Team
»Who have you worked with over last 3 months?
» Artefactual Systems
» UK Archivematica group (incl. Universities of Edinburgh,
Lancaster, Leeds, Nottingham, Strathclyde, Warwick and
Arkivum)
» International Archivematica users (Zuse Institute Berlin,
Bentley Historical Library, University of Alberta)
» The National Archives
» Other Research Data Spring projects
» Internal stakeholder groups

Valuation
»What makes your project amazing (gap filled) &
useful (benefits) for the sector?
»Digital preservation makes the long-term value and
re-use of research data a reality. It is a very
obvious gap in existing RDM infrastructure and this
project directly addresses this
»Project outputs contribute to the development of
DP solutions for research data

Valuation
»why will people love Archivematica?
» It is free
» It is configurable
» It allows a high level of automation of digital preservation
tasks
» It is standards compliant
» There is a user community in the UK and beyond
…. it works for research data and we can make it better
02/07/2015 Title of presentation (Go to ‘View’ menu > ‘Header and Footer…’ to edit the footers on this slide) 5
Valuation
»What are your plans for sustainability?
»All developments funded in phase 2 will be
incorporated into the main code base and
supported for the long term by Artefactual Systems
»Digital preservation is all about sustainability…
02/07/2015 Title of presentation (Go to ‘View’ menu > ‘Header and Footer…’ to edit the footers on this slide) 6
Progress
»What have you achieved in the first phase?
»Produced a detailed and extensive two-part report
providing information on Archivematica and how it
sits within the research data space
»Established a clear way forward for enhancing
Archivematica to provide a better solution for RDM
02/07/2015 Title of presentation (Go to ‘View’ menu > ‘Header and Footer…’ to edit the footers on this slide) 7
Next phase
» Enhance and develop Archivematica for RDM:
» Better workflows for RDM
» Allowing the DIP (access copy of data) to be usable by
different repository systems
» Helping reduce bottlenecks for big data
» Workflows for unidentified files
» Enabling easier querying of data within Archivematica by
third party applications
» Better documentation
» Also laying the foundations for our PoCs in phase 3
02/07/2015 Title of presentation (Go to ‘View’ menu > ‘Header and Footer…’ to edit the footers on this slide) 8
Next phase
»Deliverables for phase 2
– Enhancements to Archivematica
– Implementation plans for local workflows (for phase 3)
–to include consideration of above campus option
– Presentations to UK Archivematica group and Northern
Collaboration conference
– Paper submitted to IDCC 2016
– Review paper on RDS projects and digital preservation
