The Balsall Common Primary School Cooking Club took a tour of the local Hickory's Smokehouse restaurant. The children saw the kitchens, smoker, gardens, and cinema on site. They learned how the restaurant prepares fresh food and uses the special smoker. The General Manager said the children enjoyed learning about how the modern smokehouse operates. The Cooking Club coordinator thanked the restaurant for the insightful experience which enhanced the pupils' learning.

Balsall Common Primary Cooking Club Visit Hickory’s Smokehouse
Balsall Common Primary School Cooking Club were lucky enough to take a tour of new local restaurant
Hickory’s Smokehouse.
The children first had a tour of the restaurant, gardens and were surprised to find they even had a cinema on
site! Next it was a tour of the business end looking at the kitchens, where all the food is freshly prepared, and
finally the £15,000 smoker that was specially imported from America.
Before leaving there was still time to make some special Mocktails with barrista Andy Swain.
Chris Jukes, General Manager, said, “It has been great having the children in to look round;you can see from
their faces they have really enjoyed it. Hopefully we can do more things with the school and the Cooking Club.”
Howard Rose, Funding & Publicity Manager and Cooking Club coordinator said: “A huge thank you to Chris
and his team for allowing us to visit and for making us so welcome. The children enjoyed the day and had a
real insight into how a professional modern smokehouse restaurant runs. This is another great example of how
by connecting with a local business as a school you can enhance pupils learning”
