1. A Tale of Two Sisters Opening Sequence
Camera
The first thing we see is a white bowl of water. A bird’s eye view is used to shown
this. We see a man washing his hands in the bowl, which leads that audience to
think that he is very clean or he needs to be hygienic because of where he works.
An establishing shot is then used so that the audience can see that the man is in
fact a doctor which explains why he was washing his hands and we can see that
there is nothing around that is harmful which leads the audience believe that he
works at an institute. We are also shown his patient coming in and because of the
establishing shot we can tell that she is ill by the way she has been brought in. An
over the shoulder shot is then used so that we can concentrate on the doctor and
not the patient, this leads the audience to believe that something is going to
happen to him at this point in time. A zoom in is then used on the doctor till we
get a close up and the audience can see that the doctor wants information out of
the young woman.
Editing
The first thing we see after the production companies isthe names of the
producers. Transitions are used to make the different produces fade in and out.
When the actors names come on, effects are used to walk it look like they are
dissolving into the water or been blown off by he wind. The picture in the
background starts moving which gives the audience the impression that this film
has something to do with water. When the film title comes on, the writing is in
red, whichrepresents blood.
Sound
Through the title sequence we her piano in the background. It is in minor key but
is doesn’t create suspense, the music sounds more sad rather then scary. Before
we see the young woman we hear her feet drag across the floor which leads the
audience to believe that she is unable to walk properly or take care of herself. In
the clip the doctor is the only one talking. He is asking the young girl questions
but she doesn’t answer. What he says makes it seem like he is after information
but he is still concerned for her.
Mise-en-scene
In this clip we know that this is some kind of hospital, it looks more like an
intuition because there is nothing dangerous around. The man is dressed smartly
and is wearing a lab coat, which tells the audience that he is a doctor. When we
see the young woman, she is dressed in sleepwear that looks simple and easy to
put on and take off for if anything happens. The only things in the room are two
chairs and a table. This shows that the doctor wants to talk to his patent. When
the young woman gets brought in, there is someone dressed as a carer that
brings her in.
The title of the opening is not scary ad doesn’t put the audience on the edge of
there seat. But because of this, it makes tat audience wait to jump which keeps
them watching. The audience want to know what happened to the young woman
2. and want to know why she is there. The doctor could also have a bigger
significance to the film but the audience don’t know it. The audience get the
feeling that the young woman is a killer or victim, the doctor comes across as
someone that would end up as a victim.
