2. What is it?
• An event held in Spain each year to move bulls used in
bullfights
• The bulls are ran through the streets through towns to
the arena
• The people of the towns run with the bulls for reasons
of personal fear and excitement
3. Origin
• Originated in the 1400’s
• The town needed to move bulls
across town to the market to be
butchered
• People ran with them to hurry
the bulls along
• Eventually turned into a
competition to race the bulls
and move out of the way safely
4. Organization of the Event
• Held in Pamplona, Spain
• Starts at 8 a.m.
• Runners sing benediction
• 6 bulls released from corral
• Ends when last bull has entered
ring
• Wooden fence put up to help
direct bulls
• Rockets fired to signal end of
run
5. Deaths and Injuries
• Each year between 50 and 100 are injured from
the running
• An average of 6 are gored by horns each year
• 15 deaths since 1910
6. Dress Code
• No formal dress code
• By tradition, the most popular dress attire is white
pants, white shirt and red handkerchief around the
neck
7. Backlash
• Many protest the running of the bulls saying it is
cruel to the animals involved
• PETA marches each year naked in protest of the
event and calls it “running of the nudes”
