Learning
how to Learn
The best tips for learning that I found after this MOOC.
Shumaila Mumtaz
Introduction
 In today's fast-paced world, knowledge and skills become
obsolete quickly.
 To stay relevant and competitive, we need to continuously
acquire new knowledge and skills.
 However, learning can be challenging, especially when we
encounter tough subjects or complex concepts.
 That's why learning how to learn is a critical skill that can
help us to become more effective learners.
1. Chunking
 Chunking is the process of breaking down complex
information into smaller, more manageable parts
 When we chunk information, we create "chunks" or groups
of related information that are easier to remember and
process
 Chunking helps us to remember more information by
reducing the cognitive load on our working memory
 Benefits of chunking include improved memory and
retention of information, as well as increased speed and
accuracy when completing tasks
2. Metaphors and analogies
 Metaphors and analogies are comparisons between two things that are
not exactly the same but share some similarities.
 Metaphors and analogies can help learners understand complex or
abstract concepts by relating them to something familiar.
 Benefits of using metaphors and analogies in learning:
 They can make learning more interesting and engaging.
 They can help learners remember information more easily.
 They can help learners understand complex concepts by breaking them
down into simpler parts.
3. Practice and Retrieval
 The act of practicing and retrieving information is key to transferring
knowledge from short-term memory to long-term memory.
 Practice involves repeating a skill or concept until it becomes second nature.
 Retrieval involves recalling information from memory, which strengthens
neural pathways and improves retention.
 Effective practice involves setting specific goals, breaking down complex
tasks into smaller parts, and getting feedback on performance.
 Retrieval practice can involve using flashcards, self-testing, or practicing
recalling information without any aids.
Conclusion:
 Learning how to learn is a crucial skill for success in any subject or field
 Chunking can help break down complex information into more manageable
parts, improving memory and retention
 Metaphors and analogies can provide a deeper understanding of complex
concepts in different subjects
 Practice and retrieval are essential for long-term learning and retention
 By incorporating these mental tools into our learning process, we can improve
our ability to master tough subjects and achieve our goals.
