1. President’s message
Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, President 2013-14
When we look around the world, we find that alumni are a major force for nurturing social bonds, promoting
excellence in youth and contributing to heathy social transformation. DUEDAA, the alumni association of the
Economics Departments of Dhaka University, has been engaged over two decades for fostering the
transformative potential of its alumni through a steadily expanding range of activities. Objectives have been
formulated with clarity and pursued systematically. As a result, DUEDAA already has several landmark
contributions to its credit.
DUEDAA Scholarship Program is perhaps the largest of its kind in operation and continues to grow further
thanks to the generosity of DUEDAA members and institutional sponsors. The Scholarship program provides
help to deserving but needy students from all over the country who gain admission in the DU economics
department. In 2014, 121 students from 1st year to MA students received scholarships totaling Taka 30 lacs.
DUEDAA Alumni Directory and Annual Get-togethers provide invaluable opportunities for alumni to be in
touch and socially mingle for deepening their alumni bonds. The institution of Annual Picnics is now firmly
established as occasions for much-needed relaxation and fellow-feeling. The Alumni Directory helps to put
members in touch with each other and is updated at suitable intervals.
DUEDAA Essay Competition for the Youth is now in its third year and is open to students across the country
and those studying abroad. The themes for the three annual competitions have been: i) Economic Future of
Bangladesh in the Next Ten Years ii) Role of Technology in the Economic development of Bangladesh and iii)
How Important is Social Development for Economic Growth? It is indeed heartening that prize-winners have
come from a wide diversity of institutions that included students from Dhaka University, North-South
University, East-West University, Chapainawabganj College, Dhaka College, United International University,
Seriniabat Government Textile College of Barisal and a young teacher from Jagannath University.
Social Support: DUEDAA has been keenly supportive of youth who aspire for excellence in diverse fields. An
important support was to the Everest-winning team of Nishat and Mohit who planted among other flags a
DUEDAA flag on Mount Everest when they scaled the highest peak in the world on 19 may, 2012. DUEDAA
was proud to accord them a reception during its scholarship award ceremony in July of the same year.
DUEDAA has also been pro-active in providing support to groups in distress. Two such instances were to the
victims of Aila cyclone in coastal Satkhira in 2009 and to victims of Rana Plaza building collapse in 2014.
Step by step and with the active involvement of Executive Committee and general alumni, DUEDAA is
expanding and consolidating its activities with the triple focus on the alma-mater, the alumni, and the subject
2. of economics. It has been a privilege to serve DUEDAA alongside the highly motivated and dynamic members
of the Executive Committee of 2013-14 and I thank them all as well all of our members. As we make a
transition to a new leadership for 2015-16, I call on the creative and committed engagement of all our alumni
and to the leadership that will follow to take these activities to new heights and in the process firmly establish
DUEDAA as a role model for alumni associations in Bangladesh.
