Purpose
The Radford University Fraternity and Sorority Standards of Excellence (SOE) Assessment process is designed
to provide an objective appraisal of a chapter’s performance and to honor outstanding chapter achievement.
It will help to assist chapters in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in programming and chapter
management. It is not designed as a competition, but rather a challenge for each chapter to improve both
programming and overall operations. Participation in SOE’s gives each chapter an opportunity to have its
programs evaluated by Radford University’s Faculty/Staff and be provided written and verbal feedback to help
each chapter shine in excellence. This application will assist chapters in preparing for the assessment and
awards process that all see at a state, regional, and national/international level.
This is a two part process composed of a Binder and Formal Presentation. It is each chapter’s requirement
and responsibility to document their answers for each of the categories being judged.
BINDER
Self-Assessment
Chapters will be asked to complete a self-assessment. This self-assessment provides each chapter the
opportunity to be engaged in the assessment and awards process. As a chapter you will be required to reflect
on the past year, identify areas of strength and the need for improvement, and develop strategies to continue
to enhance each organization’s achievements and contributions to the community. There are 640 points
possible in the Binder portion including the Self-Assessment which has 6 areas of standards: Scholarship,
Leadership, Community Involvement & Fraternalism, Chapter Operations, Community Service, and
Philanthropy.
Documentation
Chapters are encouraged to us the binders in the Greek Life Office Library for compiling and displaying the
relevant documentation for each section of the self-assessment process. Remember it is your responsibility to
PROVE IT, through your documentation. Don’t assume the judges know anything about your organization or
what you’ve accomplished over the past year. Be specific and detailed in your documentation. FOLLOW THE
INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY, points will NOT be awarded otherwise.
FORMAL PRESENTATION
Each chapter must also create a presentation on their chapter that includes evidence of excellence in each of
the six areas of standards. The presentation can be anything the chapter desires, visual aids are strongly
encouraged but are not required. Be creative. The interview/presentation will be 20 minutes in length,
including the showing of a 5-15 minute presentation. Use your personality and show us what your
organization is all about in a creative way. During the remaining five minutes, the judges will ask the chapter
members questions about their activities and successes during the academic year.
How to Prepare for Presentation
Chapters should use the included Fraternity/Sorority Assessment & Awards Study Guide as a framework for
their conversation with judges. It is suggested that you have a slide for each section highlighting the parts
your chapter is most proud of and desires to work on in the future. Presentation tips for the interview are
listed below.

PRESENTATION TIPS
Who should be Your Chapter’s Representative at the Presentation?
Officers or chairs that have the most knowledge regarding the chapter’s involvement in the specific
awards area are encouraged to attend the application interview. We suggest that you have at least one
new member that is a sophomore, one junior and one graduating senior attend the
Interview/Presentation.
What to Bring to the Presentation?
Since this is an interview, each present member of your organization should be dressed professionally.
You will need to bring your chapter’s self-assessment study guide to use as a framework for
conversation with the judges. You will also need for your presentation to be saved onto a portable
jump drive if you are using PowerPoint or playing a video.
What to Expect During the Presentation?
The judges will provide you with feedback during your interview. This immediate feedback should give
you clarity about the areas in which your organization is doing well and those that may need
improvement. They will also be sending the Greek Life Office a completed form with written feedback
that will be provided to you upon completion of the Assessment and Awards Program. This feedback
should be used as your chapter evaluates progress and sets goals for the next year.

  • 4. Radford University Greek Life: STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE 3 Α Β Γ ∆ Ε Ζ Η Θ Ι Κ Λ Μ Ν Ξ Ο Π Ρ Σ Τ Υ Φ Χ Ψ Ω RADFORD UNIVERSITY GREEK LIFE OFFICE DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES Purpose The Radford University Fraternity and Sorority Standards of Excellence (SOE) Assessment process is designed to provide an objective appraisal of a chapter’s performance and to honor outstanding chapter achievement. It will help to assist chapters in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in programming and chapter management. It is not designed as a competition, but rather a challenge for each chapter to improve both programming and overall operations. Participation in SOE’s gives each chapter an opportunity to have its programs evaluated by Radford University’s Faculty/Staff and be provided written and verbal feedback to help each chapter shine in excellence. This application will assist chapters in preparing for the assessment and awards process that all see at a state, regional, and national/international level. This is a two part process composed of a Binder and Formal Presentation. It is each chapter’s requirement and responsibility to document their answers for each of the categories being judged. BINDER Self-Assessment Chapters will be asked to complete a self-assessment. This self-assessment provides each chapter the opportunity to be engaged in the assessment and awards process. As a chapter you will be required to reflect on the past year, identify areas of strength and the need for improvement, and develop strategies to continue to enhance each organization’s achievements and contributions to the community. There are 640 points possible in the Binder portion including the Self-Assessment which has 6 areas of standards: Scholarship, Leadership, Community Involvement & Fraternalism, Chapter Operations, Community Service, and Philanthropy. Documentation Chapters are encouraged to us the binders in the Greek Life Office Library for compiling and displaying the relevant documentation for each section of the self-assessment process. Remember it is your responsibility to PROVE IT, through your documentation. Don’t assume the judges know anything about your organization or what you’ve accomplished over the past year. Be specific and detailed in your documentation. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS COMPLETELY, points will NOT be awarded otherwise. FORMAL PRESENTATION Each chapter must also create a presentation on their chapter that includes evidence of excellence in each of the six areas of standards. The presentation can be anything the chapter desires, visual aids are strongly encouraged but are not required. Be creative. The interview/presentation will be 20 minutes in length, including the showing of a 5-15 minute presentation. Use your personality and show us what your organization is all about in a creative way. During the remaining five minutes, the judges will ask the chapter members questions about their activities and successes during the academic year. How to Prepare for Presentation Chapters should use the included Fraternity/Sorority Assessment & Awards Study Guide as a framework for their conversation with judges. It is suggested that you have a slide for each section highlighting the parts your chapter is most proud of and desires to work on in the future. Presentation tips for the interview are listed below.
  • 5. Radford University Greek Life: STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE 4 Α Β Γ ∆ Ε Ζ Η Θ Ι Κ Λ Μ Ν Ξ Ο Π Ρ Σ Τ Υ Φ Χ Ψ Ω RADFORD UNIVERSITY GREEK LIFE OFFICE DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES PRESENTATION TIPS Who should be Your Chapter’s Representative at the Presentation? Officers or chairs that have the most knowledge regarding the chapter’s involvement in the specific awards area are encouraged to attend the application interview. We suggest that you have at least one new member that is a sophomore, one junior and one graduating senior attend the Interview/Presentation. What to Bring to the Presentation? Since this is an interview, each present member of your organization should be dressed professionally. You will need to bring your chapter’s self-assessment study guide to use as a framework for conversation with the judges. You will also need for your presentation to be saved onto a portable jump drive if you are using PowerPoint or playing a video. What to Expect During the Presentation? The judges will provide you with feedback during your interview. This immediate feedback should give you clarity about the areas in which your organization is doing well and those that may need improvement. They will also be sending the Greek Life Office a completed form with written feedback that will be provided to you upon completion of the Assessment and Awards Program. This feedback should be used as your chapter evaluates progress and sets goals for the next year. Questions, comments, and concerns can be directed to the Greek Life Office staff with in the Department of Student Activities Robert Marias Asst.
