To whom it may concern
I am writing this letter in support of Hsin-Hsien Huang, a chemistry student who graduated
from the University of Manchester in 2016. Hsin-Hsien attended my courses in bioorganic
chemistry, and I have had opportunities to interact more closely on a day-to-day basis with her
as her supervisor during her internship at my laboratory this summer.
Hsin-Hsien has gained significant experience working beyond her undergraduate studies by
working as a summer intern in the Mudgett Laboratory (2015) and Flitsch laboratory (2016),
learning both chemical and biological techniques. More specifically, in my laboratory she has
gained experience using many of the modern analytical techniques, such as HPLC, NMR, UV-
VIS, IR, and basic separation methods. In our laboratory, she also worked with calorimetry and
Western Blotting and spent a week at the biotech company Prozomix Ltd., learning about high
throughput protein expression and purification in an industrial setting.
During her internship, I found Hsin-Hsien very organized and hard-working. Her work involved
the expression and characterization of glycosyltransferases, enzyme which are challenging to
study. She gave two presentations of her work, with powerpoint slides that were of high
quality and clear and lucid in style. She completed a significant amount of work in a limited
timeframe and showed great interest in a broad range of projects, well beyond her own work.
I think Hsin-Hsien has the determination and talent to succeed as a scientist and I wish her all
the best for a bright future career.
If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Yours
