What was it?

• Charles Sumner, Senator or Massachusetts,
  denounced the crime against Kansas in a
  public speech, a man named Preston
  Brooks, beat him senselessly with a cane on
  the Congress floor.
Results

• Sumner nearly died after the incident, he
  was hospitalized and it took him 3 years to
  recover from his wounds. The rest of his life
  he had terrible headaches constantly.
Results

• Preston Brooks resigned from the house
  after what had happened, but immediately
  returned to office in the South, and most
  down there saw him as a hero.
