2. DEFINITION AND PURPOSE OF
SUGGESTION
Definition of suggestion
• Suggestion is an idea or plan put forward for consideration.
Purpose of suggestion
• To ask and give suggestion to someone and give responses
to the suggestion whether accepting or refusing it.
• To help someone who needs any suggestion or advice by
giving our personal idea and opinion in our daily life.
4. ASKING FOR SUGGESTION
Asking for suggestion is the way someone asking
suggestione in English when we have a problem. Then, use the
following formula :
We can express with…
• What do you advise me to do?
• What should I do?
• What ought I to do?
• Do you have any suggestion for me?

5. GIVING SUGGESTION
• In giving suggestion, there are two
conditions / situations that we have to
distinguish is, a situation which was mediocre
and dangerous situation / emergency.
• To give suggestion in a regular situation,
then use the following formula :
• Should and ought to means " must “
S + Should + Verb1 ( S + ought to +
Verb1)
6. GIVING SUGGESTION
• The situation 's bad / dangerous situation in which if
severe , then use the following formula :
Description :
• S is the subject, the subject can be a noun, pronoun, and
noun phrase
Example:
• You had better take a medicine.
S + Had better +Verb1
7. GIVING SUGGESTION
We can express of giving suggestion with…
• I suggest/ recommend that you + V1 (Saya menyarankan/merekomendasikan bahwa
kamu.....).
• You’d better + V1 ( Kamu harus......)
• I’d like to suggest that + V1 ( Saya mau memberi saran bahwa......)
• How about + V1 –ing ( Bagaimana tentang ......)
• What about + V1 –ing (Bagaimana dengan .....)
• Why don’t you + V1 (Mengapa kamu tidak ......)
• You should/ought to + V1 ( Kamu harus......)
• Let’s + V1 (Ayo/mari kita ......)
8. ACCEPTING SUGGESTION
• The definition of accept suggestion means to willingly take,
receive or agree to an object or idea.
• In the expression of accepting the suggestion usually have the
word " agree“
• We can express to accepting suggestion with..
• Yes, I’d like/ love to.
• That sounds like a good
idea.
• I’ll do/try that.
• Why didn’t I think of that?
• Ok. Yes, let's.
• What a good idea!
• Why not?
• Yes, with pleasure.
9. REFUSING SUGGESTION
• Refusing is to say or show that you are not willing to do
something that someone wants you to do
• I tried that, but…
• Thanks, but that won’t work/ help because …
• That’s a good idea, but …
• No, I’d rather not.
• I don’t feel like it.
• It’s a bad idea.
10. DIALOG EXAMPLES:

Callista : I have a serious problem today. I have just lost my
dictionary.
Leony : Don’t be so sad my friend, let us search it around the
class.
Callista : I have looked for it for hours but I do not find it, do
you have some ideas?
Leony : You had better tell the guidance teacher to announce
it to other students.
Callista : Yeah, that sounds good. I do hope it helps.
11. DIALOG EXAMPLES:

Tiara : Jessy.., Do you have any idea about which one should I
buy for him ?
Jessy : Mmmm.., I suggest you to buy something like a football
team’s fan merchandise .. Because usually a boy loved football,
right ?
Tiara : That’s a good idea.. Let’s search for it..!
Which one is better..? Red or Blue ?
Jessy : I think red should be better.., but it’s up to you.
Tiara : I’ll take the red one, then. Thank you .
