In my community, research and postgraduate studies, technology and
engineering sciences, the need for Equity-Diversity&Inclusion (EDI) is a
current issue, although during the COVID19 pandemic it has been more
evident. So, caring for empathy with others is highly desirable and not just
applying the rules in information service and all activities in the institution.
The challenge of our time is great. As library workers, says Lotts (2021),
our creativity is one of the skills (curiosity, open-mindedness, imagination
and problem solving) that can help us collaborate-integrate (us)-to learn
and grow from failure and frustration. And why not, even enjoy the great
challenge!
My position as a person and as a professional in LIS is one: ready for
what's next!
At CINVESTAV Saltillo
Inclusion: our priority
EDI (Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) impacted my work in a number of
ways. I became more aware of the EDI issues in recent years as there have
been many movements on EDI values and practices around the world.
A series of EDI related workshops have been offered at my library and we
have been engaging in continued efforts and conversations around EDI in
the library. One of the efforts we are putting into is incorporating EDI into
our daily work.
As a systems Librarian, I work with various library systems and web
content. Our team researched and studied the ways to improve web
accessibility and had regular meetings to come up with ideas last year.
Now, when I work on any systems related projects, I always put “universal
design” in mind since I want any systems/web content to be accessible to
all people regardless of any factors.
At UMass Boston
Evaluate and re-create web content to make accessible to everyone:
Not only making the web content ADA-compliant, but also making it easy
to understand for the people who have different cultural backgrounds and
who use English as a second language is crucial.
Join the efforts to correct offensive subject headings:
Outdated subject headings have been a big issue in libraries as they could
be very offensive to a certain group of people. We’ve put efforts in
correcting them as best as we can.
Advocate or request EDI related features/enhancements to the 3rd party
systems: Unfortunately, there are things that are out of our control -
things like the 3rd party library systems that we are using. But we keep
making requests or advocating the improvements related to EDI.
Brainstorm and share any EDI related ideas or projects with team
members regularly

A general but significant definition is that of US Department of Housing and
Urban Development: Inclusion is a state of being valued [for their unique
qualities and experience a sense of belonging], respected and supported.
Work together! Each person in their own, in the same place and at the
same time.
To begin with, as can be seen in the image below, open dialogue and
activities that beautify the environment, in the entire community of
CINVESTAV Saltillo we want to do better. All together!
The first stage of the Green Office program and after the suspension of
activities due to the COVID19 pandemic includes: the ecological
management of garbage, the reasonable use of water and electricity, as
well as the care of green areas.
Green Office is very simple, yes. We are starting again what we already had
and more.
