2. Engineers, as practitioners of engineering, are professionals who invent,
Design, analyse, build and test machines, complex structures, gadgets and
materials to fulfil functional objectives and requirements while considering the
limitations imposed by practicality, regulation, safety and cost.
ENGINEER
WHAT IS ENGINEERING?
Engineering is art of Science which should be applied for the sake and
convenience of Humanity.
- Thomas Tredgold
Simple
Meaning
The word engineer (Latin ingeniator) is derived from the Latin words ingeniare ("to
contrive, devise") and ingenium ("cleverness")
3. WHAT THEN IS ENGINEERING?
• The central focus of the Engineering
profession is the application of
scientific knowledge to meet societal
needs.
• Engineering connects pure science
to society.
• Engineering therefore has a social
responsibility.
4. • India is estimated to beat China
by 2027 in population terms.
• However, majority of Indian population
is still in rural areas.
• To meet the challenges of increasing
population, use of technology is must.
Challenges ahead…
5. India stands 2nd after China for STEM graduates, reflecting the opportunity for India to
lead the world in technology in coming decades.
6. • The 21st century is defined by some of the huge
challenges now facing humanity.
• These are energy and food security, competition and
scarcity of natural resources, and climate change.
• The demand for engineering skills is likely to be higher
than ever before in order to deliver sustainable
engineering systems, low-carbon energy technologies,
and robust physical infrastructure to protect against
geophysical hazards such as sea-level rise and extreme
meteorological events.
ENGINEERING IS NOT A
STATIONARY PROFESSION....
7. Sir M. Visvesvaraya
He was a notable Indian engineer, scholar, statesman, and the
Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918. He was also awarded Bharat
Ratna, in 1955. Sir Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1861.
Engineer’s day is celebrated in his memory on 15th September .
Satish Dhawan
He is known as the father of experimental fluid dynamics
research in India. Dhawan was born in Srinagar on 25 September
1920.
To honour his works in rural education, remote sensing, and
satellite communications the satellite launch centre at
Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh was renamed the Satish Dhawan
Space Centre.
