PREPARATIONS FOR BRITISH CULTURE AND SOCIETY
1. The features of the United Kingdom's culture
The culture of the United Kingdom is rich and varied, and has been influential on culture on a worldwide scale.
It is a European state, and has many cultural links with its former colonies, particularly those that use the English language. The origins of the UK as a
political union of formerly independent states has resulted in the preservation of distinctive cultures in each of the home nations.
Britain's culture and creativity is flourishing as never before, whether in creative industries such as advertising, music and film, or in the visual and
performing arts.
Like the US, Britain is proud of its multicultural heritage and diversity....show more content...
Highways in Commonwealth countries generally begin with a N for national (e.g. N3) meaning they traverse the entire country or M for motorway
(e.g. M25) meaning they traverse only through or around a city (the M25 is a circular highway around London). Or R for route.
There is a very good reason behind the highway marking system in the USA. Highways marked "US" (i.e. the famous US 66), the lower numbers start
in the northeast and get higher as they move southwest. However, for highways marked Interstate (such as I–75 going from Michigan to Florida),
lower numbers start in the southwest, with road numbers getting higher as they go to the northwest. This was to help prevent confusion and
overlapping numbering, as the Interstate highway system was created after many "US–##" highways had been created
4. The approaches to deal with immigrant groups and their cultures
In dealing with immigrant groups and their cultures, there are essentially four approaches:
Monoculturalism: In some European states, culture is very closely linked to nationalism, thus government policy is to assimilate immigrants, although
recent increases in migration have led many European states to experiment with forms of multiculturalism.
Leitkultur (core culture): A model developed in Germany by Bassam Tibi. The idea is that minorities can have an identity of their own, but they should
at least support the core concepts of the culture

Culture, Culture And Culture Essay
Culture
Many times we hear concepts like 'Oriental culture', 'Italian culture' or 'Gothic Culture'. So we can understand and verify that it is an important
concept related to the idea of the society where we live in. Culture, in Sociology, is a concept developed during XVIII and XIX centuries that has had
various definitions.
One exhaustive definition is in Browne (2015, p. 31):
"Culture refers to the language, beliefs, values and norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills, and all the other things that people learn
that make up the 'way of life' of any society"
So when we use the expression 'Italian culture' we know that we are talking about the entire set of believes, knowledge and the whole way of life that
characterise Italian people. Something connected to their country but that is with them wherever they go. If they are born in Italy or within an Italian
group of people they will speak Italian, they will eat traditional Italian food when they are home, they will be probably Catholic etc.
While many concepts inside Browne definition are familiar and easy to identify like language and diet, three of them need a proper explanation for a
better understanding of them.
Values, Norms, Roles
What are 'values'?
The word 'values' is often used in our daily language. When we listen to someone that is talking about her or his values we understand that that person
is talking about something that marks out what characterize her/his own concept of 'what is important,

Definition of Culture Essay
With a diverse population existing in the United States today, our country is a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect.
Culture, distinguishing one societal group from another, includes beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and
economic systems. Through lifelong and ever changing processes of learning, creativity, and sharing, culture shapes our patterns of behavior and
thinking. A culture?s significance is so profound that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. ?Culture becomes the lens through which
we perceive and evaluate what is going on around us? (Henslin, 1993).

Her accent and the non–visible facial expressions create a barrier for comprehending the communication. Later, as the service for the woman
progresses, her beliefs, values, and norms of her culture are dispelled. For example, in order for the woman to show her face to another male in public,
she must first request permission from her husband to unveil. During further discussion, it becomes even more apparent, that this Iranian woman is
subservient and possesses a lower level of status than that of Iranian males. All of these characteristics are indicative of this woman?s culture.
As conveyed in the above description, the characteristics represent the unique symbols of one?s culture. Symbols, in representative form of
communication, art, expressions, materials, and so on, allow a cultural group to develop complex thoughts and to exchange those thoughts with each
other. Through the exchanging of symbols, one?s cultural ideas, beliefs, and values, are passed on from one generation to the next.
People are not born with culture; they have to learn it. Throughout the development of the entire life span, culture is learned from the society in which
we live. Furthermore, in the diverse population of the United States, ethnic groups or societies will have to interact with other groups outside the
realm of their individual self. In order to do so, it is necessary for the societies to exchange languages, ideas, or even,

Essay about Cultural Experience
English 1130
Fall 2012
Cultural Diversity Assignment I didn't know where I should go to visit for my culture experience paper. I am neither into a play or temple, but I
absolutely love food, all kinds of food. I think meals and restaurants are a great way to experience a different culture. The problem was what kind of
food I should try and won't be too disappointed? So I called my brother who has numerous experiences in food. He told me that I should try a
Greek food and there is a Greek restaurant in uptown called It's Greek to me, it is a nice place to go and offers delicious authentic Greek food. I was
attempting and exciting. Therefore, I decided to try Greek food for my culture experience. Next following day, my boyfriend...show more content...
They all looked amazing and delicious, I had to stop and take some pictures. My dish Beef Kebob had four juicy steak nuggets, and a moist

potatoes. I took a first bite of potatoes and it tasted so sour. I didn't like much but I didn't get bother by it. As soon as I took the first bite of my
steak nuggets, all the sour potatoes thoughts were disappeared and I felt so happy chewing on the steak. It was so tender and delicious. My
boyfriend's dish also looked amazing, he really loved it. I didn't try because I don't like the taste of lamb. Soon after we both cleaned out the plate
and left no room for desserts. We had to promise each other that we would come back again next time. After that, I called my brother and thank
him for the wonderful suggestion. He told me little bit about Greek culture on food. He said his Greek friend told him that food is very important
in Greek, Greek people take food very seriously. Family loves to come together and cook for a nice meal, enjoy the food, laugh and have fun
together. I don't know much about Greek culture, but I guess I am interested in it now because this experience. One thing I notice that Greek food is
amazing and they do really appreciate the food and create amazing dishes. I am glad that I chose Greek restaurant for this cultural

What I Have Learned About Culture
My Reflection
What I Have Learned About Culture
Global Marketing was a fundamental educational component for my overall understanding of how culture affects a business. A major way in which
this class has affected my thought process, is that today, I put much more emphasis on the importance of culture. I have noticed this change in my work
for other courses as well, in the sense that I consider whether business decisions make sense from a cultural aspect. I also found it insightful to discover
that I cannot only apply this to cultures in respect to countries, but also when speaking of corporate cultures and cultures related to specific industries,
such as food culture or beauty culture.
I have learnt that it is all about finding the right balance between standardization and adaptation and that ignoring either is detrimental to a business'
success. I believe that this balance between standardization and adaptation does not only apply to marketing in the business world, but also to how
I choose to present myself as a person. I have come to see that as a person, and particularly as an international student, there will be countless of
situations in which I will need to adapt to the people I am working with in order to facilitate effective teamwork. On the other hand, I recognize that
as much as I may adapt, my value system is something that is so deeply ingrained, that it will always be a part of how I standardize my identity. Just
like how a business can gain scalability

Essay My Personal Culture
Culture defines people's values, beliefs, and personal interests. Culture is important because it allows people to maintain a unique identity society.
Many cultures have common interests, while others may have customs that differ greatly from that of another. Technology has had a huge impact on
present day cultures. Many culture have been altered including my own, and some have been created due to the rise of technology. Cultures differ so
greatly that someone belonging to one culture may not agree with the values of another, which then causes social and ethical issues. My culture shares
many similarities with others around the world; most of which have connected more people in recent years than ever before. Cultural gaps, and lack of

identity, and I can make choices for my best interest, and not for the majority.
In spite of their differences, both African and African–American culture have been able to connect in certain ways in recent years, as well as other
cultures. Technology, specifically social media has allowed my generation to connect with one another even with our cultural differences. There is a
chemistry that exists within my generation that my parent's generation never could have imagined was possible. The International Association of
Business Communicators says "At its core, social media are about sharing information across boundaries. We can now find out what we want from
whomever we want. Social media is breaking down hierarchical, regional, age and cultural boundaries" (IABC). Things have changed socially, through
digital means, and it's a big part of what makes me and my generation unique. Today, people in the United States can interact and communicate with

What is Culture? Essay examples
The first definition of 'culture' by Oxford's Dictionary is 'art, literature, music and other intellectual expressions of a particular society or time'
("Culture," Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English). Anthropologist of culture, Raymond Williams argued that the term 'culture'
was first used in reference to the cultivation of crops which was later associated in relation to the cultivation of the human mind, hence the expression
'cultured/cultivated person'. The noun of process thenceforth grew into a noun of configuration in the later 18th century where culture meant 'the
generalisation of the 'spirit' which informed the 'whole way of life' of a distinct people' (Williams, 1981) implying a common 'way of life' shared...show

Marx, as cited in Chris Barker's Cultural Studies – Theory and Practice, argued that human beings main concern is to produce their means of survival,
i.e. food and clothes, through labour consequently creating themselves. He further argued that in the capitalist society, culture equals power as the
bourgeoisies – those own the economic means and relations of production, controls the cultural production, the distribution mechanisms of cultural
products and the cultural structure of a society – i.e. art, culture and politics. Economic determinism although is not autonomous, is essential to the
understanding of culture where the structure and meaning of a specific cultural product is determined by the profit–driven motive and class relations
where it examines the cultural trend in terms of their 'own rules, logics, development and affectivity' (Barker, 2009: 56). Marx predicted that with the
arrival of capitalism, consequently comes the fall of it as the conflict of class will drive the proletariats, the labourers, to overthrow capitalism through
organizations of defence, trade unions and political parties thus replacing it with a class–less society, and common ownership and unbiased allotment of
products. Marx, together with Frederick Engels, argued that the ideas instilled in the proletariat's mind are only the ideas of the ruling class driven by
materialistic conditions. These

The Differences Of Culture And Culture Essay
The Differences of Culture
Culture is part of each of us; its characteristics are defined by a combination of multiple conditions such as language, religion, places, people, lifestyle,
etc. People in different societies have different cultures, sometimes they can be significantly different, but they can also have similarities. We are all
surrounded by people of different backgrounds, religion and culture. This expands our knowledge and by being surrounded of different cultures, it let
us to think with an open mind accepting our differences, but also celebrating our similarities. Some of us might have a greater knowledge in this
subject; some of us have live between a mix of cultures. People that have emigrated from a different country know how different cultures can be. I
believe every one of us at some point have seen the differences of cultures, some might know little about them, but at least everyone can be identified
with their own culture. To know who we are and what our culture represents is important, it is also important to expand our knowledge in cultures
from people that surround us because we are in a diverse world where millions of people live differently and it might surprise us how different but also
how similar we all are.
Culture is powerful; it can shape our perceptions, attributions, judgment, and ideas of our self and of others. It is one of the most important attributes
in our lives. We carry this since a very young age; we look up to our parents, our

What is my culture? Do I even have one? I've asked myself these questions about a million times. In the essay Ethnic Hash, it says, "What were the

We have a good system. It is the highlight of my week, we get to catch up with my grandparents while eating delicious food. My mawmaw makes
something special for every occasion; peach cobbler for my pawpaw's birthday, satin pie for my dad's birthday, and shrimp jambalaya when my
aunts come into town. The food my grandmother cooks represents a part of my culture because it represents the time spent with my grandparents
and who they are. And being with my grandparents has definitely influenced who I am. Another part of my culture can be shown through the foods
my dad makes. My dad also really likes to cook, especially grill. He cooks great steaks, makes drunk chicken, and killer burgers. My dad also likes
to work with seafood, he always cooks something good for my aunts when they come into town. Louisiana has the best seafood, hands down. Just
take my word for it. So my aunts that live in Texas don't get to eat good seafood except for when they visit. My dad likes to make something
yummy for them that they don't normally get to eat. He makes grilled and fried fish and shrimp fettuccine, which is cheesy noodles and shrimp, it's
wonderful. Every Sunday night we eat dinner with my grandparents; because my mawmaw and pawpaw cook breakfast on Sunday mornings, we

A consumerist society is a group of people who put a lot of time, energy and thought into consuming material goods. The media plays an essential role
in this. In America, people are constantly consuming advertisements persuading them to consume materialistic goods. Children aged 2–11 consumes

population is becoming more and more diverse, the need to possess good communication skills has increased. Therefore, one must acknowledge the
ways to communicate effectively with different cultures, without abandoning his/her own native culture.
First of all, to be able to communicate effectively with others, people must comprehend cultural differences. Nowadays, people meet each other through

First of all, one must be genuinely interested in other cultures. They must learn about their food, traditions, and ethical values. In this way, they must
acknowledge that their own native culture does not contain universal truths about people's way of living.
Similarly, to furthermore contribute in intercultural communication and collaboration, people must participate in other cultures. This will help them to
truly comprehend the values of a certain culture. They can participate in other cultures by learning their language, tasting their food, attending events
and other similar activities. This is learning by experience which in most cases is more valuable than just theoretical learning.
Moreover, although all these factors are influential in effective communication there is another very important factor to bear in mind, namely, your
own culture. As people learn more and more about new cultures, they try to adapt to them. Often they might find themselves emerging in new cultures
and begin disregarding their own unique culture. However, people should always strive to promote intercultural communication by representing their

My Culture, Values, And Beliefs
Values and beliefs are what every living human being possesses, whether we are conscious about it or not. They impact how we live through day by
day, how we make decisions and interact with society. We possess these values and beliefs commonly from our parents, friends and others who are
close to us as we continue to grow and learn. Some of the values and beliefs that I find are more important to me are family, respect, ethnicity and
openness. Family is what I value the most, they are always there for me through good and bad times. They are my support source and I can always
count on them for when I am troubled. I unquestionably inherited this value from my parents as well as my culture (Filipino), for it is known to be
very family orientated and to the very extent, loyal. My parents are my first teachers, teaching me what is acceptable and what is not, how the world

words, all persons unconsciously, and sometimes consciously, reflect and imitate their environment and the things that they see. Every culture has their
own individual stereotypes and belief systems. The reason for this is that people place arbitrary meanings on life's occurrences based upon those of the

They also study the way the members of a group respond to one another and to other groups. The sociological perspective is based on the
assumption that for a given collectively there is a collective reality that can be studied in it's own right. Various cultures develop their own cultural
practices based on the traditions of their predecessors. In these societies, standards of behavior are passed on from one generation to the next.
Because of this, these various cultures all carry and practice unique ideologies. The ideologies are developed by socialization. Socialization is the
complex process by which individuals come to learn and perform behavior expected of them by society. Socialization teaches habits, ideas,
attitudes, and values. This is one of the principle ways by which society preserve themselves. Learning plays an important part in socialization. A
person must acquire a wide range of information and skills to participate in the activities of a family, a play group, a school group, a business, or a

and what to value in human relations. This process varies with different cultural and ethnic

Various societies and ethnic groups recognize different illnesses, symptoms, and causes. Each group develops different treatments and health care
strategies, which can be passed on and applied in different cultures.
Cultures can't always stay the same; therefore, they undergo a process called adaptation. The process of adaptation refers to an organism coping with
the environmental forces and stressors. Animals use biological means of adaptation, but humans are unique in also having a means of cultural
adaptation. As cultural anthropologist study human history the importance of adaptation has been revealed. Humans have formulated ways of coping
with the range of environments they have occupied in time and space. An example of the adaptation is the coping with the spread of industrial
production, which has strongly affected human life. Each economic revolution has social and cultural consequences.
Complete cultural fluency in more than one culture is possible, however it is a long process. A person can become fluent in two languages through
memorization and practice, however the process to become fluent in two cultures in much more intricate. The only way a person can become
culturally fluent is to be exposed and involved in the cultural for a prolonged amount of time. A person must put aside their own culture and be able to
experience what people do, what people know, and the things people make and use, in order

British Culture And Society

  • 1. British Culture and Society r PREPARATIONS FOR BRITISH CULTURE AND SOCIETY 1. The features of the United Kingdom's culture The culture of the United Kingdom is rich and varied, and has been influential on culture on a worldwide scale. It is a European state, and has many cultural links with its former colonies, particularly those that use the English language. The origins of the UK as a political union of formerly independent states has resulted in the preservation of distinctive cultures in each of the home nations. Britain's culture and creativity is flourishing as never before, whether in creative industries such as advertising, music and film, or in the visual and performing arts. Like the US, Britain is proud of its multicultural heritage and diversity....show more content... Highways in Commonwealth countries generally begin with a N for national (e.g. N3) meaning they traverse the entire country or M for motorway (e.g. M25) meaning they traverse only through or around a city (the M25 is a circular highway around London). Or R for route. There is a very good reason behind the highway marking system in the USA. Highways marked "US" (i.e. the famous US 66), the lower numbers start in the northeast and get higher as they move southwest. However, for highways marked Interstate (such as I–75 going from Michigan to Florida), lower numbers start in the southwest, with road numbers getting higher as they go to the northwest. This was to help prevent confusion and overlapping numbering, as the Interstate highway system was created after many "US–##" highways had been created 4. The approaches to deal with immigrant groups and their cultures In dealing with immigrant groups and their cultures, there are essentially four approaches: Monoculturalism: In some European states, culture is very closely linked to nationalism, thus government policy is to assimilate immigrants, although recent increases in migration have led many European states to experiment with forms of multiculturalism. Leitkultur (core culture): A model developed in Germany by Bassam Tibi. The idea is that minorities can have an identity of their own, but they should at least support the core concepts of the culture

  • 3. Culture, Culture And Culture Essay Culture Many times we hear concepts like 'Oriental culture', 'Italian culture' or 'Gothic Culture'. So we can understand and verify that it is an important concept related to the idea of the society where we live in. Culture, in Sociology, is a concept developed during XVIII and XIX centuries that has had various definitions. One exhaustive definition is in Browne (2015, p. 31): "Culture refers to the language, beliefs, values and norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills, and all the other things that people learn that make up the 'way of life' of any society" So when we use the expression 'Italian culture' we know that we are talking about the entire set of believes, knowledge and the whole way of life that characterise Italian people. Something connected to their country but that is with them wherever they go. If they are born in Italy or within an Italian group of people they will speak Italian, they will eat traditional Italian food when they are home, they will be probably Catholic etc. While many concepts inside Browne definition are familiar and easy to identify like language and diet, three of them need a proper explanation for a better understanding of them. Values, Norms, Roles What are 'values'? The word 'values' is often used in our daily language. When we listen to someone that is talking about her or his values we understand that that person is talking about something that marks out what characterize her/his own concept of 'what is important, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Definition of Culture Essay With a diverse population existing in the United States today, our country is a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect. Culture, distinguishing one societal group from another, includes beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and economic systems. Through lifelong and ever changing processes of learning, creativity, and sharing, culture shapes our patterns of behavior and thinking. A culture?s significance is so profound that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. ?Culture becomes the lens through which we perceive and evaluate what is going on around us? (Henslin, 1993). Trying to define the complex term of culture with varying...show more content... Her accent and the non–visible facial expressions create a barrier for comprehending the communication. Later, as the service for the woman progresses, her beliefs, values, and norms of her culture are dispelled. For example, in order for the woman to show her face to another male in public, she must first request permission from her husband to unveil. During further discussion, it becomes even more apparent, that this Iranian woman is subservient and possesses a lower level of status than that of Iranian males. All of these characteristics are indicative of this woman?s culture. As conveyed in the above description, the characteristics represent the unique symbols of one?s culture. Symbols, in representative form of communication, art, expressions, materials, and so on, allow a cultural group to develop complex thoughts and to exchange those thoughts with each other. Through the exchanging of symbols, one?s cultural ideas, beliefs, and values, are passed on from one generation to the next. People are not born with culture; they have to learn it. Throughout the development of the entire life span, culture is learned from the society in which we live. Furthermore, in the diverse population of the United States, ethnic groups or societies will have to interact with other groups outside the realm of their individual self. In order to do so, it is necessary for the societies to exchange languages, ideas, or even, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay about Cultural Experience English 1130 Fall 2012 Cultural Diversity Assignment I didn't know where I should go to visit for my culture experience paper. I am neither into a play or temple, but I absolutely love food, all kinds of food. I think meals and restaurants are a great way to experience a different culture. The problem was what kind of food I should try and won't be too disappointed? So I called my brother who has numerous experiences in food. He told me that I should try a Greek food and there is a Greek restaurant in uptown called It's Greek to me, it is a nice place to go and offers delicious authentic Greek food. I was attempting and exciting. Therefore, I decided to try Greek food for my culture experience. Next following day, my boyfriend...show more content... They all looked amazing and delicious, I had to stop and take some pictures. My dish Beef Kebob had four juicy steak nuggets, and a moist medium–rare with flavors you won't find anywhere with some onion and pepper in between them. Couple this with vegetables and home–style potatoes. I took a first bite of potatoes and it tasted so sour. I didn't like much but I didn't get bother by it. As soon as I took the first bite of my steak nuggets, all the sour potatoes thoughts were disappeared and I felt so happy chewing on the steak. It was so tender and delicious. My boyfriend's dish also looked amazing, he really loved it. I didn't try because I don't like the taste of lamb. Soon after we both cleaned out the plate and left no room for desserts. We had to promise each other that we would come back again next time. After that, I called my brother and thank him for the wonderful suggestion. He told me little bit about Greek culture on food. He said his Greek friend told him that food is very important in Greek, Greek people take food very seriously. Family loves to come together and cook for a nice meal, enjoy the food, laugh and have fun together. I don't know much about Greek culture, but I guess I am interested in it now because this experience. One thing I notice that Greek food is amazing and they do really appreciate the food and create amazing dishes. I am glad that I chose Greek restaurant for this cultural Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. What I Have Learned About Culture My Reflection What I Have Learned About Culture Global Marketing was a fundamental educational component for my overall understanding of how culture affects a business. A major way in which this class has affected my thought process, is that today, I put much more emphasis on the importance of culture. I have noticed this change in my work for other courses as well, in the sense that I consider whether business decisions make sense from a cultural aspect. I also found it insightful to discover that I cannot only apply this to cultures in respect to countries, but also when speaking of corporate cultures and cultures related to specific industries, such as food culture or beauty culture. I have learnt that it is all about finding the right balance between standardization and adaptation and that ignoring either is detrimental to a business' success. I believe that this balance between standardization and adaptation does not only apply to marketing in the business world, but also to how I choose to present myself as a person. I have come to see that as a person, and particularly as an international student, there will be countless of situations in which I will need to adapt to the people I am working with in order to facilitate effective teamwork. On the other hand, I recognize that as much as I may adapt, my value system is something that is so deeply ingrained, that it will always be a part of how I standardize my identity. Just like how a business can gain scalability Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Essay My Personal Culture Culture defines people's values, beliefs, and personal interests. Culture is important because it allows people to maintain a unique identity society. Many cultures have common interests, while others may have customs that differ greatly from that of another. Technology has had a huge impact on present day cultures. Many culture have been altered including my own, and some have been created due to the rise of technology. Cultures differ so greatly that someone belonging to one culture may not agree with the values of another, which then causes social and ethical issues. My culture shares many similarities with others around the world; most of which have connected more people in recent years than ever before. Cultural gaps, and lack of ...show more content... In the past, things were primarily about skin color, and issues regarding people of a particular skin color were handled by such, and not ethnicity.Black people were black people, whites were whites, and so on. The point is that by distinguishing myself from a general role, I am able to have my own identity, and I can make choices for my best interest, and not for the majority. In spite of their differences, both African and African–American culture have been able to connect in certain ways in recent years, as well as other cultures. Technology, specifically social media has allowed my generation to connect with one another even with our cultural differences. There is a chemistry that exists within my generation that my parent's generation never could have imagined was possible. The International Association of Business Communicators says "At its core, social media are about sharing information across boundaries. We can now find out what we want from whomever we want. Social media is breaking down hierarchical, regional, age and cultural boundaries" (IABC). Things have changed socially, through digital means, and it's a big part of what makes me and my generation unique. Today, people in the United States can interact and communicate with people from anywhere around the world. I listened to some weird electronic music from France one night and it is amazing that I can do that. The internet has Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. What is Culture? Essay examples The first definition of 'culture' by Oxford's Dictionary is 'art, literature, music and other intellectual expressions of a particular society or time' ("Culture," Oxford's Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English). Anthropologist of culture, Raymond Williams argued that the term 'culture' was first used in reference to the cultivation of crops which was later associated in relation to the cultivation of the human mind, hence the expression 'cultured/cultivated person'. The noun of process thenceforth grew into a noun of configuration in the later 18th century where culture meant 'the generalisation of the 'spirit' which informed the 'whole way of life' of a distinct people' (Williams, 1981) implying a common 'way of life' shared...show more content... Marx, as cited in Chris Barker's Cultural Studies – Theory and Practice, argued that human beings main concern is to produce their means of survival, i.e. food and clothes, through labour consequently creating themselves. He further argued that in the capitalist society, culture equals power as the bourgeoisies – those own the economic means and relations of production, controls the cultural production, the distribution mechanisms of cultural products and the cultural structure of a society – i.e. art, culture and politics. Economic determinism although is not autonomous, is essential to the understanding of culture where the structure and meaning of a specific cultural product is determined by the profit–driven motive and class relations where it examines the cultural trend in terms of their 'own rules, logics, development and affectivity' (Barker, 2009: 56). Marx predicted that with the arrival of capitalism, consequently comes the fall of it as the conflict of class will drive the proletariats, the labourers, to overthrow capitalism through organizations of defence, trade unions and political parties thus replacing it with a class–less society, and common ownership and unbiased allotment of products. Marx, together with Frederick Engels, argued that the ideas instilled in the proletariat's mind are only the ideas of the ruling class driven by materialistic conditions. The food my grandmother cooks represents a part of my culture because it represents the time spent with my grandparents and who they are. And being with my grandparents has definitely influenced who I am. Another part of my culture can be shown through the foods my dad makes. My dad also really likes to cook, especially grill. He cooks great steaks, makes drunk chicken, and killer burgers. My dad also likes to work with seafood, he always cooks something good for my aunts when they come into town. Louisiana has the best seafood, hands down. Just take my word for it. So my aunts that live in Texas don't get to eat good seafood except for when they visit. My dad likes to make something yummy for them that they don't normally get to eat. He makes grilled and fried fish and shrimp fettuccine, which is cheesy noodles and shrimp, it's wonderful. Every Sunday night we eat dinner with my grandparents; because my mawmaw and pawpaw cook breakfast on Sunday mornings, we usually cook dinner. And by we, I mean my dad.
