Design degree programs in the UK saw rapid growth between 2000-2010, with yearly intake increasing by 40% and design becoming the second most popular degree after nursing. However, this also led to an industry backlash about producing too many graduates without enough jobs. Between 2010-2014, as fees increased, design degree applications began dropping along with fears about the "McDonaldization" of design education. Industry groups took action to influence debate and policy to better support design education and the role of design skills. Going forward, there are debates around refocusing design education on core skills or taking a broader approach to develop analytical, creative and communication abilities.
