My Reading Experience
I grew up in a household where knowledge is everything, and I received a solid foundation in the reading and writing basics from the time I was
three years old. The biggest motivator I had during my reading experience was my mother. My mom played a humongous role in teaching me the
necessary materials to use on my reading journey. Her main goal was making sure that I became exposed to the concepts of reading and writing
before I entered school. Although reading and writing were taught in my early school years, my knowledge base and love of these subject areas
comes from my mother. Thus, I credit my mother with teaching me to read and write. My mom has always been an ardent reader and she loves
everything about words. Growing up, she instilled the value of the power behind knowledge into my siblings and me early on. While I was still
in the womb, she read to me daily. Later, as a small child, she read me bedtime stories and taught me how to read them back to her. I struggled with
pacing and volume when I began learning how to read. Consequently, my mother made me read more to improve my problem. The more I read, the
more I began to fall in love with the way a book sounds rather than its composition. Through this newfound passion I began to approach reading like a
challenge: the bigger the book, the better. My house was stocked with classics like Jane Eyre, Pretty Women, and Dracula. My love for reading
developed from these stories which later shaped my favorite

My Personal Experience of Reading
C. S. Lewis once said "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me", which is extremely similar to my personal
outlook. Novels have given me an extensive amount of rewards over the years. The knowledge reading has given me has been extensive;
additionally, literature has been nothing but a boon to me. I have always considered myself a rather advanced reader, and having the skill of
advanced comprehension while reading has been an extremely useful tool that I continue to utilize. As I write, I use the countless hours of
experience reading to create an insightful and logical paper. For as long as I have been able to read, I can always remember being much more
enamored with what I would find in the library or at home much more so than that of what was given to us during class. Books from class would
simply make me want to fall asleep, meanwhile the books I would find for myself would create a door into another world unlike any that I had seen.
Due to books giving me a friend, gifting me with an improved attention to detail, and a superior (and sometimes odd) vocabulary, reading has
improved my life by a large margin.
Books have been an extensive aid to me during my years in elementary and middle school. Moreover, without the aid of literature, my life at that time
would have been extremely lonely and uneventful; due to my lack of friends at the time, books acted as a sort of placeholder. My taste in literature
began with autobiographies, and then expanded to almost anything I could get my hands on. At night, I would read novels by book–light before I
would go to bed. For my adolescent mind, literature took me to a fantasy world where anything was possible. Adventures were simply a page away,
and the size and scope of fantasy books took me to far reaching places of which I will never see with my own eyes. Although I appreciated these
books very much, I do not believe my teachers did as much. I have many memories of having my books taken away because I was reading during
class Fortunately, this was not always the case, but reading had a massive impact on my childhood this way. Additionally, Elementary school was my

Reflection About Writing And Reading
Growing up I was never the best writer or reader. Every time I read a certain book for school, I tend to just read past the lines and not know what I
just read. Some material would be interesting but never caught my attention to the point that attracted my interests. Writing was extremely difficult
since it takes a lot of patience and exact wording that I need to use to make my essay come out clean. Plenty of ideas would come up when I am
writing my paper, however I just don't know how to get it all down on the piece of paper. My mind would go off tangent to think about the ideas that
I wrote before on the paper and then I will try to include those ideas into my paper. This causes a negative flow throughout my essay and results of the

This method was very tedious and boring for me but I knew doing this would improve my grade on my homework. The hours I spent on the
reading and writing the notes took me almost a few hours. I needed to get every detail down in order to get the most description out of the book so
that can help me respond to the questionnaire. After the struggle of one night of reading for this course, I turned in my homework and I felt proud
of myself. Two positive outcomes came out of this change of style towards my literacy skills was that I understood the readings so much better
and I received a ten out of ten on the homework. I really worked hard for this homework grade since the percentage of homework was almost half
of the entire grade. This continued for me for the rest of the semester and the readings got so much easier to read since I was more aware of what
was going on and that made me want to do homework even more. In the end of the semester, I was proud to say that I passed this course where it
required me to more readings than I have done in my lifetime. This experience with my literacy skills really awakened me. I felt I need some type of
incentive so I can perform and improve my reading and writing. I taught myself to study and read well through this course and I ended up graduating
which was a wonderful experience. Today, I still use the same

Essay On Reading And Reading
Throughout my life, I have had many experiences that revolve around reading and writing. In the beginning, my parents waited until kindergarten to
start me on my reading journey. They experienced my siblings through their elementary years; they became bored easily because they already knew
how to read, so they did not overly teach me before I started school. Luckily, that benefited me greatly. I grew to love education and rose to the top tier
of learning in the class. Unfortunately, I do not remember much of my early literacy achievements, but there is one memory that stuck with me. I can
still remember when I found out the impact reading and writing can have on the growth of an individual. During the summer after my sixth grade
year, my family went to Disney World. Before we packed I had my mom help me pick out books to read during the vacation. She gave me onebook in
particular that she thought I would love. As a bibliophile, she knew how to research the best book for a light read–at least I thought she did. After

The book had been published earlier that year and it did not have its popularity yet. She explained to me that not every book could end with
happiness. Some books needed to have realistic or saddening endings. I had her leave and I sat alone in my room. I needed time to process what I
had just read. Through the rest of the trip, I could feel the impact that The Fault in Our Stars had on me. I could not stop thinking about how it was
different from the books I had read previously. I realized that there were multiple types of books that I had never pursued before, which allowed me
to experience something special. I started to read books that did not have a guaranteed pleasant ending. My writing skills increased because I was
able to realize what was real and what was pure fantasy. The Fault in Our Stars allowed me to recognize a variety of

Rick Riordan once said, "The images from the book you make in your head are always going to be the best images." It was in these words that I
started reading books at a young age. When I was growing up as a kid in elementary school, I did not have a huge interest in reading or writing, that is,
until I met my fourth–grade teacher. When I met Ms. Deemer, my perspective onreading and writing changed as she introduced me to books that were
in my pool of interests and gave me tips on writing, resulting in a change of how I looked at reading and writing.
Unfortunately, I struggled to read a bit, and this resulted because of my tendency to skim through words while reading, giving me a hard time

I also think that if the book that I would have to read or if the subject I am writing on is appealing to me, then I think I would be more dedicated to
reading it, instead of unwillingly do it.
At this point, I was at the peak of my writing and reading skills. I was soon offered opportunities or advantages from my hard work. For example,
my teachers started to congratulate me for my writing on my essays and I was given chances to enter for contests that no one else was given. All of
this came with some cons although. Now, I had friends or classmates coming to me for help when I needed to also work on my assignments, which
was a huge pain.
Additionally, I was bilingual, speaking Vietnamese and English, which helped my in reading Vietnamese and translating it for others, which has
proved to be very useful. As a result, I started to take classes to improve on my Vietnamese and started to learn Spanish. Knowing that these languages
would help me with my future and choices in life, I decided to not let these opportunities to slip by and grab them.
From here on, every time when I would read or write, it felt like an instant, where I just opened my book and closed it or if I picked up a pencil and
magically finished writing in a moment. Books were my past time for entertainment and writing was a way to release my ideas onto paper and not
forget them. As a result, my perspective changed on reading and

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than
anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words
creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated
pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next
book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I
believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few
different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading
assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the
genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter
book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and
look up any words we didn't know. This was

America, a country created by the outcasts of Europe in the 1700's, is a nation that consists of a diversity not known by any other country. Since
the first settlers travelled to this new nation, people from all over the world have come to this great country for many different reasons. Some
people come to make a better life for their families, some people come to experience freedom, some have come to stay alive and avoid genocide of
their own nation, in the past some have even been forced to come to America with their lives being changed forever. In schools today, we learn about

I was an outcast because I had come from another culture that these girls didn't quite understand. If they had been taught about different cultures in
their schools before college they would have been able to have a better understanding of where I came from which would have helped them not to
judge me so quickly. There are many ways a teacher can incorporate multicultural literature into a classroom. One of the more popular forms of
incorporating outside reading is through book clubs or literature circles. In literature circles the teacher brings in about four or five copies of four
or five different books. Before beginning to read the books, the teacher will give a brief description of each book to the class (Tompkins). It is
usually best if the teacher has already read each book so they can give a better overview of the book. After the students have had a chance to learn a
little about each book they will then choose their book, as well as other members for their group. Some teachers may make exceptions to the amount
of choices the students have, but the students should be given as much freedom as possible. Most times the books will each tell a story from the
perspective of someone from a different culture. The cultures represented may be the same cultures displayed in the classroom or different cultures. All
the books however, usually share a

Books vs Ebooks Essay
Now days with the rise of digital technology many physical items such as pen and paper are slowly being replaced by computers and smart phones.
But is this really a good thing? I read books and of course so do many other people in this class and around the globe. But since the creation of
'e–readers' more and more people have been converting to the technology based side of reading. Although technology is slowly becoming more
predominant in this era we should not rely on it to always entertain and keep us occupied.
I think 'real, physical' books are better than e–books because you can truly own a book. As Mortimer J. Adler, a popular author, says, 'Full ownership

Of course that's not strictly true–you can loan your book by loaning your reading device, but that's like giving someone access to one of your books by
loaning them an entire library, book cases and all.
And books are a tactile experience, meaning they are supposed to be experienced through touch and smell (especially for the old books). A book is
meant to be an experience that can have depressions and elevations on the cover and text, feeling the weight of the pages as you turn them and all of
these elements when combined make a book what it is, but when you read an e–book you are exposed to digitized text and a screen. And it's been
proven that when people are exposed to screens of TVs or computers they are less likely to have a good night sleep. On a web poll about e–books vs.
books one person commented, 'I've tried reading a few e–books but I've always given up. I just don't like looking at digitized text when I'm reading a
novel. I like the feel, the weight and even the smell of books,' many of the following comments made by others agreed with this persons thoughts.
A book is a single–task item that is written to distract the reader from everything else happening around them, they are technology designed for the best
possible reading experience. An e–reader, however, tends to be a multi–tasking item with the ability to play music and videos as well as hold books.

Personal Narrative– My Love of Reading and Writing
Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre–elementary to college, I've managed to sharpen both skills to
my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many
different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have
nothing else in the future, I'll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my

Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't too unlike the scripts of computer games or the
own stories I came up with on my own, but books actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading
things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one book about a shoplifter who had to do community
service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction: Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let
my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of
course, my teachers encouraged me to keep reading, as long as I wasn't doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn't because of
their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept
reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure
what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it. All eighth graders had to take a career class to determine what we wanted to be when
we grew up. I remember telling my teacher that I wanted to be an archaeologist and the strange look she

Why Should I Read? Essay
Why Should I Read?
"Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history
and you read it in your own terms."
Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author.
Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch
watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until
I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how

With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts
in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice.
Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World
War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice.
Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to
believe anything is possible.
In 1966
Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned
no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age
children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and
homes of children most at risk of educational failure.
Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so
much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of
telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for
an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show

There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance,
or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one
for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure,
reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and
loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple
motive of escape and of "killing" time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading
broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created
by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man".
Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

Reading–Is It Important?
Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading
really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is
no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. It
comes natural to a human being in the 21st century. In Rick Moody's piece "The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading" he is arguing that there is no right or

We were all created differently which means we all look at things with a different viewpoint. There should never be a limitation on reading, we
have the freedom as human beings to interpret something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really
examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take you into the story and get you to really use your
imagination, there can be no limitations when it comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the
absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later
in the essay he said "I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of
literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up to the imagination and the reader should have
complete control on how he or she looks at the book they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea
that there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really realize how seriously people take the topic of
reading and how many different opinions there are on the issue. Reading is something we do so naturally just like breathing or walking. Moody

Reading
Introduction
Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although
reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words,
phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This
interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content...
The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main
ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It
allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give
the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material.
Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks
nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to
discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to
apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading
can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very
important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I

My Experience Of Reading
While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story my teachers would give me. As I was reading
through the passages they would give me, I noticed that while I read a story it wouldn't stick to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be
difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head. There were times where the teacher would have the students and I take mini
quizzes and I would hardly understand on what the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much
knowledge in reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't have many experience in reading. Therefore, half of
sixth grade my teacher whom was named Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made reading easier for me as the semester went by. I
had told her I was having difficulties in reading and she gladly helped me out. Every time I needed help with a problem from the story she was
gladly there to help me. For example, the many things she would help me out with was having to stay after school for about an hour reading poems,
articles and short passages from books she would give me. She also had me read magazine pages every three times a week to better my
understanding of what I'm reading. I then was told that it would be a good opportunity to come in on Saturdays for reading to better my knowledge in
what I'm reading. With all the help from my sixth–grade teacher

My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book
reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people
tend to misunderstand my point if it is written.
When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to think about several things at once. Clearing my mind
and focusing on the writing task is a challenge in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it will
be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening
for me. I assume I am being overly critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what was my
wonderful work of mental art.
The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a
few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading of
work. My Vice President is an attorney and English major with a keen ability to find the minutest errors. I try to take any criticism

Reflection About Reading And Writing
From the point when I was a little girl to now, I have changed my ways of thinking about reading and writing a lot. I remember back in kindergarten
I was put in a program called ESOL, I absolutely hated it; I felt stupid because I was one of few kids that went there from my class. I was later to
learn that it was because I didn't speak English. In that program they would pull us out of class to help us with reading and writing, and the
clearest memory I have is being sat at a table with the teacher and not really wanting to read and her forcing me to sound out every word and follow
along with my finger. This early on in my life I did not enjoy reading, I thought it was boring and there was no point to it. This continued until I got
removed from ESOL in third grade. That was when I picked up a book I actually enjoyed, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, I automatically fell
in love with it. This was the turning point for my way of seeing reading and writing. By the time I was in fifth grade I was one of the kids you would
call a nerd, because I always had a book with me, I don't really remember many of the books I did read though. Everyday when I got home I would
plop down on the couch and start reading. I wouldn't do homework just because I was reading. My mom would get so annoyed with me she would
say, "get off that couch and get your face out of that book! Do something else for a change!" I remember in earlier years she would beg me to pick up a

One can describe reading with a plethora of words, good and bad; many people enjoy reading as well. At an early age, I knew I was not one of
these people. I would not say I despised reading, however, I could not grasp the importance of reading and how it could be beneficial to me and my
growth. Not only were my teachers enforcing this upon me, but my parents as well. The passages and scriptures that I had to read in class were
not the problem, but when the hours invested in reading interfered with my after school free time the dilemma occurred. I had no passion in
becoming an author or journalist, why must I sacrifice my free time to read a book that has nothing to do with my aspirations and goals in life?
This was a recurring setback that was present until the beginning of my fifth year in elementary school; Consequently, during this period in my life
my entire outlook on the matter would be altered forever. My teacher, Ms. McCormick, was an excellent instructor yet it was only her first year
teaching. She was my favorite teacher until she told the class that we would have to read our own handpicked booked. My mood completely
changed; nonetheless I did what was required. The book I picked was in regular book format and audio; because I thought I was slick, I tried to get the
audio version, but my teacher caught me and told me no. I used to choose the books I read based off of the cover, which was ironic because of the
saying: "don't judge a book by its cover". That didn't

The Pros And Cons Of Reading Books
Most students today hate reading books, papers, and writing papers. Reading and writing is different to everyone. Some may not even notice they need
to read and write to do everyday activities. Most think about school when they hear the words reading and writing. Personal experience struggling to
write papers and jumbling words together created negative literacy thoughts. Although the experience of reading and writing during the first few years
of school seemed entertaining, negative thoughts originate as school went on. The early years of reading books were more like cartoons with giant

writing a paper because the different topics will make a simple paper to a complex paper in seconds.
A handle full of students suffer or struggle from sort of reading disability. A few have trouble processing the words in the book or paper. Students
may suffer from common reading or writing disability like dyslexia or ADHD. In the United States nearly 3 million people suffer from dyslexia.
Dyslexia is not only for children but adults as well. Dyslexia is not being able to process words or letter during reading. ADHD is not being able to

called Dragon Rider by Cornella Funke. It was five hundred and thirty five pages! When it comes to reading I am a superstar! When I'm reading I am
able to get a moral lesson from what I read, so it ends up helping me in the long run of my life
I have had numerous amounts of positive...show more content...
She also taught me to finish something if I started it, and that carried over to my reading. If I start reading a book I always finish it and do my best
to understand it. So, she instilled what I know about reading and she influenced the way I read. She always told me, when I was younger, to
pronounce my words right so that when I get older I would pronounce my words right. All that she has said to me and taught me when I was coming
up as a younger child helped me get to the level of reading I am on today and also to the level of understanding I have of all the words I read. Without
her encouraging me in this way I would have had problems understanding things that I read and wouldn't be as smart as I have grown to be. I am
very thankful of how I was brought up as a kid. When I'm reading, it doesn't really matter where I read. When I'm reading I go into a different world
and get to a place where I feel as if I'm part of the story and can relate to the main character and what he or she is going through. Also, when I'm
reading I think the best place for me would be where it's quiet because I find it easier to concentrate in silence. I also read better when I'm upset
because it gives me an outlet to release anger and allows me to get my work done. All throughout my life, I've had many good experiences reading.
When it comes to reading, for me, good reading just comes

My Reading Experience

  • 1. My Reading Experience I grew up in a household where knowledge is everything, and I received a solid foundation in the reading and writing basics from the time I was three years old. The biggest motivator I had during my reading experience was my mother. My mom played a humongous role in teaching me the necessary materials to use on my reading journey. Her main goal was making sure that I became exposed to the concepts of reading and writing before I entered school. Although reading and writing were taught in my early school years, my knowledge base and love of these subject areas comes from my mother. Thus, I credit my mother with teaching me to read and write. My mom has always been an ardent reader and she loves everything about words. Growing up, she instilled the value of the power behind knowledge into my siblings and me early on. While I was still in the womb, she read to me daily. Later, as a small child, she read me bedtime stories and taught me how to read them back to her. I struggled with pacing and volume when I began learning how to read. Consequently, my mother made me read more to improve my problem. The more I read, the more I began to fall in love with the way a book sounds rather than its composition. Through this newfound passion I began to approach reading like a challenge: the bigger the book, the better. My house was stocked with classics like Jane Eyre, Pretty Women, and Dracula. My love for reading developed from these stories which later shaped my favorite Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Personal Experience of Reading C. S. Lewis once said "You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me", which is extremely similar to my personal outlook. Novels have given me an extensive amount of rewards over the years. The knowledge reading has given me has been extensive; additionally, literature has been nothing but a boon to me. I have always considered myself a rather advanced reader, and having the skill of advanced comprehension while reading has been an extremely useful tool that I continue to utilize. As I write, I use the countless hours of experience reading to create an insightful and logical paper. For as long as I have been able to read, I can always remember being much more enamored with what I would find in the library or at home much more so than that of what was given to us during class. Books from class would simply make me want to fall asleep, meanwhile the books I would find for myself would create a door into another world unlike any that I had seen. Due to books giving me a friend, gifting me with an improved attention to detail, and a superior (and sometimes odd) vocabulary, reading has improved my life by a large margin. Books have been an extensive aid to me during my years in elementary and middle school. Moreover, without the aid of literature, my life at that time would have been extremely lonely and uneventful; due to my lack of friends at the time, books acted as a sort of placeholder. My taste in literature began with autobiographies, and then expanded to almost anything I could get my hands on. At night, I would read novels by book–light before I would go to bed. For my adolescent mind, literature took me to a fantasy world where anything was possible. Adventures were simply a page away, and the size and scope of fantasy books took me to far reaching places of which I will never see with my own eyes. Although I appreciated these books very much, I do not believe my teachers did as much. I have many memories of having my books taken away because I was reading during class Fortunately, this was not always the case, but reading had a massive impact on my childhood this way. Additionally, Elementary school was my renaissance for knowledge from Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection About Writing And Reading Growing up I was never the best writer or reader. Every time I read a certain book for school, I tend to just read past the lines and not know what I just read. Some material would be interesting but never caught my attention to the point that attracted my interests. Writing was extremely difficult since it takes a lot of patience and exact wording that I need to use to make my essay come out clean. Plenty of ideas would come up when I am writing my paper, however I just don't know how to get it all down on the piece of paper. My mind would go off tangent to think about the ideas that I wrote before on the paper and then I will try to include those ideas into my paper. This causes a negative flow throughout my essay and results of the ...show more content... This method was very tedious and boring for me but I knew doing this would improve my grade on my homework. The hours I spent on the reading and writing the notes took me almost a few hours. I needed to get every detail down in order to get the most description out of the book so that can help me respond to the questionnaire. After the struggle of one night of reading for this course, I turned in my homework and I felt proud of myself. Two positive outcomes came out of this change of style towards my literacy skills was that I understood the readings so much better and I received a ten out of ten on the homework. I really worked hard for this homework grade since the percentage of homework was almost half of the entire grade. This continued for me for the rest of the semester and the readings got so much easier to read since I was more aware of what was going on and that made me want to do homework even more. In the end of the semester, I was proud to say that I passed this course where it required me to more readings than I have done in my lifetime. This experience with my literacy skills really awakened me. I felt I need some type of incentive so I can perform and improve my reading and writing. I taught myself to study and read well through this course and I ended up graduating which was a wonderful experience. Today, I still use the same Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay On Reading And Reading Throughout my life, I have had many experiences that revolve around reading and writing. In the beginning, my parents waited until kindergarten to start me on my reading journey. They experienced my siblings through their elementary years; they became bored easily because they already knew how to read, so they did not overly teach me before I started school. Luckily, that benefited me greatly. I grew to love education and rose to the top tier of learning in the class. Unfortunately, I do not remember much of my early literacy achievements, but there is one memory that stuck with me. I can still remember when I found out the impact reading and writing can have on the growth of an individual. During the summer after my sixth grade year, my family went to Disney World. Before we packed I had my mom help me pick out books to read during the vacation. She gave me onebook in particular that she thought I would love. As a bibliophile, she knew how to research the best book for a light read–at least I thought she did. After everything was packed up and...show more content... The book had been published earlier that year and it did not have its popularity yet. She explained to me that not every book could end with happiness. Some books needed to have realistic or saddening endings. I had her leave and I sat alone in my room. I needed time to process what I had just read. Through the rest of the trip, I could feel the impact that The Fault in Our Stars had on me. I could not stop thinking about how it was different from the books I had read previously. I realized that there were multiple types of books that I had never pursued before, which allowed me to experience something special. I started to read books that did not have a guaranteed pleasant ending. My writing skills increased because I was able to realize what was real and what was pure fantasy. The Fault in Our Stars allowed me to recognize a variety of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Reflection About Reading And Writing Rick Riordan once said, "The images from the book you make in your head are always going to be the best images." It was in these words that I started reading books at a young age. When I was growing up as a kid in elementary school, I did not have a huge interest in reading or writing, that is, until I met my fourth–grade teacher. When I met Ms. Deemer, my perspective onreading and writing changed as she introduced me to books that were in my pool of interests and gave me tips on writing, resulting in a change of how I looked at reading and writing. Unfortunately, I struggled to read a bit, and this resulted because of my tendency to skim through words while reading, giving me a hard time understanding the main idea of the story or...show more content... I also think that if the book that I would have to read or if the subject I am writing on is appealing to me, then I think I would be more dedicated to reading it, instead of unwillingly do it. At this point, I was at the peak of my writing and reading skills. I was soon offered opportunities or advantages from my hard work. For example, my teachers started to congratulate me for my writing on my essays and I was given chances to enter for contests that no one else was given. All of this came with some cons although. Now, I had friends or classmates coming to me for help when I needed to also work on my assignments, which was a huge pain. Additionally, I was bilingual, speaking Vietnamese and English, which helped my in reading Vietnamese and translating it for others, which has proved to be very useful. As a result, I started to take classes to improve on my Vietnamese and started to learn Spanish. Knowing that these languages would help me with my future and choices in life, I decided to not let these opportunities to slip by and grab them. From here on, every time when I would read or write, it felt like an instant, where I just opened my book and closed it or if I picked up a pencil and magically finished writing in a moment. Books were my past time for entertainment and writing was a way to release my ideas onto paper and not forget them. As a result, my perspective changed on reading and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reflective Essay About Reading Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Online Reading Essay Online Reading Essay America, a country created by the outcasts of Europe in the 1700's, is a nation that consists of a diversity not known by any other country. Since the first settlers travelled to this new nation, people from all over the world have come to this great country for many different reasons. Some people come to make a better life for their families, some people come to experience freedom, some have come to stay alive and avoid genocide of their own nation, in the past some have even been forced to come to America with their lives being changed forever. In schools today, we learn about the reasons people come to this nation, but it's not often that we learn what happened after they arrived. Textbooks are often written to...show more content... I was an outcast because I had come from another culture that these girls didn't quite understand. If they had been taught about different cultures in their schools before college they would have been able to have a better understanding of where I came from which would have helped them not to judge me so quickly. There are many ways a teacher can incorporate multicultural literature into a classroom. One of the more popular forms of incorporating outside reading is through book clubs or literature circles. In literature circles the teacher brings in about four or five copies of four or five different books. Before beginning to read the books, the teacher will give a brief description of each book to the class (Tompkins). It is usually best if the teacher has already read each book so they can give a better overview of the book. After the students have had a chance to learn a little about each book they will then choose their book, as well as other members for their group. Some teachers may make exceptions to the amount of choices the students have, but the students should be given as much freedom as possible. Most times the books will each tell a story from the perspective of someone from a different culture. • 8. Books vs Ebooks Essay Now days with the rise of digital technology many physical items such as pen and paper are slowly being replaced by computers and smart phones. But is this really a good thing? I read books and of course so do many other people in this class and around the globe. But since the creation of 'e–readers' more and more people have been converting to the technology based side of reading. Although technology is slowly becoming more predominant in this era we should not rely on it to always entertain and keep us occupied. I think 'real, physical' books are better than e–books because you can truly own a book. As Mortimer J. Adler, a popular author, says, 'Full ownership comes only when you have made [the book] a part of yourself, and the best...show more content... Of course that's not strictly true–you can loan your book by loaning your reading device, but that's like giving someone access to one of your books by loaning them an entire library, book cases and all. And books are a tactile experience, meaning they are supposed to be experienced through touch and smell (especially for the old books). A book is meant to be an experience that can have depressions and elevations on the cover and text, feeling the weight of the pages as you turn them and all of these elements when combined make a book what it is, but when you read an e–book you are exposed to digitized text and a screen. And it's been proven that when people are exposed to screens of TVs or computers they are less likely to have a good night sleep. On a web poll about e–books vs. books one person commented, 'I've tried reading a few e–books but I've always given up. I just don't like looking at digitized text when I'm reading a novel. I like the feel, the weight and even the smell of books,' many of the following comments made by others agreed with this persons thoughts. A book is a single–task item that is written to distract the reader from everything else happening around them, they are technology designed for the best possible reading experience. An e–reader, however, tends to be a multi–tasking item with the ability to play music and videos as well as hold books. • 9. Personal Narrative– My Love of Reading and Writing Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre–elementary to college, I've managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I'll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes. I was always a creative child; it was something I just...show more content... Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren't too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction: Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep reading, as long as I wasn't doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn't because of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it. All eighth graders had to take a career class to determine what we wanted to be when we grew up. I remember telling my teacher that I wanted to be an archaeologist and the strange look she Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Why Should I Read? Essay Why Should I Read? "Reading a book is like re–writing it for yourself.... You bring to a novel, anything you read, all your experience of the world. You bring your history and you read it in your own terms." Angela Carter (1940–1992), British author. Why read? Why should I read the book before it comes out in cinema? Why is settling down with a good book better then sitting on the couch watching The Simpson's reruns? I have often pondered the merits of reading, but you don't realise the advantages until you actually begin reading. Until I unlocked my first real book I couldn't have dreamed of the wonders and marvels that it opens to you. It's just that when you do read you discover how exquisite the delights of reading are....show more content... With a book to aid the imagination, a person can go anywhere. They can be marooned on a desert island where normal boys change to savage beasts in Lord of the Flies, they can become Hannibal lector's next victim or even have a romance with the arrogant Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. Books hold vast amounts of knowledge. In every book, there is something to learn. Biographies and Diaries can give us accounts of the Second World War, the sinking of the Titanic, the truth behind celebrities while history books teach us not to make the same mistakes twice. Children should be encouraged to read from a young age, it helps them with spelling and grammar. It cultivates their young minds and helps them to believe anything is possible. In 1966 Margaret Craig McNamara founded Reading Is Fundamental after discovering that the children she volunteered to tutor in Washington, D.C., owned no or few books. It develops and delivers children's and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school–age children to read regularly. Last year, RIF celebrated its 35th anniversary and the milestone of placing more than 200 million books in the hands and homes of children most at risk of educational failure. Books are a free pastime and can help to escape from reality.

  • 12. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. • 13. Essay on Reading-Is It Important? Soriano, Rachel English 091 July 19 2011 Reading–Is It Important? Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. There should never be a limitation on reading, we have the freedom as human beings to interpret something any way we want too. Books have that power to take you into your thoughts and really examine what your thoughts are on the book and how you feel and when it's fiction it can take you into the story and get you to really use your imagination, there can be no limitations when it comes to your own thoughts and your own imagination. Rick Moody said "I believe in the absolute and unlimited liberty of reading, I believe in wandering through the stacks and picking out the first thing that strikes me" (pg.3) and later in the essay he said "I believe there is not now and never will be an authority who can tell me how to interpret, how to read, how to find the pearl of literary meaning in all cases" (pg. 4). The author clearly believes that reading should be left up to the imagination and the reader should have complete control on how he or she looks at the book they are reading. After reading this piece, Moody definitely caught my attention with the idea that there are people out there that believe there is a certain way to read something and you never really realize how seriously people take the topic of reading and how many different opinions there are on the issue. • 14. Reflection About Reading Reading Introduction Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children. The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content... The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing. Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. My Experience Of Reading While I was in middle school in sixth grade I actually didn't know how to read books or any story my teachers would give me. As I was reading through the passages they would give me, I noticed that while I read a story it wouldn't stick to my head. I then told myself that it is going to be difficult to read passages since nothing would click in my head. There were times where the teacher would have the students and I take mini quizzes and I would hardly understand on what the reader was talking about. I would fail the quizzes due to the reason that I never gained much knowledge in reading. Articles and stories would always be tough for me to read since I didn't have many experience in reading. Therefore, half of sixth grade my teacher whom was named Ms. Soto which was an English teacher had really made reading easier for me as the semester went by. I had told her I was having difficulties in reading and she gladly helped me out. Every time I needed help with a problem from the story she was gladly there to help me. For example, the many things she would help me out with was having to stay after school for about an hour reading poems, articles and short passages from books she would give me. She also had me read magazine pages every three times a week to better my understanding of what I'm reading. I then was told that it would be a good opportunity to come in on Saturdays for reading to better my knowledge in what I'm reading. • 16. My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written. When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what was my wonderful work of mental art. The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading of work. • 17. Reflection About Reading And Writing From the point when I was a little girl to now, I have changed my ways of thinking about reading and writing a lot. I remember back in kindergarten I was put in a program called ESOL, I absolutely hated it; I felt stupid because I was one of few kids that went there from my class. I was later to learn that it was because I didn't speak English. In that program they would pull us out of class to help us with reading and writing, and the clearest memory I have is being sat at a table with the teacher and not really wanting to read and her forcing me to sound out every word and follow along with my finger. This early on in my life I did not enjoy reading, I thought it was boring and there was no point to it. This continued until I got removed from ESOL in third grade. That was when I picked up a book I actually enjoyed, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, I automatically fell in love with it. This was the turning point for my way of seeing reading and writing. By the time I was in fifth grade I was one of the kids you would call a nerd, because I always had a book with me, I don't really remember many of the books I did read though. Everyday when I got home I would plop down on the couch and start reading. I wouldn't do homework just because I was reading. My mom would get so annoyed with me she would say, "get off that couch and get your face out of that book! Do something else for a change!" I remember in earlier years she would beg me to pick up a book but Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Reflection About Reading One can describe reading with a plethora of words, good and bad; many people enjoy reading as well. At an early age, I knew I was not one of these people. I would not say I despised reading, however, I could not grasp the importance of reading and how it could be beneficial to me and my growth. Not only were my teachers enforcing this upon me, but my parents as well. The passages and scriptures that I had to read in class were not the problem, but when the hours invested in reading interfered with my after school free time the dilemma occurred. I had no passion in becoming an author or journalist, why must I sacrifice my free time to read a book that has nothing to do with my aspirations and goals in life? This was a recurring setback that was present until the beginning of my fifth year in elementary school; Consequently, during this period in my life my entire outlook on the matter would be altered forever. My teacher, Ms. McCormick, was an excellent instructor yet it was only her first year teaching. She was my favorite teacher until she told the class that we would have to read our own handpicked booked. My mood completely changed; nonetheless I did what was required. The book I picked was in regular book format and audio; because I thought I was slick, I tried to get the audio version, but my teacher caught me and told me no. I used to choose the books I read based off of the cover, which was ironic because of the saying: "don't judge a book by its cover". That didn't Get more content on HelpWriting.net
