2. HSE MOMENT : BBS AN APPROACH TOWARDS 100%HSE
What is behavior? How it is influenced!
“The range of actions and mannerisms made by individuals, organisms, systems, or artificial entities in conjunction with themselves or their environment, which includes the other
systems or organisms around as well as the (inanimate) physical environment. It is the response … to various stimuli or inputs, whether internal or external, conscious or subconscious
Behaviour influencing decision‐making resulting in enhanced
behaviour thereby contributing to a desired HSE Culture of
100% HSE MINDSET.
Behaviours are responses of minds and there are two types
of minds in a human brain act differently with different
speed. Lets see the differences to ensure a safe behaviours;
CONSCIOUS MIND
Very analytical can deal with
complex matters
Good for self control
Assists in teaching unconscious
Slow 40 bits/sec Only available
when you are awake
Easily exhausted and eager to hand
over to unconscious mind
Used to justify unconscious
behaviour
Goes in standby mode when doing
repetitive tasks
Cannot easily multitask
Easily flooded –attention blindness
Responsible for few behaviours
“95% plus of our behaviour comes
from the unconscious mind!“
UNCONSCIOUS MIND
• Always on duty
• Good at multitasking
• Good for repetitive tasks
• Very fast 11 Mbits/sec
• Comes pre‐programed Program can
be upgraded or downgraded
• Misperception of info received
• Because of speed can make errors
Biases can lead to less desired
behaviour
• Existing heuristics may be
inappropriate for changing
conditions
Unconscious mind reflects 95% of our behaviour. We need
each other to enable best safe behaviour with following
techniques;
• Assisting colleagues to self reflect
• Acting as their conscious mind when they are in automatic mind
• Pointing out and countering the negative impact of biases
• Helping them create new, safer heuristics
• Reinforcing existing, safe heuristics
