Institutional Context
Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto (UofT) has
more than 1,000 programs of study supported by 22,000
faculty and staff, and more than 95,000 currently enrolled
students.
The University of Toronto Libraries are 44 libraries at three
campuses, and together we support learning, teaching and
research at the University of Toronto. In addition to more
than 12 million volumes in 341 languages, 1,500,000
electronic resources in various formats, 28,000 linear
metres of archival material and 500 terabytes of data, our
international network of resource sharing partnerships
extends access on our students’ and faculty members’ behalf
to materials held by thousands of other institutions.
In March 2022 we received the email that we had been
matched as networking partners, and promptly
scheduled hour-long, bi-weekly video calls for 3 months
from March – May 2022.
Some of our topics of conversation included:
• Our goals for this program
• Our career path and current job roles
• Reflection on our professional strengths and
weaknesses
• How our libraries promote our services to users
• The role of mentorship in the library profession
• The impact of COVID-19 on our library services
This poster is devoted to one of the topics we shared, which
was about our respective institutional repositories.
Definition of Institutional Repository
"A university-based institutional repository is a set of
services that a university offers to the members of its
community for the management and dissemination of
digital materials created by the institution and its
community members. It is most essentially
an organizational commitment to the stewardship of these
digital materials, including long-term preservation where
appropriate, as well as organization and access or
distribution.” (Lynch 2003, 328).

Campus. The UWISpace collections were developed to
preserve the intellectual output of the campus and provide

learning activities of the university community.
Some of the materials that are stored in institutional
repositories include faculty research (articles, presentations,
data sets, preprints or post prints), student theses and
dissertations, teaching materials, institutional administrative
records, conference papers and presentations.
