2. Quality Material Inspection, Inc. developed, manufactures and markets the AIRSCAN® line of
Non-Contact Air-Coupled Ultrasonic NDT instrumentation, which eliminates contamination of
sensitive materials during the inspection process.
The core of our manufactured product line is the Sonda 007CX - our Air-Coupled Ultrasonic
AIRSCAN® Instrument. This instrument is designed to be used in place of a conventional UT
instrument, which, along with our AIRSCAN® transducers, eliminates the need for water-coupling
ultrasonic energy into and out of the part to be inspected.
The elimination of water from the inspection process provides the advantages of:
• Parts which are hygroscopic no longer require a drying process
• There is no risk of contamination of sensitive parts by couplant-borne contaminants
• Water control systems are eliminated from the inspection apparatus
• Speed limitations imposed by water-jet systems (or immersion tank turbulence) are
eliminated
For these reasons, AIRSCAN® is particularly well suited to the inspection of:
• Honeycomb-core materials (aluminum or composite face-sheets)
• Foam-core materials (aluminum or composite face-sheets)
• Carbon/carbon materials
• Aluminum Laminates
• Graphite/Epoxy lay-ups
• And other engineered materials
In order to perform NDI testing with our AIRSCAN® instrumentation, we recommend the use of an
appropriate C-Scan motion control/data acquisition system.
AIRSCAN® is (for most practical applications) a through-transmission technique. This is to say that
two transducers are used in the process: one is a transmitter (analogous to a loudspeaker) and the
other a receiver (analogous to a microphone). The transducers are located in a fixed relationship to
one another, with the test panel between them. A very powerful burst of acoustic energy is directed
by the transmitter toward one surface of the panel. A [small] percentage of that energy will pass
through the structure and radiate out the opposite side, detectable by the receiver transducer. The
degree to which the energy is reduced is dependent upon the internal structure of the panel. In the
case of a 'good' lamination or bond a readily detectable signal will be available to the receiver
transducer; whereas in the case of a 'bad' lamination (non-bond, disbond, void, or inclusion) the
signal will be further reduced.
3. A critical element in this process is to maintain the required fixed relationship between
transducers. In most of our applications, this is achieved by means of a scanning gantry, onto
which a panel is placed. The gantry will hold the transducers in a stable yoke assembly (with the
panel between them), and move that assembly along X & Y axes in a raster-scan motion. The
scanning motion is computer controlled by software that moves the scanner in discrete intervals.
At each interval, the software collects the voltage output from the AIRSCAN® instrument and
assigns a predetermined color value to that voltage - which color is then displayed on the
computer monitor. The voltage/position measurements are stored as raw data in a file for future
recall & printing. The result, then, is an image of the panel which directly reflects its internal
structure. With AIRSCAN®, dependant upon the rate of scan and the properties of the material
under test, we can in this way resolve defects that are 1.5mm diameter.
The Sonda can be readily interfaced with many existing C-Scan Data Acquisition system by
means of its' RF or Analog output.
In addition to our AIRSCAN® Instrument (the Sonda 007CX), we offer C-Scan Ultrasonic
Scanning Systems, comprised of:
1) A Scanning Gantry, which provides for motion along 2 axes (We do not currently offer
contour-following capabilities.)
2) Motion Control Hardware including the (PCI) motion control card, motor drivers, & power
supplies
3) Data Acquisition Hardware (a PCI digitizer) which collects the signal output from the Sonda
4) Data Acquisition & Motion Control Software which defines the scan envelope & motion
parameters, and collects and organizes the position and amplitude coordinates for presentation
as an image reflecting the internal structure of the part under test
5) An Appropriate Host Computer.
In order to demonstrate the applicability of our AIRSCAN® Instrumentation and techniques, we
routinely offer an initial feasibility study (at no charge) whereby the potential customer will supply
us with a small sample (roughly 300mm X 300mm) of their material - preferably a "Defect
Standard" - for evaluation at our facility. We will then provide a report of our findings.
In order to arrange for such a feasibility study, you may contact me directly via E-mail at:
norm@qmi-inc.com, or by telephone at 714.903.4500.
