Bullying has been a problem for years and years. But when is someone gonna help stop it? We are here to explain to you why bullying is so bad, and
why it needs to stop. We are also gonna give you a few reasons how to fix it.
Bullying is a problem, it affects kids at home, in school, and even in communities. Bullying can be physical, like hitting and touching other kids. It can
also be verbal, calling people names, threatening, and harassing. Another is Social bullying, that involves using a relationship to hurt someone like,

someone. All of these are terrible. There are over...show more content...
Don't be a bystander. If you see that someone is being hurt physically, verbally, even socially tell someone. Tell an adult, your teacher, and even some
people you trust. If we tell many people, at least one of them will do something about it.
Train people. We should train teachers, adults, anyone what bullying looks like. We need to show people what bullying looks like so they can stop it.
Then once they stop it, they can do something. They can have a punishment for how bad the bullying was.
Severe punishment. If people punish the bullies they will stop. Maybe it will I guess "Threaten" them, and then they won't do it. It can be something
along the lines of taking electronics away. It could have something to do with school.. You could have them eat lunch alone. They could sit away from
people in the class. Then this could teach them to stop. If kids don't get a punishment for bullying and nothing is stopping them, they are going to
continue the same behavior someone has to reinforce them and let them know what they are doing is wrong and

Bullying And Bullying : Bullying
Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior that causes someone to feel afraid or intimidated. This behavior could be something physical,
verbal, or something done electronically or through social media. If someone feels threatened by someone's actions or words, it could be considered
bullying, even if that was not the intent. There are many types of bullying, how to recognize bullying, how to report bullying, what to do if you see
incidents of bullying, and what resources are available to persons who have been bullied.
Some people believe that bullying is only seen on television or in the movies but it is a real life issue that is seen and experienced by many every
day. People of all ages, races, cultures and backgrounds are affected. There are some who are embarrassed to report bullying but it occurs every day,
everywhere. It is important to learn about and understand what causes people to be bullies, as well as understand the effects that being bullied can
have on a person. It is important for people to understand all sides of bullying, from the signs of someone being bullied to what you can do to prevent it.
Physical bullying occurs mostly at school.According to bullying.gov Middle school is the age when bullying is most common. Almost all middle
school students are being affected directly or indirectly by bullying. Students who bully others often have trouble with self–control, following the rules
and caring for each other. In the future they may have

Bullying mentally and physically affects people's well being. This abuse occurs not only in schools around us, but also worldwide. Bullying is a
problem, and people need to figure out ways to solve it. There are a lot of different types of bullying: such as, cyber, verbal, social, and physical. Every
year nearly 48% of students are bullied. Bullying itself cannot be resolved, but there are ways to help prevent it from happening.
High School bullying is very common, and causes a lot of conflicts with fellow students and also teachers. In today's society individuals think it is ok
to just take their feelings out on others through a series of different ways. Bullying is an individual's way of feeling better about themself. This has

I first hand have witnessed someone that was bullied to her breaking point. Her and I were friends, she always seemed happy and never seemed to
be worried about what people thought about her. She had one bad day in particular that she had told me everything about her bullies and I informed
her that I would be there for her more. A week later she was gone. It is real, bullying has real effects on people that takes them to the point of wanting
to end their lives. In today's society bullying is just another thing, but it is a major problem and should not be forgotten about.
How help someone being bullied? If it is witnessed, tell an adult, stand up to the bully. Individuals being bullied should have someone to talk to, and
the people bullying them should be disciplined. There should be harsher punishments for those who victimize others. Although, I believe there should
be help involved for them too. Not only are they bullying, but there more or less is a reason they are doing it. The bullies as well should have
someone to talk to, someone to reassure them that everything will be okay for them too. 90% of the time an individual that physically or mentally
abuses someone is either down on themselves, has a hard time at home, or is jealous of the individual they harass. People need to stick up for the
adolescents in these situations, offer them some kind of support.
Bullying is a very common thing in high schools, and affects teenage individuals both

Bullying is behaviour that hurts someone else – such as hitting, name–calling, pushing, threatening or undermining someone or spreading rumours.
The Anti–Bullying Alliance definition of bullying is:
"the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power".
Bullying is frequently defined as deliberately hurtful or aggressive behaviour, usually repeated over a period of time and difficult for victims to defend
themselves against in which the goal is intimidation or dominance over another person. Bullying includes intimidation, harassment and discrimination

Verbal bullying includes name calling, teasing, taunting insults, mocking, sarcasm, intimidation, homophobic or racist remarks, orverbal abuse. While
verbal abuse can start off harmless, it can escalate to levels which start affecting the individual target.
Example: When a child says to another child, "You're really, really fat, and so is your Mum."
Potential effects on children and young people:
Show aggressive tendencies, say hurtful things (just like their bullies)
Turn their anger inward becoming self–destructive (possibly engage in substance abuse)
Delayed development
Become depressed or anxious
Low self–esteem
Lacks confidence
Becomes withdrawn and isolated, moody
Change in appetite (comfort eating or not eating at all)
Emotional, Social or Relational
Emotional, social or relational bullying, sometimes referred to as covert bullying, is often harder to recognise and can be carried out behind a person's
back. It is designed to harm someone's social reputation and/or cause humiliation, deliberately preventing someone from joining in or being part of the
group. Social bullying includes:

Why Bullying Is Bad
Why Do It
Alexis Helmin Bullying is a dangerous problem that exists in society today. Many teens have experienced it. Unfortunately there are lots of different
ways to bully a victim. Cyber bullying, is a popular way to attack a victim online. Physical bullying, is another form that is commonly used. Whatever
the type, the outcome can be devastating.
People are cyber bullied all the time. It's how the people who see, do, and experience it that matters. More specifically the people who see bullying
happening are the bystanders and upstanders. Upstanders are the people who see bullying and do something about it. Bystanders are the ones who
see bullying and don't do anything about it, they often silent or join in. With such a big audience it could be harder to stand up to the bully then.
Thats one reason the bully does it online. They can also stay anonymous and can form a clique of people and bystanders. It is easier to...show more

It can be dangerous for the bully, victim, and the people around them. Although physical bullying is more commonly thought of as beating someone
up. It can be just as harmful using words. "Words can hurt too" is a quote from an expert. It is used to remind people that what they say can hurt
someone just as much as a slap across the face. Naturally when someone starts a fight, they get consequences such as detention, suspension, and they
can get expelled. If parents or teachers don't do something about it immediately, it could get worse the bully might think that they have more power
on their victim. Physical bullying can be biased on different things, someone might bully because of weight, gender, religion or beliefs, and wealth.
Over 3.2 million students are victims of physical bullying each year. About 160,000 teens stay home from school if fear of bullies. That is a true fact.

Essay about Bullying and Harassment
Managing bullying and harassment in the workplace
When most of us hear the term 'bullying' we seem to reflect back on childhood memories of the schoolyard bully tormenting others for
self–amusement, much to the distain of others around them. Unfortunately this seems not to be the only time such behaviour occurs. Workplacebullying
and harassment can be defined as 'Offending, socially excluding someone or negatively affecting someone's work tasks. It can occur repeatedly and
regularly over a period of time where the confronted ends up in an inferior position and becomes the target of systematic negative social acts'
(Einarsen et al, 2007). This essay will explain the significance of bullying and harassment in the workplace by exploring,...show more content...
Workplace bullies have been described as 'conquerors only interested in power and control, who enjoy belittling sub–ordinates' (Dawn et al, 2007).
Statistics from an Australian cross– national survey revealed that 70 percent of bullying behaviour was inflicted by a supervisor or manager toward
sub–ordinates (Query & Hanley, 2010). Some of the affects bullying and harassment has on workers is low self esteem, anxiety depression,
psychosomatic problems (hostility, hyper sensibility, loss of memory and feelings of victimisation), aggression, fear and mistrust, cognitive effects
(inability to concentrate or think clearly, reduced problem solving capacity), isolation, loneliness, deterioration of friendships, chronic fatigue and sleep
problems (Poilpot–Rocaboy,2006). From an organisational perspective, it is estimated that organisations in Australia lose between $6 billion and $13
billion per annum due to bullying related abuse (Query & Hanley, 2010) and that more than 2 million managers and professionals voluntarily leave
their jobs every year due solely to workplace unfairness, including bullying (Query & Hanley, 2010). These figures do not include the millions of

Many people do not realize how serious bullying has become. If you look at statistics suicides due to bullying have increased over just a few short
years. This has become a very big problem for not only the victim but the bully as well as it affect both of them. School bullying is mentally
destructive to not only the victims, but bullies because of the harmful words, harassment, and physical violence involved as well as the consequences
for the bully.
The general definition of bullying is, "... [This] states that a person is being bullied when he or she is exposed repeatedly and over time, to negative

The most common type of bullying among females is verbal bullying ("Verbal Bullying" 1). This type of psychological bullying uses derogatory
terms to demean, or lower, the victim in the eyes of others to show that the bully has power over them ("Verbal Bullying" 1). This causes the person to
have low self–esteem and develop depression in that victim ("Verbal Bullying" 1). Verbal bullying is the most psychologically damaging and lasts
well into adulthood (Aluede et al. 6). "[Words] have a power all their own, and the realities of verbal bullying can have very physical consequences,
even if the aggressor never lays a finger on the victim" ("Verbal Bullying" 1) In more severe cases of verbal bullying, or any bullying for that matter,
can lead to drugs because the victim wants to escape his or her tortured life, in more extreme cases if the person's depression worsens it could lead to
suicide ("Verbal Bullying" 1).
The well–organized ripping away of respect and affection is called, emotional [bullying] (Deal.org 1). Emotional bullying can be as simple as ignoring
the person's feelings, not listening, forcing the victim to do something they would not normally do, and by laying a guilt trip on the victims backs to
manipulate that person to do what the bully want (Deal.org 1). "Emotional [bullying] leaves the victim with hidden scars that often result in insecurity,

For many teenagers, social media plays a big role in their lives. Social media like Twitter,
Facebook, Instagram, Path and many more can be useful tools to keep in touch with friends
which live far away. Social media is one of the most used types of websites by teenagers. This
means it is commonly used for both good and bad purposes. Although social media can be used

causes for Cyberbullying to occur.
The impacts of cyber bullying for the victims can be underestimated because they are
mainly psychological and not physical. Cyber bullying in its extremes has led to the death of
several teenagers. Cyber bullying leads to depression and lack of enthusiasm for life that drives
the victim to suicide in order to escape the torment. Actually, the first step of preventing and
stopping cyber bullying starts with the individual themselves. They should respect the others and
also themselves because everyone has their human rights and no one cannot destroy it. Simple
steps like using the internet appropriately and not provoking other users are very effective in
preventing cyber bullying. Using internet as the media social is fine but trying to harm people by
spreading gossip or starting rumors and stealing someone password or hacking are bad things.
Technology is decreasing the ability for others to interact and communicate, which is
highly essential in today's world. While social media is a useful tool in our increasingly
connected world, they can also adversely affect our development and the nature of our

Why Bullying Is Bad
Bullying
Why do people always like to bring people down? If you don't know someone why is it ok for people to make fun of them. Just because you don't
know them and they are different than you it isn't right to bully them. Bullying is a problem because people that are being bullied can hurt themselves,
can mentally and physically be affected, and no one is immuned from bullies. Nowadays, bullying can affect you in many bad ways. It can lead to
physical and mental issues. According to stopbullying.gov, "kids who are bullied can experience negative physical, school, and mental health issues. In

The results of kids being bullied can end up in death. Studies show that people who are abused by their peers are at risk for mental health problems,
such as low self esteem, stress, depression, or anxiety. They may also think about suicide or more. It is estimated that 1 out of 4 elementary–school
bullies will have a criminal record by the time they are 30 (Dealing with Bullying). Many kids feel socially left out and this makes them want to harm
themselves. So now the question is, "Is bullying really bullying?". Mr. Scott tells us we often confuse bullying with student conflict (Scott).
Sometimes maturity level is different and they don't know the difference between being bullied and having a conflict. Not every bad behavior is
called bullying. Steven Michael says that the word bully is the most overused word in education. People throw it around way too easily and can make
accusations about being bullied without proof. These accusations come with a predetermined sentence of guilt. People seem to jump to conclusions
when it comes to bullying. So you may need to put yourself into the shoes of the person who is getting

Have you ever seen or experienced bullying and the dramatic effects it has on its victims? Unfortunately nine out of every ten students have

intentionally causing mental and or physical damage to their victims, which will affect them for the rest of their lives. Bullying has shown that it can

They should be treated like an individual who knows right and wrong and continues to do wrong by physically assault another student. In most
cases of self inflicted injuries are caused by cyber bullying, which is online or over the phone. It is horrible and it takes a lot to make someone feel
like their life is not worth living or that bringing a blade to their wrists will relieve the pain they are going through mentally. Cyber bullies attack
people psychologically and get very personal with the intent of hurting someone. They hide behind the computer and use it to ruin others lives. That
is worse than physical bullying, because the psychological scars are things that will be with the victims forever. It will affect their self esteem, their
value of life, their insecurities, and how they act socially. Bullying does not go away after you leave school, bullying in some cases stays with people
for the rest of their lives. The events that the victims went through torments them for the rest of their lives through flash backs, fears created by the
bully, and even seeing the bully themselves. Most victims have nightmares and flashbacks that bring them back to that horrible time of their life and
haunt them long after school is over. The last thing I ask is to look at this from a personal perspective. People should think as if it were their child who
came home crying, beaten, battered, cut marks on

The Effects of Bullying on a Child Essay
The Effects of Bullying on a Child
Every day in our schools, children are threatened, teased, taunted, and tormented by bullies. At any given time, about 25 percent of U.S. students are
the victims of bullies and about 20 percent are engaged in bullying behavior (Education World, 2000). The National Association of School
Psychologists estimates that 160,000 children stay home from school every day because they are afraid of being bullied (Education World, 2000).

It is important to note there are often severe affects of bullying. In Why Kids Kill: Exploring the Causes and Possible Solutions, Sylvia Rimm, a
clinical professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, identifies a common trait among the violent
children she's worked with: "There was always a history of problems in peer relationships," Rimm said. "All of them [children who expressed anger
violently] had been teased by others more than what is typical." All the violent children, in other words, had been the victims of bullies (Rimm, 2000).
Victims of bullying often suffer lifelong problems with low self–esteem. They are prone to depression, suicide, and other mental health problems
throughout their lives (Education World, 2000).

Bullying is known as aggressive behavior towards someone, there are three types of bullying, verbal, social, and physical bullying (Capeless).
Cyberbullying is another type of bullying, which is when people bully others on social media ("Prevent Bullying"). "Bullying is the most common
form of violence" (Capeless). Bullies can be found anywhere, such as school, online, or any type of social environment ("Stand Up To Bullying").
If individuals start to see signs of bullying it should be prevented before it begins and becomes worse than it should be. Whenever people see
someone being bullied there is always a way to prevent it, such as reporting it or talking to someone about it ("Prevent Bullying"). Verbal abuse is
usually constant, but physical abuse can be even worse by middle school and then weaken or go away by high school. "72% of teens report "at
least one incident"of bullying online (name calling, insults via IM or social networking sites)" (Capeless). If there is a parent and their child is being
bullied, they need to try and help in any way they can. It may be hard at times, but people can somehow prevent it from happening by just being there
for them or talking to them about it (Dorothy 233). People can also come together with their community and try to stop bullying from happening by
communicating with others and coming up with a plan ("Prevent Bullying"). How would you feel if you or someone close to you was being

It is everywhere and has become part of the everyday environment. More often then not, bullying occurs greatly within local school systems, where it

Also, T.V. shows are quite readily available for anyone to watch. Kids may try "moves" on people at school because they believe it's cool. As well,
cooperation from childrens' parents is important, some parents actually encourage their children to fight to look cool or don't teach them properly.
Kids must take their own initiative, as well, they must find out what's wrong and what's right for themselves sometimes. Many kids don't take
bullying seriously. However, when a real incident occurs, they are unprepared, shocked, regretful, or dead. Bullying must stop, for it is destroying
the lives and futures of many innocents, perhaps not killing them, but ruining them. People may end up physically distorted, paralysed, or dead
because of bullying. Aside from physical harm, there is also mental harm. This is equally as destructive. Kids may become extremely depressed
from being bullied. As a result, they may refuse to eat, become suicidal, or in return bully other kids to make themselves feel better. Although some
of these examples of effects may not seem too serious, they really are. Commonly, there are incidents where bullied students go to school and
slaughter many people and eventually kill themselves. For example, several weeks ago Killarney Secondary School had an angered student come to
their cafeteria with a knife looking for someone. Dozens of innocent kids have been killed in these types of incidents because one or several kids
bullied a student.

Argumentative Essay On Bullying
Bullying
Bullying happens everywhere, whether it is at work, school, or home, This is Where It Ends, evidence in the schools, and adult psychiatric health
problems later on in life, are some supporting evidence to show that this is an ongoing problem. According to stopbullying.gov bullying is described
as "An Imbalance of Power: Kids who bully use their power–such as physical strength, access to embarrassing information, or popularity–to control or
harm others. Power imbalances can change over time and in different situations, even if they involve the same people." Bullying helps someone have
dominance over another, it can boost their confidence, and self–esteem. Although bullying has been around for as long as anyone can remember, it is
just recently in the 2000s that is has received serious attention and research (Hymel). There have been many recent events that have focused on this
subject.
"13 Reasons Why", this is a very popular title that most teens, adults, and parents may know. This year, Netflix came out with the original series to
show what bullying can do. In the year of 2011 a 15 year–old girl named Amanda Todd, posted her story on Youtube (Dean). Amanda was seriously
bullied for something that she had done in her middle school past, and was now in high school. One day after school, Amanda was found lying in

was Amanda the victim of physical and social bullying, but she was also the victim of cyberbullying (Dean). Cyberbullying is social network

taunted him and spit on him in the hallways. It didn't occur to him to tell his parents or teachers. Finally, when a group of 20 kids threatened to beat
him up at the carwash the next day, he finally told his older brother, who in turn informed his parents. His dad looked up his main tormentor's phone
number in the phone book and told her dad to make his daughter stop or he'd contact the police. It worked. Josh's story is a story to tell others and
studies show that each year kids just like Josh are victims of bullying. Over 3.2 million school aged students are bullied each year according to https:/
/www.dosomething.org/us/facts/11–facts–about–bullying resulting in about 160,000 staying home from school because of it. 17% of American
students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester. Josh was bullied so badly in the worst ways and he decided to
tell and it changed his life, you can make the decision to tell yourself or let others, but don't just sit there and let the bullies be mean, if josh wouldn't
have told his brother then josh would have had bruises all over his face after school. If you see someone getting bullied i suggest you tell someone it
will change someone's life.
There are several types of bullying. One form of bullying is verbal. People can be verbally bullied by name calling, insults, teasing, intimidation,
homophobic or racist remarks.
Another type of bullying is cyber bullying. People are cyber–bullied by being harassed online, cyberstalking, outing, and catfished. The terms outing
and Catfishing are not well–known but they are truly terrible. Outing is the public display or forwarding of personal communications such as text
messages, emails or instant messaging. If you don't know what Catfishing is, it is a person who fakes there age on an online account and tries luring
out young people, and many teens. There has been some others who have started talking sexualy

Speech On Cyberbullying

  • 1. Speech On Cyberbullying Bullying has been a problem for years and years. But when is someone gonna help stop it? We are here to explain to you why bullying is so bad, and why it needs to stop. We are also gonna give you a few reasons how to fix it. Bullying is a problem, it affects kids at home, in school, and even in communities. Bullying can be physical, like hitting and touching other kids. It can also be verbal, calling people names, threatening, and harassing. Another is Social bullying, that involves using a relationship to hurt someone like, Friendships and dating relationships. Lastly, there is Cyberbullying. Cyberbullying consist of using the internet, or any kind of social media to hurt someone. All of these are terrible. There are over...show more content... Don't be a bystander. If you see that someone is being hurt physically, verbally, even socially tell someone. Tell an adult, your teacher, and even some people you trust. It can be something along the lines of taking electronics away. It could have something to do with school.. You could have them eat lunch alone. They could sit away from people in the class. Then this could teach them to stop. If kids don't get a punishment for bullying and nothing is stopping them, they are going to continue the same behavior someone has to reinforce them and let them know what they are doing is wrong and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Bullying And Bullying : Bullying Bullying is defined as unwanted or aggressive behavior that causes someone to feel afraid or intimidated. This behavior could be something physical, verbal, or something done electronically or through social media. If someone feels threatened by someone's actions or words, it could be considered bullying, even if that was not the intent. There are many types of bullying, how to recognize bullying, how to report bullying, what to do if you see incidents of bullying, and what resources are available to persons who have been bullied. Some people believe that bullying is only seen on television or in the movies but it is a real life issue that is seen and experienced by many every day. People of all ages, races, cultures and backgrounds are affected. There are some who are embarrassed to report bullying but it occurs every day, everywhere. It is important to learn about and understand what causes people to be bullies, as well as understand the effects that being bullied can have on a person. It is important for people to understand all sides of bullying, from the signs of someone being bullied to what you can do to prevent it. Physical bullying occurs mostly at school.According to bullying.gov Middle school is the age when bullying is most common. Almost all middle school students are being affected directly or indirectly by bullying. Students who bully others often have trouble with self–control, following the rules and caring for each other. • 3. Bullying Essay Bullying mentally and physically affects people's well being. This abuse occurs not only in schools around us, but also worldwide. Bullying is a problem, and people need to figure out ways to solve it. There are a lot of different types of bullying: such as, cyber, verbal, social, and physical. Every year nearly 48% of students are bullied. Bullying itself cannot be resolved, but there are ways to help prevent it from happening. High School bullying is very common, and causes a lot of conflicts with fellow students and also teachers. In today's society individuals think it is ok to just take their feelings out on others through a series of different ways. Bullying is an individual's way of feeling better about themself. This has been one...show more content... I first hand have witnessed someone that was bullied to her breaking point. Her and I were friends, she always seemed happy and never seemed to be worried about what people thought about her. She had one bad day in particular that she had told me everything about her bullies and I informed her that I would be there for her more. A week later she was gone. It is real, bullying has real effects on people that takes them to the point of wanting to end their lives. In today's society bullying is just another thing, but it is a major problem and should not be forgotten about. How help someone being bullied? If it is witnessed, tell an adult, stand up to the bully. Individuals being bullied should have someone to talk to, and the people bullying them should be disciplined. There should be harsher punishments for those who victimize others. Although, I believe there should be help involved for them too. Not only are they bullying, but there more or less is a reason they are doing it. The bullies as well should have someone to talk to, someone to reassure them that everything will be okay for them too. 90% of the time an individual that physically or mentally abuses someone is either down on themselves, has a hard time at home, or is jealous of the individual they harass. People need to stick up for the adolescents in these situations, offer them some kind of support. Bullying is a very common thing in high schools, and affects teenage individuals both Get more content on HelpWriting.net

The Anti–Bullying Alliance definition of bullying is: "the repetitive, intentional hurting of one person or group by another person or group, where the relationship involves an imbalance of power". Bullying is frequently defined as deliberately hurtful or aggressive behaviour, usually repeated over a period of time and difficult for victims to defend themselves against in which the goal is intimidation or dominance over another person. • 6. Why Bullying Is Bad Why Do It Alexis Helmin Bullying is a dangerous problem that exists in society today. Many teens have experienced it. Unfortunately there are lots of different ways to bully a victim. Cyber bullying, is a popular way to attack a victim online. Physical bullying, is another form that is commonly used. Whatever the type, the outcome can be devastating. People are cyber bullied all the time. It's how the people who see, do, and experience it that matters. More specifically the people who see bullying happening are the bystanders and upstanders. Upstanders are the people who see bullying and do something about it. Bystanders are the ones who see bullying and don't do anything about it, they often silent or join in. With such a big audience it could be harder to stand up to the bully then. Thats one reason the bully does it online. They can also stay anonymous and can form a clique of people and bystanders. It is easier to...show more content... It can be dangerous for the bully, victim, and the people around them. Although physical bullying is more commonly thought of as beating someone up. It can be just as harmful using words. "Words can hurt too" is a quote from an expert. It is used to remind people that what they say can hurt someone just as much as a slap across the face. Naturally when someone starts a fight, they get consequences such as detention, suspension, and they can get expelled. If parents or teachers don't do something about it immediately, it could get worse the bully might think that they have more power on their victim. Physical bullying can be biased on different things, someone might bully because of weight, gender, religion or beliefs, and wealth. Over 3.2 million students are victims of physical bullying each year. About 160,000 teens stay home from school if fear of bullies. That is a true fact. Essay about Bullying and Harassment Managing bullying and harassment in the workplace When most of us hear the term 'bullying' we seem to reflect back on childhood memories of the schoolyard bully tormenting others for self–amusement, much to the distain of others around them. Unfortunately this seems not to be the only time such behaviour occurs. Workplacebullying and harassment can be defined as 'Offending, socially excluding someone or negatively affecting someone's work tasks. It can occur repeatedly and regularly over a period of time where the confronted ends up in an inferior position and becomes the target of systematic negative social acts' (Einarsen et al, 2007). Workplace bullies have been described as 'conquerors only interested in power and control, who enjoy belittling sub–ordinates' (Dawn et al, 2007). Statistics from an Australian cross– national survey revealed that 70 percent of bullying behaviour was inflicted by a supervisor or manager toward sub–ordinates (Query & Hanley, 2010). Some of the affects bullying and harassment has on workers is low self esteem, anxiety depression, psychosomatic problems (hostility, hyper sensibility, loss of memory and feelings of victimisation), aggression, fear and mistrust, cognitive effects (inability to concentrate or think clearly, reduced problem solving capacity), isolation, loneliness, deterioration of friendships, chronic fatigue and sleep problems (Poilpot–Rocaboy,2006). From an organisational perspective, it is estimated that organisations in Australia lose between $6 billion and $13 billion per annum due to bullying related abuse (Query & Hanley, 2010) and that more than 2 million managers and professionals voluntarily leave their jobs every year due solely to workplace unfairness, including bullying (Query & Hanley, 2010).
