2. WHAT IS RESEARCH?
• According to Creswell: “Research is a procedure of steps used to gather and analyse
information to increase our understanding of a particular topic or issue.”
• The term research includes two words specifically ‘re’ and ‘search’. By and large, ‘re’
signifies again and ‘search’ signifies to discover.
• Basically research is a process which:-
Investigates some existing situation or problem.
Build or make another method or framework
Generate new knowledge.
Offer a solution to a problem.
Review and synthesize the existing knowledge.
3. TYPES OF RESEARCH
TYPES OF RESEARCH FROM
THE VIEW POINT OF
APPLICATION
• Pure research
• Applied research
OBJECTIVES
• Exploratory research
• Descriptive research
• Correlational research
• Explanatory research
MODE OF ENQUIRY
• Quantitative research
• Qualitative research
4. • ON THE BASIS OFAPPLICATION
• Pure Research: This is also called fundamental or basic research. This is
always used to acquire knowledge, form a theory or a principle but, no
practical application is done.
• Applied Research: This research is opposite of basic research and this
research is basically applied or practical in nature. Applied research is done
by experts and always support generalisations.
Action Research: This is a type of applied research. This research is not
done by experts and done for a local problem, basically for improvement
or amelioration. Supports no generalisation, and for local application.
5. • ON THE BASIS OF OBJECTIVES
• Exploratory Research: As the name suggests it is done to explore something
new or for a new situation. It is basically implemented when we have a very
less or no knowledge. This defines the problem.
• Descriptive Research: This is a type of research which only describes the
data as it is. Descriptive research method will never tell you ‘why’. This is
quantitative in nature.
Example: It will give the answer of ‘what is depression’? But will never tell,
how and why it happens.
6. • Correlational Research: This research basically tells if the relation
between two or more variables, ‘exists or not’. And if any relation
exists then it will tell of which ‘degree’. Correlational tells the
direction of research.
• Explanatory Research: This sometimes seems like descriptive
research but it is not. As the name suggests explanatory research
always explains “why”.
• Example: Why the heart attack is associated with stress.
7. • ON THE BASIS OF MODE OF ENQUIRY
• Quantitative Research: This is a type of research which deals with
numbers.
• This is also called as Fixed/Structured/Scientific Research.
• It is always structured or planned as it is used to prove something.
• This is a deductive approach as it promotes generalisation.
• Sample is large.
• Superficial data is collected.
• This method an objective method and researcher remains detached from the
study.
8. • Qualitative Research: This indicates the word ‘discovery’.
• This is also called as Flexible / Spiral/ Unstructured Research.
• Data is in any form except numbers.
• Sample size is small.
• This is always subjective.
• This is based on contextual generalisation.
9. CONCLUSION
• These were the basic types of research which we have discussed above.
Other than this, research holds various types :
Ethnography research
Historical research
Exegetic research
Case study research
Phenomenology etc.
