to manage and operate a small business. In2009, he was hired asa skilledlaborerwiththe renownedMesser
Construction,where he learnedhowtoworkalongside experiencedjourneyman, gainingthe knowledge tooperate jobs
on a commercial andindustrial scale. Throughouthistime atYouthBuildLouisville andMesserConstruction,James
participatedinvarious educational andtrainingcoursesofferedbyhisemployers andthe community,soakingupas
much knowledgeaspossibletofurtherhiscareer. Inlate 2009, he was hiredbySustainable Diagnosticsasabuilding
analystwhere he earnedhiscertification forgreenbuildingthroughthe BuildingPerformance Institute. AtSustainable
Diagnostics, Jamesdevelopedcosteffective solutionstoenvironmental andseasonal changes,savingpropertyowners
moneyina changingeconomy.
Harnessingthe supportandresourcesthatYouthBuildandhisnew professional communityprovided,James wrote his
businessplanandfurtherreviseditwiththe helpof DonKeller,Presidentof SCOREinLouisville,Kentucky. Jamesthen
submittedhisbusinessplantoYouthBuildU.S.A.fortheirGreenInitiative Program. The Green InitiativeProgramaims
to supportYouthBuildgraduateswhohave adesire tofurthertheircareersina greenindustry. James’splanwasone of
onlya fewselectedoutof over250 applicants;whichawardedhimwithseedfundingof $10,000.
HootenHome Serviceshasservedthe greaterLouisville communitysince itsestablishmentin 2010, providingits
customerswithhome repairandremodelingservices,eco-friendlyproducts andoutstandingcustomerservice.
