1. Then: Britain’s first £1m goalkeeper joined
Everton from Leeds in 2003. Played 100
games for the Toffees before an ankle injury
forced him to retire in 2006, aged 38.
Now: After a brief spell as Bradford City’s
goalkeeping coach, Martyn is now living in
a quiet Yorkshire village with his family away
from the spotlight. He also plays Sunday
League cricket for his village team.
NIGEL
MARTYN
Then: Signed from Millwall for £1.5m, Cahill
was a favourite at Goodison Park. Finished
the season as Everton’s top scorer with 12
goals in all competitions.
Now: Left Everton after eight seasons to join
New York Red Bulls in 2012. Cahill is one of
Australia’s highest profile players with a record
39 goals for the Socceroos. Currently plays for
Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.
TIM
CAHILL
Then: Joined Everton from Marseille in 2003,
often deputising for Alan Stubbs at the heart
of defence. The Nigerian went on to make
over 250 appearances for Everton before
leaving for Fenerbahce in 2010.
Now: Following a brief loan spell at then
Premier League side Norwich City in 2014,
Yobo was released by Fenerbache and
remains a free agent.
JOSEPH
YOBO
Then: Weir was a regular during his eight
years on Merseyside, becoming club captain
before returning to Scotland with Rangers.
Now: After retiring aged 41, Weir returned
to Everton to coach the reserves. Was
appointed manager of Sheffield United in
2013 but was sacked after only 13 games.
Currently assistant manager at Championship
promotion chasers Brentford.
DAVID
WEIR
Then: Born in Merseyside, Hibbert was
steady and reliable, while is work rate often
went unnoticed. He only missed two league
games in the 2004-05 campaign.
Now: Still with the club but features less
regularly now due to the impressive Seamus
Coleman. Scored his first ever Everton goal
in his testimonial game against AEK Athens
which prompted a pitch invasion at Goodison.
TONY
HIBBERT
Then: Watson was known for being a utility
man. Left the club at the end of the 2004-05
campaign after five seasons.
Now: Worked as part of Lee Clark’s coaching
staff at Huddersfield Town and Birmingham
City, where he was made assistant manager
in 2012. Turned down a position at Clark’s
latest club Blackpool due to his desire to
become a manager.
