3. Tarnowskie Góry
Is a city in southern Poland, in the Silesian Province, at
the northern end of the Upper Silesian Industrial District
(GOP). The name of the city comes from the name of the
village of Tarnowice (now a district - Stare Tarnowice)
and the word mountain, which in Old Polish meant
mines.

4. How were the "Tarnowskie Góry"
created?
Tarnowskie Góry owes its existence to the riches of the land: lead,
silver, zinc and iron ores.According to legend, the first lump of silver-
bearing ore was plowed by the peasant Rybka around 1490. From that
time, settlers began to arrive in the area of today's city and the first
mining settlements were established. The then owner of these lands,
Jan II, the Duke of Opole and Racibórz and margrave Jerzy
Hohenzollern, in 1526 granted, inter alia, a privilege supporting
mining in the emerging city, ie an "act of mining freedom". In the
same year, probably the "miners' stronghold" received city rights.

5. In the middle of the 16th century, Tarnowskie
Góry was the largest center of ore mining in
Upper Silesia. The Reformation found many
supporters here. It was consolidated after the
death of John II the Good (1532), when the
city came under the rule of the
Hohenzollerns. In 1529, Protestants built the
first wooden church, and two years later - a
brick one in its place. In the eighties of the
eighteenth century, on the initiative of
Frederick Wilhelm von Reden, the
government mine and steelworks "Fryderyk"
was established - named after the royal
name, in which in 1788 one of the first on the
European continent, brought from England,
steam engine for draining workings was
launched mining. The development of the
town was sealed by the establishment of the
Tarnowskie Góry Starosty in 1873. Over the
years, however, the ore resources are
depleted and at the beginning of In the
twentieth century, the mining of the ore
ends. WSB

18. The legend of Tarnowskie Góry
Stories passed down from generation to generation say that
a basilisk once lived in Tarnowskie Góry. The legend goes
like this: long ago in Tarnowskie Góry there was a prince
who had a beautiful daughter, Victoria. One day this very
princess was walking in the forest, where she met an old
man who told her a story about a basilisk living in the Royal
Mines. The princess could not resist this temptation and
had to verify that the basilisk really existed. She went down
to the mine, wandered the corridors, until at some point a
huge snake appeared on her way. It was just a basilisk.
WSB
19. The princess got scared and lost her crown while escaping. Basilisk
took this treasure and proudly decorated his head with it. The prince
gathered knights and daredevils to regain the crown, but none of them
succeeded. One day, however, a brave young man appeared who
decided to go down to the mine. He used a trick - he decided to
spread out various delicacies in the corridor. Thus, he outsmarted the
basilisk and tore the crown off his head. The young man with the
treasure got to the surface. He married a princess as a reward, but the
basilisk never showed up again after that.
