Art is my hobby, my
passion and my world
13
Big Break, № 4, 2018
Howdy! My name is Karina Pravilova, but friends call me
Karish. I am 13 years old and I study in the 7th form of the Grodno
state secondary school # 16. My school is old, but nice and cosy.
There is always very warm and friendly atmosphere. I like to
draw very much. And fortunately my school has free art classes
and really best art teachers. I am very lucky to have an
opportunity to study drawing, composition, sculpture, graphic
disign and digital drawing under the guidance of talented painter
and perfect art teacher A. Izobov.
Sometimes I am as a drawing machine. I can`t stop drawing
when I`m really into it. Generally I draw arts on paper. More often
I use online programs for drawing on phone or the computer. But
sometimes there is the real battle in my head between the
passion to hand drawing and love to computer aided professional
graphic design. It depends on my current mood and the type of
wanting picture.
Also I
am
fond of
Anime
and
Manga
heroes
and
engaged in posing of
animated cartoons or digital annimation (humanization of pets). In
my free time I write stories and fanfics. I really adore green-neon,
dark purple and black colors. Some people say that some of my
heroes are sad, but it`s ok, I think it`s normally to feel different, to
be thoughtful or sad sometimes… especially when you are
14
Big Break, № 4, 2018
teenager. Young life is not only funny and carefree time. It`s also
time of overthinking, complexes, problems, hard-work at school,
first real or false friendship, first disappointments and maybe even
first true feelings.
We have to face different things. But when sadness becomes
your constant status – that’s not good. You should say parents or
friends, maybe teachers about it and remember that you are not
alone and life is really a fantastic gift!
Throughout my life so many people have told me how funny I
am and that I should be a comedian. It's mostly in situations
where during a discussion with someone or a group I say
something sarcastic or funny and people just start laughing, and
then I continue to joke and get more laughs. My mind moves
really fast in such cases. Friends like my stories, arts and we enjoy
spending time together online or in real life. We have a lot in
common. But it`s not happen too often. I`m realy half extrovert
and half introvert. I know it is called ambivert). I need time and
space for being alone with my thoughts, plans, dreams,
inspiration, music, pictures... When I`m drawing I prefer to listen
to Monstercat, Marshmello, Trap Nation, Imagine Dragons. It`s
really cool music. I don`t know what profession to chose but I
think that my future carreer will be connected with art. Illustrators
and graphic designers are needed and this job is very up-to-date.
My dream is to write books and illustrate them myself. I like to
learn English and art. Languages help to communicate with friends
and painters from the whole world. Today I tried to be a journalist
(as I wrote this text). In this article you can see some of my digital
drawings. I hope you like it. So my dreams to write for readers
started to come true. Maybe I will be a drawing journalist or
writer). Well, it was some information about me, you can text me
if you are fond of the same things! :3 See you soon:3 My
nickname in art community is Kross Crynight. Find me on
Instagram, or here is my Email: krosscrynight04@gmail.com

Every year the English Language teachers prepare and
organize a series of interesting events for pupils. For example:
season holidays celebration, annual Create-A-Greeting Card
Contest, poem reading contest, song contest,
greeting cards exhibition, quizzes, brainstorms,
drama performance etc. What they do all have in
common, however, is that they provide an
opportunity for young English language
learners to practise using English in a relaxed and
friendly setting. These events also give participants opportunities to
express themselves creatively in English, for
example, through drama, poetry, singing,
answering or storytelling. Alternatively, give them
opportunities to explore visual communication, for
example art or dance, with a post-performance
discussion in English. Pupils enjoy these events
very much.

Oven Fries:
This is a great alternative to the regular unhealthy French fries that
you love.
Ingredients:
• 8 potatoes medium sized

• Garlic oil (you can use any other flavored oil or even olive
oil).
• Salt per taste
How To Prepare:
20
Big Break, № 4, 2018
1. Preheat the oven to 200 degree
2. Cut off the top and bottom of each potato, making sure you
cut only a small bit off.
3. Slice the potatoes through the middle to create a long cut.
Place them on the wide base that they now have and slice into
thin strips. You can cut these as strips or wedges.
4. Place these in a bowl of water and mix around with your
fingers. This will help make the fries crispier. Strain and place
on a tissue or dish towel to dry.
5. Take a baking sheet and place the fries. Sprinkle the oil
ensuring all the slices are covered.
6. Cook for about 40 minutes in the oven. Make sure you turn
them every 10 minutes to ensure they are cooked from all
sides.

Historical Notes
The Great Fire of London
In the 17th Century, people were not as aware of the dangers
of fire as they are today. Buildings were made of timber covered in
pitch and tightly packed together.
The design of buildings meant flames could easily spread
from building to building. Following a long, dry summer the city
was suffering a drought; water was scarce and the wooden houses
had dried out, making them easier to burn.
Londoners had originally not been alarmed by the blaze due
to fires being a common occurrence at the time.
How did the Great Fire of London start?
The Great Fire of London started on Sunday, 2 September
1666 in a baker's shop belonging to Thomas Farynor.
Although he claimed to have extinguished the fire, three
hours later, at 1am, his house was a blazing inferno.
Farynor's bakery was situated in Pudding Lane. The fire
spread quickly down Pudding Lane and carried on down Fish Hill
and towards the Thames.
24
Big Break, № 4, 2018
The fire continued to spread rapidly, helped by a strong wind
from the east; when it reached the Thames it hit warehouses that
were stocked with combustible products such as oil and tallow.
Fortunately the fire couldn't spread south of the river because a
previous blaze in 1633 had already destroyed a section of London
Bridge.
What happened?
The Great Fire of London swept through the city in
September 1666 devastating many buildings including 13,200
houses, 87 parish churches, The Royal Exchange, Guildhall and St.
Paul’s Cathedral, built during the Middle Ages, was totally
destroyed.
Although the verified death toll was only six people it is
unknown how many people died in the great fire of London
because many more died through indirect causes.
In 1666 there was no organized fire brigade. Fire-fighting
was very basic with little skill or knowledge involved. Leather
buckets, axes and water squirts were used to fight the fire but had
little effect.
Samuel Pepys, a diarist of the period and Clerk to the Royal
Navy, observed the fire and recommended to the King that
buildings were pulled down, as it may be the only way to stop the
fire.
The Mayor was ordered to use fire hooks to pull-down
burning buildings but the fire continued to spread.
People forced to evacuate their homes chose to bury or hide
what valuables they couldn't carry. Pepys buried his expensive
cheese and wine.
How did they put out the Great Fire of London?
Pepys spoke to the Admiral of the Navy and agreed they
should blow up houses in the path of the fire. The hope was that by
doing this they would create a space to stop the fire spreading from
house to house.
The Navy, which had been using gunpowder at the time,
carried out the request and the fire was mostly under control by
Wednesday, 5 September 1666, although small fires continued to
25
Big Break, № 4, 2018
break out and the ground remained too hot to walk on for several
days afterwards.
Pepys recorded in his diary that even the King, Charles II,
was seen helping to put out the fire.
What happened next? London had to be almost totally
reconstructed. Initially this meant temporary buildings were
erected that were ill-equipped and enabled disease to spread easily.
Many people died from this and the harsh winter that followed the
fire.
The cost of the fire was estimated to be £10 million - at a
time when London's annual income was only £12,000 and many
people were financially ruined and debtors' prisons became over-
crowded.
As a result, early fire brigades were formed by insurance
companies as a way of recouping the costs of extinguishing fires.
Sir Christopher Wren planned the new city and the rebuilding
of London took over 30 years. The site where the fire first started is
now marked by a 202-foot monument, which was built between
1671 and 1677.

So here are Top Fire Safety Tips:
1. Working smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a fire
by nearly 50 percent. They are a critical first step for staying safe,
but in order to be effective, they have to be working properly. For
the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your
home and in every sleeping area. Consider installing a smoke alarm
that has a 10-year battery.
28
Big Break, № 4, 2018
2. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can
burn, and always blow them out when you leave the room or before
you go to sleep. Teach older kids not to use candles in their
bedrooms, unless supervised by an adult.
3. Use common sense in the kitchen. Limit distractions when
cooking and don’t leave a hot oven or stovetop unattended.
4. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency,
and make sure you know how it works. You might be surprised
that most people don’t know how to use one.
5. At this point, preteens and teens should know how to respond
to the sound of a smoke alarm. But it never hurts to make sure.
Make sure they know to get low and get out when they hear it.
6. Practice feeling the door, doorknob and cracks around the
door with the back of your hand to see if they are too hot. Help
your children practice this step.Together, have your family plan
and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of your
29
Big Break, № 4, 2018
house in case of a fire. It is important to have an alternate exit in
case one is blocked by fire.
7. Choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away
from your home.
8. If you cannot safely escape your home or apartment, keep
smoke out of the room by covering vents and cracks around the
door and call 911 or your fire department as quickly as possible.
Then signal for help at the window with a light-colored cloth or a
flashlight.

I am very lucky to have an opportunity to study drawing, composition, sculpture, graphic disign and digital drawing under the guidance of talented painter and perfect art teacher A. Izobov. Sometimes I am as a drawing machine. I can`t stop drawing when I`m really into it. Generally I draw arts on paper. More often I use online programs for drawing on phone or the computer. But sometimes there is the real battle in my head between the passion to hand drawing and love to computer aided professional graphic design. It depends on my current mood and the type of wanting picture. Also I am fond of Anime and Manga heroes and engaged in posing of animated cartoons or digital annimation (humanization of pets). In my free time I write stories and fanfics. I really adore green-neon, dark purple and black colors. Some people say that some of my heroes are sad, but it`s ok, I think it`s normally to feel different, to be thoughtful or sad sometimes… especially when you are 14
  • 15. Big Break, № 4, 2018 teenager. Young life is not only funny and carefree time. It`s also time of overthinking, complexes, problems, hard-work at school, first real or false friendship, first disappointments and maybe even first true feelings. We have to face different things. But when sadness becomes your constant status – that’s not good. You should say parents or friends, maybe teachers about it and remember that you are not alone and life is really a fantastic gift! Throughout my life so many people have told me how funny I am and that I should be a comedian. It's mostly in situations where during a discussion with someone or a group I say something sarcastic or funny and people just start laughing, and then I continue to joke and get more laughs. My mind moves really fast in such cases. Friends like my stories, arts and we enjoy spending time together online or in real life. We have a lot in common. But it`s not happen too often. I`m realy half extrovert and half introvert. I know it is called ambivert). I need time and space for being alone with my thoughts, plans, dreams, inspiration, music, pictures... When I`m drawing I prefer to listen to Monstercat, Marshmello, Trap Nation, Imagine Dragons. It`s really cool music. I don`t know what profession to chose but I think that my future carreer will be connected with art. Illustrators and graphic designers are needed and this job is very up-to-date. My dream is to write books and illustrate them myself. I like to learn English and art. Languages help to communicate with friends and painters from the whole world. Today I tried to be a journalist (as I wrote this text). In this article you can see some of my digital drawings. I hope you like it. So my dreams to write for readers started to come true. Maybe I will be a drawing journalist or writer). Well, it was some information about me, you can text me if you are fond of the same things! :3 See you soon:3 My nickname in art community is Kross Crynight. • 18. Big Break, № 4, 2018 Every year the English Language teachers prepare and organize a series of interesting events for pupils. For example: season holidays celebration, annual Create-A-Greeting Card Contest, poem reading contest, song contest, greeting cards exhibition, quizzes, brainstorms, drama performance etc. What they do all have in common, however, is that they provide an opportunity for young English language learners to practise using English in a relaxed and friendly setting. These events also give participants opportunities to express themselves creatively in English, for example, through drama, poetry, singing, answering or storytelling. Alternatively, give them opportunities to explore visual communication, for example art or dance, with a post-performance discussion in English. Pupils enjoy these events very much. 18

  • 24. Big Break, № 4, 2018 Historical Notes The Great Fire of London In the 17th Century, people were not as aware of the dangers of fire as they are today. Buildings were made of timber covered in pitch and tightly packed together. The design of buildings meant flames could easily spread from building to building. Following a long, dry summer the city was suffering a drought; water was scarce and the wooden houses had dried out, making them easier to burn. Londoners had originally not been alarmed by the blaze due to fires being a common occurrence at the time. How did the Great Fire of London start? The Great Fire of London started on Sunday, 2 September 1666 in a baker's shop belonging to Thomas Farynor. Although he claimed to have extinguished the fire, three hours later, at 1am, his house was a blazing inferno. Farynor's bakery was situated in Pudding Lane. The fire spread quickly down Pudding Lane and carried on down Fish Hill and towards the Thames. 24
  • 25. Big Break, № 4, 2018 The fire continued to spread rapidly, helped by a strong wind from the east; when it reached the Thames it hit warehouses that were stocked with combustible products such as oil and tallow. Fortunately the fire couldn't spread south of the river because a previous blaze in 1633 had already destroyed a section of London Bridge. What happened? The Great Fire of London swept through the city in September 1666 devastating many buildings including 13,200 houses, 87 parish churches, The Royal Exchange, Guildhall and St. Paul’s Cathedral, built during the Middle Ages, was totally destroyed. Although the verified death toll was only six people it is unknown how many people died in the great fire of London because many more died through indirect causes. In 1666 there was no organized fire brigade. Fire-fighting was very basic with little skill or knowledge involved. Leather buckets, axes and water squirts were used to fight the fire but had little effect. Samuel Pepys, a diarist of the period and Clerk to the Royal Navy, observed the fire and recommended to the King that buildings were pulled down, as it may be the only way to stop the fire. The Mayor was ordered to use fire hooks to pull-down burning buildings but the fire continued to spread. People forced to evacuate their homes chose to bury or hide what valuables they couldn't carry. Pepys buried his expensive cheese and wine. How did they put out the Great Fire of London? Pepys spoke to the Admiral of the Navy and agreed they should blow up houses in the path of the fire. The hope was that by doing this they would create a space to stop the fire spreading from house to house. The Navy, which had been using gunpowder at the time, carried out the request and the fire was mostly under control by Wednesday, 5 September 1666, although small fires continued to 25

Pepys recorded in his diary that even the King, Charles II, was seen helping to put out the fire. What happened next? London had to be almost totally reconstructed. Initially this meant temporary buildings were erected that were ill-equipped and enabled disease to spread easily. Many people died from this and the harsh winter that followed the fire. The cost of the fire was estimated to be £10 million - at a time when London's annual income was only £12,000 and many people were financially ruined and debtors' prisons became over- crowded. As a result, early fire brigades were formed by insurance companies as a way of recouping the costs of extinguishing fires. Sir Christopher Wren planned the new city and the rebuilding of London took over 30 years. The site where the fire first started is now marked by a 202-foot monument, which was built between 1671 and 1677. 26

Working smoke alarms reduce the chances of dying in a fire by nearly 50 percent. They are a critical first step for staying safe, but in order to be effective, they have to be working properly. For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleeping area. Consider installing a smoke alarm that has a 10-year battery. 28

Teach older kids not to use candles in their bedrooms, unless supervised by an adult. 3. Use common sense in the kitchen. Limit distractions when cooking and don’t leave a hot oven or stovetop unattended. 4. Have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen in case of emergency, and make sure you know how it works. You might be surprised that most people don’t know how to use one. 5. At this point, preteens and teens should know how to respond to the sound of a smoke alarm. But it never hurts to make sure. Make sure they know to get low and get out when they hear it. 6. Practice feeling the door, doorknob and cracks around the door with the back of your hand to see if they are too hot.
