Balsall Common pupils become ‘Smart Scientists’ for a
day to learn about energy with E.ON
Pupils at Balsall Common Primary School had the chance to become
‘Smart Scientists’ for a day and learn how to save energy as part of
E.ON’s Smart Kids education programme.
The Year 6 pupils took part in interactive workshops to understand
more about energy, where it comes from and how to use it efficiently
in the home. The pupils completed a series of hands-on games and
activities with the support of Professor Smart Alec and his
assistant Neon Bright.
During the sessions pupils donned white lab coats and worked against
the clock to help Professor Smart Alec regain his smartness by the
end of the lesson.
Howard Rose, Fundraising and Publicity Manager at Balsall Common
Primary School, said: “The Smart Kids workshops were a fun and
creative way for children to learn all about energy and how to use
it wisely in the home. The activities were pitched at the right
level and our pupils really threw themselves into the different
challenges.
“The two characters, Professor Smart Alec and Neon Bright, did a
good job of combining the serious nature of the topic with some
light hearted entertainment. The pupils have learned some useful
tips to save energy and came out of the workshop full of enthusiasm
to share them at home. This is another example of working with local
and national businesses to enhance curriculum and bring about better
outcomes for pupils.”
Alison Gibson, Senior Community Relations Officer at E.ON, said: “We
designed our Smart Kids workshops to offer schools something
different, a way to bring energy alive for pupils and leave them
with a practical understanding of what it is and how we all use it.
2. It complements the national science curriculum, but we hope also
provides a fun opportunity for children to test their understanding
of energy with a series of hands-on activities.”
The Smart Kids workshops form part of E.ON’s broader educational
activities, developed to educate children about where energy comes
from and how it is used in our everyday lives. As well as Smart
Kids, E.ON also offers educational activities through its Energy
Experience programme which has been created to help teachers working
with young people aged 5-16 years. Energy Experience includes online
and classroom activities which support the curriculum, and which
have been designed to help pupils understand all stages of energy
production, distribution and consumption. Full details and resources
