environment.
English is a complex language, and acquiring a good command of English occurs over a long period of time.
Even the most accomplished English Language Learner (ELL) continually works to improve their speaking
ability. One of the significant elements of this course will be to encourage you to think like an English speaker.
Thinking like an English speaker involves developing ways of observing, questioning, analyzing, assessing, and
analyzing English speaking situations, materials, and language acquisition theories.
• Required Course Text:
Caring for People (1st
Ed.) by Takao Okada,Michiko Mayuzumi,Tamiko Miyatsu,Philip Hinder,Kyoko
Shida,Masako Sugita,Iwao Yamashita; Published by Cengage; Tokyo, (2014). ISBN 978-4-86312-256-7
• Goals for the Course:
• Learners will identify and use appropriate language to communicate effectively in everyday clinical
situations. (Speaking)
• Learners will become more consistently aware of spoken English in their clinical environment, and in
increasingly more complex levels. (Listening)
• Learners will be able to read materials encountered in clinical life to meet professional needs and
interests. (Reading)
• Learners will be able to use the writing skills needed in clinical environment to meet personal and
interpersonal needs. (Writing)
• Learners will be able to use numeric terminology in clinical situations, including the classroom. They
will be able to use numeric terminology in producing and understanding oral communications, as well as
in reading and writing. (Numbers)
• Review & Reflective Writing Assignments:
For every 2 units (i.e. units 1 & 2, etc.) you will be asked to reflect and write about particular experiences
related to your English learning and your professional growth. The questions below will help you do this:
1. What new words, conversational expressions, and grammar patterns did you learn?
2. Write sentences using these new word, conversational expressions, and grammar patterns.
3. What else did you learn? (... about language or culture?)
4. What was difficult for you to do and why was it difficult?
5. What can you do to improve in these areas of English, or to do the tasks better.
