IAR is the oldest school for the recording arts and sciences in the world, with graduates
employed across the globe in all facets of audio. The Dean of Academic Affairs holds the
responsibility of guiding the curriculum and tracking the progress of both students and
faculty.

Key Achievements:
Institute level work
Prepared for the ACCSC re-accreditation on-site visit, and provided for any academic
needs the team had.
Helped guide the re-accreditation process for the year 2015, and was key in the
preparation of the Self Evaluation Report (SER).
Prepared and submitted the application for reaccreditation with ACCSC.
Readied faculty and staff for the ACCSC re-accreditation on-site visit.
Regularly guide the upcoming term assigns, and schedule with the registrar.
Regularly worked with the Asst. Dean of Students to resolve student/ student and
student/ faculty issues.
With the search committee, was integral in the search and selection of a new Dean of
Students.
With the search committee, was integral in the search and selection of a new campus
President.
Instrumental in the decision to create and fill the Dean of Instructional Technology
position.
Started the department of business, hiring the chair and monitoring the progress.
Managed articulation agreements with Five Towns College, LaGuardia Community
College, and others.

Updated the Faculty Handbook to current status.
Guided the process of integrating the campus management system Moodle to be used
for back-bone functions:
o Faculty discussion boards for curriculum maintenance and upgrades.
o Location for syllabi and teacher guides (documents used to guide particular
points of learning required, and resources to help teachers to prepare their
lesson plans).
o Repository for exams and assessments for faculty to access as well as student
services for the purpose of student make-up exams.
o Preparation exams for ProTools certification exams.
Guided the institution of Faculty Development Plans for all faculty, including a point
system. Appointed Dr. Richards Mills (LA&S chair) to manage the program.
Created the academic governance model employed by IAR’s academic faculty,
including Curriculum and Instruction, Faculty Development and Review, Library,
Academic Standards, Faculty Review, and program level committees in Audio
Recording, Music Business, and Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Created and maintained all committee meeting schedules.
Began IAR’s first official library and hired a librarian to manage it.
Introduced student email addresses.
Guided the faculty in installing a new grading system that includes +/- for letter
grades awarded, which gives the student a more accurate progress report which, in
turn, helps the institute acquire a better picture of student progress.
Installed a point system into the Audio Recording Program (ARP) so that every
assigned task for students had an associate point value, and guided the faculty in to
the use of the system. After success with it, the system was installed in the Music and
Entertainment Management and Production (MEMP) program also.
Created the post of Development Coach, whose role is to help facilitate the ability of
faculty to return to college in pursuit of their next level of academic degree. This post
has helped guide approximately 20 faculty to either begin or continue on this path.
Managed the increase of faculty who have at least Bachelors degree, and increased
the level of faculty who have obtained a Masters or higher. On campus, there is now
a predominance of faculty with Masters level degree or higher.
Manage a faculty of 70+ members, as well as guide curriculum choices.
Managed New York State teaching, director, and agent licenses for entire faculty and
staff.
Program level work
Maintained/updated all IAR in-house written lab manuals in coordination with the
faculty.
Re-registered the Audio Recording and Production program leading to the 900-hour
certificate with the Bureau of Propriety Supervision, (BPSS), a division of the New
York State Education Department (NYSED).
Over saw the re-write of the Music and Entertainment Management and Production
program (MEMP) with the chair of the department. Filed for review by the external
evaluator.
Filed the updated MEMP program with BPSS.
Authored and guided the creation of a potential new program in Office and Arts
Administration.
In 2015, began using the Plan for Assessing Student Learning (PASL) to begin to
view outcome trends within the programs.
o Began developing the Plan for Assessing Student Learning (PASL) to
determine trends and outcome results from the programs offered. It was a
lengthy process to get faculty educated in its use, and what artifacts to use.

These artifacts, and the methods used went under several revisions, but in
2014 the method and data points finally were settled.
Managed reviews of all student surveys of faculty, and met with faculty regularly to
discuss the results, make recommendations to improve outcomes, and develop skills
to address deficiencies.
Used Grade Distribution Reports to guide faculty to better success in student
development outcomes.
Used ProTools certification results to guide faculty to improve outcomes.
Submitted updated Audio Recording and Production (ARP) and Advanced Media
Production (AMP) and had approval from the external evaluator.
Filed ARP with BPSS.
Guided full time faculty towards taking ownership of the coursework they teach by
creating the role of the ‘curriculum lead’, a post that guides the specific course and
provides the greater faculty someone to discuss aspects of the course, whether the
faculty member is new to it or needs to refresh on the course.
Updated and received approval from New York State Education and Accrediting
Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) for the Audio Recording
Program (ARP).
Guided faculty in the rewrite and installation of the ProTools 101 and 110 books/
coursework across AUD 103 Basics of Digital Audio, AUD 104 Digital Music
Production, AUD 203 Mix1, and AUD 207 MIDI.
Organized the largest single ProTools certification group in Avid’s history, the
company that produces the most popular and powerful software program in the
recording industry.
Degree-granting status preparation work
Integral in the preparation of the Self Study report to NY State to apply for degree
granting status.
Contacted and engaged state approved curriculum evaluator for the Audio Recording
Technology (ART) Associate degree program, providing a conduit between the
evaluator and the faculty allowing for discussion and improvements to the proposed
program based on a careful review of the evaluators suggestions and our proposal.
Started the department of Liberal Arts and Science, hiring a chair and monitoring the
progress.
Guided faculty in the creation of IAR’s proposed curriculum for Associates degree.
Additional campus-wide activities
Began establishing “The Dean’s Corner” on IAR Records; a location for songs
recorded by students with the Dean at various times in the year.
Created and guided the processes and procedures to allow for studio time to be
available for students in the evening, where 2 classrooms are opened as recording
suites. Requirements for permission were established, and arrangements for various
department input were made.
Awarded alumni Jack Douglas his long-awaited diploma as a graduate of IAR from
1969 at the 2014 graduation ceremony at the Apollo theatre.
Executive produced IAR’s second holiday record. Produced, engineered and
performed on many of the tracks as well as using student, faculty, and staff as artists
and engineers.

using student, faculty, and staff as artists and engineers.

Key Achievements:
Was selected a member of the ‘League’, a guiding group of faculty and staff in the
interim between the previous Dean and the appointment of a new Dean, as a result of
my leadership roles in guiding curriculum. Primary responsibilities included
maintenance and update of curriculum and lab manuals, and providing faculty a voice
at the meetings.
Provided faculty physical forums to discuss the current state of the course-work in
question, and express their opinions on what they would like to see developed.
Created a new point system for all labs to better reflect student progress. Previously,
students either completed labs or did not. With this system, students were tracked in
their progression and as, the institution found, many strived for the success of
achieving the highest grade they could.
Designed and installed coursework updates and redesigns.
Updated all lab material as needed as software updates and hardware changes arose.
Authored labs for classes in Basics of Digital Audio, Digital Music Production, Audio
Processing and Storage, Mix2 Lab, and others.
Rewrote the Mix1 Lab manual, a course at IAR that delves in to the science and
practices of mixing.
Installed computer based lab work within ADE 103 Audio Electronics II, where
students explore installation of software and troubleshooting typical issues with
DAWs.
Guided the beta-testing of labs prior to installation in the program.
