Objectives of the laboratory work
Cement/superplasticer compatibility
Introduce the new Holcim cone TM application based test
method to assess
- The water demand for a given cement according to its intrinsic
characteristics
- the cement/admixture compatibility
Self-compacting concrete
Produce self-compacting concrete according to the powder
and to the admixture (viscosity enhancer admixture)
approaches
Present different test methods to assess the self-
compactability properties (self-flowing, resistance to
blocking and deformability)

Holcim Group Support CCA 2008
Holcim cone tool concept
A two-step test
Step 1 – intrinsic characteristic of the cement in terms of
water demand and strength are determined
Results depend only on the physical and chemical
characteristics of the cement
Done without water reducers or superplasicizers
Can be used in normal cement production
Step 2 – from cement quality to concrete performance
requirements
Determination of water reduction to meet requirements for
workability and design strength
Assessment of best economical & available admixtures
that meet concrete performance
