1. The Art of Learning
Nita Maitra
This course discusses some very simple but effective ways of learning and these
insights are based on extensive research from neuroscience and cognitive psychology.
Our brain has amazing abilities but it doesn’t come with an instruction material. If we
understand some of the basics about how our brain works, we can learn in an easier
way and absorb more.
This course is meant to help students reframe how they can think about learning, to
help reduce their anxieties and increase understanding. Students are not expected to
have an in-depth background in any particular subject, instead they are expected to
take these ideas and apply them to whatever subject they are trying to learn or
improve in, help them learn more deeply and effectively. This course has simple yet
powerful tips to help prevent procrastination, improve memory and concludes with
useful test taking tips.
In all the four modules in this course we will learn about different modes of thinking;
how to chunk a basic idea and develop better chunking skills; the difference between
working and long term memory, memory techniques; a few key techniques like
Pomodoro, Deliberate practice and interleaving; actions that hinder students from
learning like Procrastination, over-learning, illusions of learning; the most important
aspects of test preparation and the importance of 'mindsets' in learning.
Learning these simple yet effective techniques surely will enrich our knowledge and
life. Happy learning !
