Our cover was chosen to commemorate
Chestnut Avenue on Tooting Bec Common in
its autumnal glory. These beautiful trees were
cut down by Wandsworth Council last month,
despite great opposition from local people.
This artist’s impression of Chestnut Avenue
after the chop provided by Save Chestnut
Avenue looks bleakly accurate as we go to
press, at least until a new avenue of young
lime trees is planted this month.

We attended the public meeting on the future
of the Streatham Police Base and learned
that it will remain a base for neighbourhood
police to use because its lease runs for
another 7 years. But the front counter needs
staffing. We pointed out to the Mayor’s Office
for Police and Crime (MOPAC) representative
that opening from 5-10pm evenings would
reduce costs and encourage footfall because
more people would be able to report in
person. They have promised to take this back
to the Met for review.
The inStreatham Business Improvement
District (BID) will re-ballot all businesses
to decide whether to continue with a BID
next February. You’ve seen the bars, the
hanging flower baskets, seating, and new
businesses opening. The BID has helped
make Streatham a welcoming place for new
businesses. At a recent BID networking
event, Jayke of Brickwood Coffee said,
“the BID has provided outstanding service
and help.”, and the owner of ExhibitB
commented, “The community focus and the
ongoing commitment from the BID to improve
the area contributed towards our decision to
expand to Streatham.” Please encourage
business owners to vote YES next February.
The Little Big Peace event took place over
three days in September to mark International
Day of Peace and was a roaring success.
Several schools including Woodmansterne
and St Andrew’s held simultaneous
assemblies for peace and Hideaway hosted
a free evening of film and music, whilst White
Lion Stables and the Gracefield Gardens
Health centre hosted drop-in events for
families and relaxation sessions.
We loved the Streatham Free Film Festival
last month, enjoying Moulin Rouge at
Hideaway and The Princess Bride at St
Margaret’s in Streatham Hill. Well done to
fantastic band of volunteers and business
sponsors who made it happen.

Mieszko vs Norwich House
I want to see responsible businesses thrive
in Streatham. My fellow councillors and I are
committed to championing local businesses,
but only while their activities do not have a
harmful impact on residents. Unfortunately,
for the past few months I have been dealing
with a case of a High Road store that has
failed to meet its legal obligations or show
any sense of civic duty.
Since opening in July, Mieszko supermarket
has made the lives of many residents of
neighbouring Norwich House a misery,
especially at night. Without seeking planning
permission, the owner installed over a dozen
cooling and refrigeration fans at its rear,
facing towards bedrooms and living rooms in
Norwich House. It is inexcusable that for over
three months the store has taken almost no
action to reduce the noise emitted from these
units.
The noise disturbance is so bad that several
residents have been forced to sleep in their
hallways, or even temporarily move out.
Some of those I have met are sleep-deprived,
stressed and close to tears; with significant
ongoing knock-on effects on their work,
personal lives, and physical and mental
health.
Mieszko has failed to act despite repeated
warnings, enforcement notices and even fines
from the Council. Promises on timescales for
action have been made to myself, to officers
and to Chuka Umunna MP, yet not followed
through. At the end of September, Mieszko’s
estimated it would take 8-10 weeks to carry
out the necessary noise mitigation measures,
but they hadn’t even appointed a contractor.
Enough is enough; which is why I am glad
the Council is pursuing both a community
safety prosecution and further planning
enforcement action. Mieszko’s behaviour isn’t
acceptable for a business on our High Road,
or indeed anywhere in the Borough. This
won’t ease residents' suffering in the short-
term: Mieszko could have agreed to switch
off all the offending units until they had put
the recommended noise mitigation measures
in place, but they chose not to.
Since using social media to highlight the
case, I have been heartened by the response
locally: the expressions of support for the
residents, the offers of free legal advice, and
the suggestions for consumer activism. It’s
clear most people in Streatham are sensitive
to the delicate balance between the needs of
residents and businesses in the blocks along
the High Road.
Mieszko should take immediate action to
demonstrate they share that understanding.

Spooks in Streatham
There is a division of MI5 called “A”
(Technical) Branch, responsible for phone
tapping, specialised secret photography
and they also operate mobile and static
surveillance units. Mobile Surveillance
Officers in Section 4 within “A” Branch are
nicknamed “The Watchers”, and their role is
covert observation of targets using specially
equipped vehicles.
Back in the 1970’s the servicing of their
vehicles was carried out in Clapham, but
when it emerged that the premises were
being monitored by the Russian KGB in
the height of the Cold War they moved to
512-522 Streatham High Road. On the
corner with Kempshott Road, the premises
used to be South London Motors, a Jaguar
and Bentley dealer. In these busy and very
public surroundings, officially used by the
Department of the Environment, perhaps it
was thought they would not attract attention.
The location did not appear in the Royal Mail
address database at the time!
The building had peeling paint on the outside
with a large extraction chimney, razor wire
fencing, roller-shutter doors which were
rarely open, CCTV cameras all around, and
a security kiosk with a barrier on Kempshott
Road. There were no signs to signify what
went on there and no way to see inside
the building. But supposedly this is where
the British Secret Service and the team of
specialised mechanics worked at modifying
vehicles for the Watchers.
It is rumoured that the Streatham depot was
the place where the vehicles needed by MI6
handlers to remove the KGB double agent,
Oleg Gordievsky, from Russia into Finland in
1985 were modified. He was hidden in the
boot of a car.
The building was apparently MI5’s car
servicing depot for years but ops have
moved to another secret location and it was
demolished in June 2009, making way for
Access Self Storage.

InStreatham Events and Activities
As we draw closer to the end of the year, it’s time
to wave goodbye to summer season in Streatham
and welcome the winter festivities!
Over the summer, we’ve carried out a number
of projects to improve the scene in Streatham;
we now have new seating and planting installed
on Leigham Court Road and outside Streatham
Station and beautiful uplighters in the trees at the
South of Streatham Common which have been a
hit with local residents.
Our next big event will be our annual Christmas
Lights On experience in collaboration with Small
Business Saturday held on the 2nd of December at
Babington Plaza.
InStreatham re ballot 2018
InStreatham was voted in by local businesses in
2013 and have since invested more than £1.5m
into making Streatham a great place to live, work
and visit. This annual levy has funded policing, public
toilets, hanging baskets, jet wash cleaning, chewing
gum removal, banners, free business recycling,
shopfront improvements, marketing campaigns and
Christmas tree and lights whilst also supporting
and representing businesses through Business
awards and networking and tackling issues that
affect them.

Destination Streatham
With a quarter of a million pounds investment
each year, we can create an even bigger and
brighter future for Streatham.
Some of our proposed plans include:
• Safer and cleaner roads. The BID will lobby for
green buses and 20mph speed limits.
• We will carry out consumer research to find
out what our residents really want and capture
demographic data to analyse who goes where
to shop and why
• This will help us to attract independents
businesses to the high street that meet those
needs and the chains that bring a high end feel.
• Progress the look of the high street. Help and
incentivise businesses to look better, trade in
better ways and keep shop fronts clean.
• LobbyTfL for improved bus provision East to
West to encourage local shoppers and revellers
from neighbouring areas such as Balham and
Norwood.
Streatham has an amazing events programme – we
hold 10 yearly events! This summer saw an array of
events take place successfully from the Streatham
Food festival to the Free Film Festival, we also
supported the Streatham Festival, Love Streatham
Family Fun Day andThe Little Big Peace Event.
Over the next five years, the BID will grow the
annual festival and events programme; more
cultural and creative events to excite people
about our rich heritage, green spaces and stunning
architecture.
So make sure the local businesses you visit
get involved andVOTEYES in 2018 for
#InStreathamtogether
The future for Streatham
In 2018, businesses will have the opportunity to
decide on whether to continue the great work
of inStreatham.This will mean a further £1.25m
by the businesses into the local community over
a second five year term. Our future plans include
further investment into festivals and events to
celebrate Streatham’s culture and heritage.
We will work hard to ensure we attract new
customers for our member companies and also
attract new retailers to the High Road. In the
coming months, M&S,Aldi andThe Gym Group
will be opening their doors on Streatham High
road and we have warmly welcomed Brickwood
Streatham and Exhibit B in the last few weeks
alone.

The Rookery Needs You!
Dominic Leary
We’ve had a fabulous summer in the Rookery,
busy with visitors and events to raise
money. We’ve had Rookfest, our plant sale,
Shakespeare from the Handlebards and films
as part of Streatham Film Festival.
The paddling pool was very popular too! This
is the second year we have managed to keep
the pool open. We have another Doggy Splash
Day on Sunday 8th October with Pets as
Therapy, so bring your four-legged friend 11am
– 4.30pm.
There is a common thread through all these
activities – volunteers who help at events as
stewards, in the gardens, or assist with funding
bids. Whatever your skill, we can probably use
it!
Now is your chance to volunteer! Help with
conservation work in the Local Nature Reserve
(LNR), where there are sessions every Tuesday
and Thursday 10am – 3pm, meet at the café.
Some Saturday sessions are planned.
We’d really appreciate some volunteers to
help with the Christmas Fair on Sunday 17th
December too.
At our AGM in September, Cllr Sonia Winifred
explained Lambeth Parks must find budget
savings. SCCoop has a contract until October
2018, and our future is not secure, so we
are thinking about how we will continue our
services. It’s not going to be easy and we’ll
need your support.

Behind the scenes Streatham
Many people know E & A Wates as the
Furniture and Interiors store in Mitcham Lane.
Anyone who has been on a Wates workshop
tour will have discovered the talented crafts-
people behind the scenes and their furniture
restoration work., but five years on from
her tour Sharon Brooks works there as an
upholsterer!
Sharon completed a degree in Fashion
Design and worked as a Womenswear
designer for more than 15 years. Seeking a
more ‘hands-on’ outlet for her creativity, six
years ago she took a recreational Upholstery
course. Sharon recalls, “during that week in
the workshop environment, I fell in love with
the traditional materials being used and craft
skills”. Eager & excited to learn more she
took the Association of Master Upholsterers
& Soft Furnishers, training courses.
The AMUSF course began with a simple
drop-in seat, then progressed to dining chairs
and small armchairs. The course introduces
traditional techniques of webbing, stuffing
and stitching with coir fibre or horsehair,
hand springing and covering. Then complex
techniques such as sprung edges and deep-
buttoning are covered.
“The courses were a fantastic starting
point” says Sharon. But wanting to pursue
Upholstery as a full-time job was a big step
- it is a physically demanding and often
dirty job. “I wanted to know if the workshop
environment was really for me, so I began
to look for experience. Working in various
Upholstery workshops often unpaid, ripping
out old moth-eaten and dirty covers, made
me realise I relished the chance to get my
hands on”.
www.heartstreatham.co.uk 17
Sharon joined the E & A Wates workshop just
over a year ago to work alongside a team of
experienced Upholsters with incredible skills.
“I`ve learnt so much from the team” Sharon
says. “It was the perfect next-step”. Sharon
has worked on many mid-century, traditional
and antique pieces including two Victorian
Iron frame chairs made of layers of hessian
& coir fibre hand-stitched to the iron frame.
It’s a time consuming & skilled process, but
according to Sharon, “a real pleasure to
work on - you know you are creating a truly
bespoke piece for the client and continuing a
wonderful craft tradition”.
E & A Wates is a traditional workshop with
expert crafts-people in cabinet-making,
polishing, caning & rush work and gilding
working side by side. Their large and varied
client base ranges from locals to hotels and
corporate board-rooms. “I love the variety of
the job!” Sharon says. “I’ve worked on a set
of rare Art Nouveau chairs, a Danish style arm
chair in a funky print, an Ernest Race Heron
chair and a set of leather boardroom chairs
with close nailing.
“There is a great ‘family’ atmosphere and
sense of camaraderie across the Wates
team” Sharon adds…. “and always plenty of
workshop banter to keep us going!”

Transport for London (TfL) has been working in partnership with Lambeth Council to
deliver safety improvements at the St Leonard’s junction because its recent collision
history ranks it as a priority for improvement.
This section of the A23 along Streatham High Road is heavily congested and constrained by narrow
roads and pavements and the confluence of the A23,A214 and the A216 Mitcham Lane. It is a busy bus
corridor and a vibrant local high street.
TfL’s plans aim to improve safety for all road users as it continues to work with Lambeth Council
and the local community to develop further improvements along Streatham High Road.
TfL welcomes comments and suggestions about the proposals at
consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/st-leonards by Sunday 29 October 2017.
What are the plans?
For pedestrians
• Relocate the controlled crossing at the junction. At the moment there is poor visibility between
people using the southern unsignalised crossing and oncoming motorists. By relocating the signal-
controlled crossing that is currently north of the junction to the proposed new location south
where demand is higher, and by making it a straight-across signal-controlled crossing,TfL can make
it safer for all road users. This relocated crossing would replace the existing unsignalised crossing on
the southern arm and the crossing north of the junction where there is significantly lower demand
• Create a raised imprint block-paved effect crossing on Gleneldon Road indicating to drivers that
pedestrians are likely to be crossing making it easier and safer for people approaching the relocated
crossing.
For cyclists
• Cycling would be permitted in the proposed bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens (see overleaf).

For bus passengers
• Introduce a bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens approaching the junction by removing some parking.
15 high-frequency bus routes pass through the junction. Delays resulting from the new crossing
would be mitigated by a new 170 metre bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens approaching the junction.
There are often gaps in the parking so the proposal minimises the overall loss of parking spaces and
makes more efficient use of the space
• Ban the right-turn into and out of Shrubbery Road on Streatham High Road. Northbound buses
are currently delayed by vehicles turning right into Shrubbery Road, approximately 150 metres
north of the junction, because of a short right-turn pocket in the road.TfL therefore proposes to
ban the right-turn from Streatham High Road into Shrubbery Road for all traffic. There would also
be a longer right-turn pocket to allow vehicles to queue without blocking traffic when turning
into Sunnyhill Road.Vehicles turning right out of Shrubbery Road can also delay southbound traffic
including buses so it is proposed that is banned too.The banned turns will only be implemented if
needed.TfL would monitor congestion and bus delays to confirm if they are needed to mitigate the
impact of the relocated crossing and making it controlled and will publish its findings
• TfL would need to extend the right-turn ban from Mitcham Lane into Streatham High Road
southbound to include buses. This won’t have an impact on bus passengers as this turn is only used
by buses 'not in service'. By fully banning the turn it reduces the traffic impact of the relocated
crossing and making it controlled.
TfL would coordinate the crossing relocation with planned work to modernise the traffic signals with
pedestrian countdown (telling you how long you have left to start to cross) and resurface the junction,
which will save delays and disruption.
The plans form part of the Mayor of London’s plan for Healthy Streets - a long-term vision to
encourage more Londoners to walk, cycle and use public transport by making London’s streets
healthier, safer and more welcoming. By providing more safer space we can encourage more people
to use these healthy and sustainable forms of transport, whilst keeping other traffic moving. These
improvements will contribute to Healthy Streets by:
• Improving road safety, in particular for pedestrians and cyclists
• Encouraging more people to walk
• Improving the public realm and contributing to the wider regeneration of the area
• Maintaining reliable bus services.
TfL expects there will be some delays in journey times and some improvements – see the website for
the detail. It will monitor the impacts of the relocated crossing and will continue to work with Lambeth
Council and the local community to develop further improvements along Streatham High Road.
The aim is to start work on the junction by January 2018 for completion by spring 2018.
Please give TfL your comments about the proposals for the junction and suggestions for other changes
it might consider by 29 October 2017.

Dr Nilu reveals the Kardashian
secret to silky smooth skin
When you need to look your best like the
Kardashian sisters, with beautifully silky
smooth, hair free skin the go-to treatment
is laser hair removal; as offered here at the
Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre.
Kim Kardashian used laser removal on the
hair on her forehead. "If you Google 2008 or
2007, I had the craziest, hairiest hairline, so I
did laser it."
Khloe Kardashian used laser hair removal
on her legs, bikini area and underarms, "No
nasty ingrown hairs. I laser my bikini line. I
even laser my legs. It's so much easier than
having to shave every single day."
Their younger sisters, Kendall and Kylie
Jenner are also fans of this long-lasting hair
removal treatment. Model, Kendall, says she
used the treatment to "[get] all the hair off
my body". Kylie, the youngest member of
the family, has openly described laser hair
removal as "life changing".
We at the Brigstock Centre completely
agree!
Why laser hair removal?
The treatment uses a laser machine to zap
away hair from the root. The laser light
reacts with the melanin in the hair follicle and
gradually kills off each hair from the root.
Unlike shaving, waxing, or epilating, once the
hair follicle has been treated, it will usually
die. When hair does occasionally grow back,
it tends to be finer than before, and easily
removed with a quick laser session.
Laser hair removal is suitable for all skin
types.
Brigstock clients have been blown away
by the results:-
"The hair removal has been very effective
and has immensely improved
my confidence and self-esteem. I highly
recommend this treatment and
continue to see amazing results."
"I started to see results from the first session
and after 6 sessions
I'm now less hairy on my body."
" My skin is much smoother and there is
much less hair growth on the treated areas.
As well as this I have realised that my skin is
much fairer as the previous dark patches on
my skin have now reduced and my skin tone is
much more even throughout.

Streatham Sparkle in September
Streatham IHC have started their first season
in the second tier of UK hockey since the
1990’s, and take on their toughest test in years
with a new look team. Coach Jeremy Cornish
has recruited some exciting signings including
MK Lightning stars Adam Carr and Michael
Farn, Hull Pirates forward Ryan Watt, and all-
star forward Aidan Doughty.
Streatham are now competing with teams
that have played at a higher level -Swindon
Wildcats, Basingstoke Bison, Peterborough
Phantoms and Bracknell Bees, and got off to
a great start winning three of the four opening
games.
Coach Cornish, from Ontario, Canada was
famous as a player for being one of the
toughest, however his coaching style is one
of discipline, with quick agile skilled players,
backed by those who can drop the gloves
when needed like Brandon Miles who has
already fought three times this season and
added goals to his game too.
Despite the feisty nature of the sport on the
ice at times, the atmosphere off it is always
friendly, with fans of both teams mixing well
with lots of fun antics such as period break
SCORO, where a member of the crowd gets
the chance to win a cash prize by stepping on
to the ice and firing at goal from the halfway
line.
Ice hockey is very exciting to watch and
Streatham IHC are keen to invite you to
come and experience a game. There’s a
special KIDS GO FREE offer for the home
game against Basingstoke Bison on Sunday
22 October. Children must be accompanied
by an adult -just present a copy of this
magazine at the gate.

Streatham Police Update
By: inSPecTor TereSa HUBBarD
It’s been a busy month already this autumn.
Our officers seized another dangerous weapon
potentially saving a life. They had responded to
an emergency call to Police about a pending
fight when they were able to take a knife with a
10-inch blade off the street, and probably just in
the nick of time.
Later in the month, PC's Collette Daoud,
Vincente, Therza-Gonzales and Sam Aston
from Streatham dealt with a difficult person in
a mental health crisis during which they were
bombarded with missiles whilst trying to help.
They showed tremendous professionalism,
courage and compassion. All in a day’s work!
In news from nearby teams, we can report the
Gipsy Hill and Knights Hill teams have made
arrests and confiscated quantities of drugs
believed to be heroin and cannabis after several
incidents, one of which followed a foot chase.
Drugs in these areas affect Streatham as well.
Thanks to everyone who attended the Borough
Commanders meeting last week to get more
information about the possible closure of Police
Stations and Front Offices. Your questions
and representations were appreciated by
our South Lambeth Police Team and it was
a good opportunity to pass on thoughts to
the Mayor’s Office on Policing and Crime
(MOPAC) representative. I can personally attest
to the excellent job Esther and Jed do in our
Streatham Patrol base, and we have heard the
same from many members of the public.

  • 4. www.heartstreatham.co.uk4 We attended the public meeting on the future of the Streatham Police Base and learned that it will remain a base for neighbourhood police to use because its lease runs for another 7 years. But the front counter needs staffing. We pointed out to the Mayor’s Office for Police and Crime (MOPAC) representative that opening from 5-10pm evenings would reduce costs and encourage footfall because more people would be able to report in person. They have promised to take this back to the Met for review. The inStreatham Business Improvement District (BID) will re-ballot all businesses to decide whether to continue with a BID next February. You’ve seen the bars, the hanging flower baskets, seating, and new businesses opening. The BID has helped make Streatham a welcoming place for new businesses. At a recent BID networking event, Jayke of Brickwood Coffee said, “the BID has provided outstanding service and help.”, and the owner of ExhibitB commented, “The community focus and the ongoing commitment from the BID to improve the area contributed towards our decision to expand to Streatham.” Please encourage business owners to vote YES next February. The Little Big Peace event took place over three days in September to mark International Day of Peace and was a roaring success. Several schools including Woodmansterne and St Andrew’s held simultaneous assemblies for peace and Hideaway hosted a free evening of film and music, whilst White Lion Stables and the Gracefield Gardens Health centre hosted drop-in events for families and relaxation sessions. We loved the Streatham Free Film Festival last month, enjoying Moulin Rouge at Hideaway and The Princess Bride at St Margaret’s in Streatham Hill. Well done to fantastic band of volunteers and business sponsors who made it happen.

  • 8. www.heartstreatham.co.uk8 Mieszko vs Norwich House I want to see responsible businesses thrive in Streatham. My fellow councillors and I are committed to championing local businesses, but only while their activities do not have a harmful impact on residents. Unfortunately, for the past few months I have been dealing with a case of a High Road store that has failed to meet its legal obligations or show any sense of civic duty. Since opening in July, Mieszko supermarket has made the lives of many residents of neighbouring Norwich House a misery, especially at night. Without seeking planning permission, the owner installed over a dozen cooling and refrigeration fans at its rear, facing towards bedrooms and living rooms in Norwich House. It is inexcusable that for over three months the store has taken almost no action to reduce the noise emitted from these units. The noise disturbance is so bad that several residents have been forced to sleep in their hallways, or even temporarily move out. Some of those I have met are sleep-deprived, stressed and close to tears; with significant ongoing knock-on effects on their work, personal lives, and physical and mental health. Mieszko has failed to act despite repeated warnings, enforcement notices and even fines from the Council. Promises on timescales for action have been made to myself, to officers and to Chuka Umunna MP, yet not followed through. At the end of September, Mieszko’s estimated it would take 8-10 weeks to carry out the necessary noise mitigation measures, but they hadn’t even appointed a contractor. Enough is enough; which is why I am glad the Council is pursuing both a community safety prosecution and further planning enforcement action. Mieszko’s behaviour isn’t acceptable for a business on our High Road, or indeed anywhere in the Borough. This won’t ease residents' suffering in the short- term: Mieszko could have agreed to switch off all the offending units until they had put the recommended noise mitigation measures in place, but they chose not to. Since using social media to highlight the case, I have been heartened by the response locally: the expressions of support for the residents, the offers of free legal advice, and the suggestions for consumer activism. It’s clear most people in Streatham are sensitive to the delicate balance between the needs of residents and businesses in the blocks along the High Road. Mieszko should take immediate action to demonstrate they share that understanding. Cllr Malcolm Clark, Streatham Wells mclark@ lambeth.gov.uk Soapbox

  • 10. www.heartstreatham.co.uk10 Spooks in Streatham There is a division of MI5 called “A” (Technical) Branch, responsible for phone tapping, specialised secret photography and they also operate mobile and static surveillance units. Mobile Surveillance Officers in Section 4 within “A” Branch are nicknamed “The Watchers”, and their role is covert observation of targets using specially equipped vehicles. Back in the 1970’s the servicing of their vehicles was carried out in Clapham, but when it emerged that the premises were being monitored by the Russian KGB in the height of the Cold War they moved to 512-522 Streatham High Road. On the corner with Kempshott Road, the premises used to be South London Motors, a Jaguar and Bentley dealer. In these busy and very public surroundings, officially used by the Department of the Environment, perhaps it was thought they would not attract attention. The location did not appear in the Royal Mail address database at the time! The building had peeling paint on the outside with a large extraction chimney, razor wire fencing, roller-shutter doors which were rarely open, CCTV cameras all around, and a security kiosk with a barrier on Kempshott Road. There were no signs to signify what went on there and no way to see inside the building. But supposedly this is where the British Secret Service and the team of specialised mechanics worked at modifying vehicles for the Watchers. It is rumoured that the Streatham depot was the place where the vehicles needed by MI6 handlers to remove the KGB double agent, Oleg Gordievsky, from Russia into Finland in 1985 were modified. He was hidden in the boot of a car. The building was apparently MI5’s car servicing depot for years but ops have moved to another secret location and it was demolished in June 2009, making way for Access Self Storage. Over the summer, we’ve carried out a number of projects to improve the scene in Streatham; we now have new seating and planting installed on Leigham Court Road and outside Streatham Station and beautiful uplighters in the trees at the South of Streatham Common which have been a hit with local residents. Our next big event will be our annual Christmas Lights On experience in collaboration with Small Business Saturday held on the 2nd of December at Babington Plaza. InStreatham re ballot 2018 InStreatham was voted in by local businesses in 2013 and have since invested more than £1.5m into making Streatham a great place to live, work and visit. This annual levy has funded policing, public toilets, hanging baskets, jet wash cleaning, chewing gum removal, banners, free business recycling, shopfront improvements, marketing campaigns and Christmas tree and lights whilst also supporting and representing businesses through Business awards and networking and tackling issues that affect them.

Some of our proposed plans include: • Safer and cleaner roads. The BID will lobby for green buses and 20mph speed limits. • We will carry out consumer research to find out what our residents really want and capture demographic data to analyse who goes where to shop and why • This will help us to attract independents businesses to the high street that meet those needs and the chains that bring a high end feel. • Progress the look of the high street. Help and incentivise businesses to look better, trade in better ways and keep shop fronts clean. • LobbyTfL for improved bus provision East to West to encourage local shoppers and revellers from neighbouring areas such as Balham and Norwood. Streatham has an amazing events programme – we hold 10 yearly events! This summer saw an array of events take place successfully from the Streatham Food festival to the Free Film Festival, we also supported the Streatham Festival, Love Streatham Family Fun Day andThe Little Big Peace Event. Over the next five years, the BID will grow the annual festival and events programme; more cultural and creative events to excite people about our rich heritage, green spaces and stunning architecture. So make sure the local businesses you visit get involved andVOTEYES in 2018 for #InStreathamtogether The future for Streatham In 2018, businesses will have the opportunity to decide on whether to continue the great work of inStreatham. This will mean a further £1.25m by the businesses into the local community over a second five year term. Our future plans include further investment into festivals and events to celebrate Streatham’s culture and heritage. We will work hard to ensure we attract new customers for our member companies and also attract new retailers to the High Road. In the coming months, M&S,Aldi andThe Gym Group will be opening their doors on Streatham High road and we have warmly welcomed Brickwood Streatham and Exhibit B in the last few weeks alone.
  • 14. www.heartstreatham.co.uk14 The Rookery Needs You! Dominic Leary We’ve had a fabulous summer in the Rookery, busy with visitors and events to raise money. We’ve had Rookfest, our plant sale, Shakespeare from the Handlebards and films as part of Streatham Film Festival. The paddling pool was very popular too! This is the second year we have managed to keep the pool open. We have another Doggy Splash Day on Sunday 8th October with Pets as Therapy, so bring your four-legged friend 11am – 4.30pm. There is a common thread through all these activities – volunteers who help at events as stewards, in the gardens, or assist with funding bids. Whatever your skill, we can probably use it! Now is your chance to volunteer! Help with conservation work in the Local Nature Reserve (LNR), where there are sessions every Tuesday and Thursday 10am – 3pm, meet at the café. Some Saturday sessions are planned. We’d really appreciate some volunteers to help with the Christmas Fair on Sunday 17th December too. At our AGM in September, Cllr Sonia Winifred explained Lambeth Parks must find budget savings. SCCoop has a contract until October 2018, and our future is not secure, so we are thinking about how we will continue our services. It’s not going to be easy and we’ll need your support. • 16. www.heartstreatham.co.uk16 Behind the scenes Streatham Many people know E & A Wates as the Furniture and Interiors store in Mitcham Lane. Anyone who has been on a Wates workshop tour will have discovered the talented crafts- people behind the scenes and their furniture restoration work., but five years on from her tour Sharon Brooks works there as an upholsterer! Sharon completed a degree in Fashion Design and worked as a Womenswear designer for more than 15 years. Seeking a more ‘hands-on’ outlet for her creativity, six years ago she took a recreational Upholstery course. Sharon recalls, “during that week in the workshop environment, I fell in love with the traditional materials being used and craft skills”. Eager & excited to learn more she took the Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers, training courses. The AMUSF course began with a simple drop-in seat, then progressed to dining chairs and small armchairs. The course introduces traditional techniques of webbing, stuffing and stitching with coir fibre or horsehair, hand springing and covering. Then complex techniques such as sprung edges and deep- buttoning are covered. “The courses were a fantastic starting point” says Sharon. But wanting to pursue Upholstery as a full-time job was a big step - it is a physically demanding and often dirty job. “I wanted to know if the workshop environment was really for me, so I began to look for experience. Working in various Upholstery workshops often unpaid, ripping out old moth-eaten and dirty covers, made me realise I relished the chance to get my hands on”.
  • 17. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 17 Sharon joined the E & A Wates workshop just over a year ago to work alongside a team of experienced Upholsters with incredible skills. “I`ve learnt so much from the team” Sharon says. “It was the perfect next-step”. Sharon has worked on many mid-century, traditional and antique pieces including two Victorian Iron frame chairs made of layers of hessian & coir fibre hand-stitched to the iron frame. It’s a time consuming & skilled process, but according to Sharon, “a real pleasure to work on - you know you are creating a truly bespoke piece for the client and continuing a wonderful craft tradition”. E & A Wates is a traditional workshop with expert crafts-people in cabinet-making, polishing, caning & rush work and gilding working side by side. Their large and varied client base ranges from locals to hotels and corporate board-rooms. “I love the variety of the job!” Sharon says. “I’ve worked on a set of rare Art Nouveau chairs, a Danish style arm chair in a funky print, an Ernest Race Heron chair and a set of leather boardroom chairs with close nailing. “There is a great ‘family’ atmosphere and sense of camaraderie across the Wates team” Sharon adds…. “and always plenty of workshop banter to keep us going!” Useful addresses: Association of Master Upholsterers & Soft Furnishers www.upholsterers.co.uk The Worshipful Company of Upholders of the City of London www.upholders.co.uk Guild of Traditional Upholsterers www.gtu.org.uk £25CUT&STYLEon your first visit to HEADMASTERS Streatham Hill Quote STREATHAM25* Book your appointment today, call 0345 459 7756 or visit www.headmasters.com 172 Streatham Hill, London SW2 4RU Opening hours: Mon-Fri 9am–9pm / Sat-Sun 9am–6pm *Valid until 30th November 2017. • 19. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 19 Transport for London (TfL) has been working in partnership with Lambeth Council to deliver safety improvements at the St Leonard’s junction because its recent collision history ranks it as a priority for improvement. This section of the A23 along Streatham High Road is heavily congested and constrained by narrow roads and pavements and the confluence of the A23,A214 and the A216 Mitcham Lane. It is a busy bus corridor and a vibrant local high street. TfL’s plans aim to improve safety for all road users as it continues to work with Lambeth Council and the local community to develop further improvements along Streatham High Road. TfL welcomes comments and suggestions about the proposals at consultations.tfl.gov.uk/roads/st-leonards by Sunday 29 October 2017. What are the plans? For pedestrians • Relocate the controlled crossing at the junction. At the moment there is poor visibility between people using the southern unsignalised crossing and oncoming motorists. By relocating the signal- controlled crossing that is currently north of the junction to the proposed new location south where demand is higher, and by making it a straight-across signal-controlled crossing,TfL can make it safer for all road users. This relocated crossing would replace the existing unsignalised crossing on the southern arm and the crossing north of the junction where there is significantly lower demand • Create a raised imprint block-paved effect crossing on Gleneldon Road indicating to drivers that pedestrians are likely to be crossing making it easier and safer for people approaching the relocated crossing. For cyclists • Cycling would be permitted in the proposed bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens (see overleaf). • 22. www.heartstreatham.co.uk22 For bus passengers • Introduce a bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens approaching the junction by removing some parking. 15 high-frequency bus routes pass through the junction. Delays resulting from the new crossing would be mitigated by a new 170 metre bus lane on Tooting Bec Gardens approaching the junction. There are often gaps in the parking so the proposal minimises the overall loss of parking spaces and makes more efficient use of the space • Ban the right-turn into and out of Shrubbery Road on Streatham High Road. Northbound buses are currently delayed by vehicles turning right into Shrubbery Road, approximately 150 metres north of the junction, because of a short right-turn pocket in the road.TfL therefore proposes to ban the right-turn from Streatham High Road into Shrubbery Road for all traffic. There would also be a longer right-turn pocket to allow vehicles to queue without blocking traffic when turning into Sunnyhill Road.Vehicles turning right out of Shrubbery Road can also delay southbound traffic including buses so it is proposed that is banned too.The banned turns will only be implemented if needed.TfL would monitor congestion and bus delays to confirm if they are needed to mitigate the impact of the relocated crossing and making it controlled and will publish its findings • TfL would need to extend the right-turn ban from Mitcham Lane into Streatham High Road southbound to include buses. This won’t have an impact on bus passengers as this turn is only used by buses 'not in service'. By fully banning the turn it reduces the traffic impact of the relocated crossing and making it controlled. TfL would coordinate the crossing relocation with planned work to modernise the traffic signals with pedestrian countdown (telling you how long you have left to start to cross) and resurface the junction, which will save delays and disruption. The plans form part of the Mayor of London’s plan for Healthy Streets - a long-term vision to encourage more Londoners to walk, cycle and use public transport by making London’s streets healthier, safer and more welcoming. By providing more safer space we can encourage more people to use these healthy and sustainable forms of transport, whilst keeping other traffic moving. These improvements will contribute to Healthy Streets by: • Improving road safety, in particular for pedestrians and cyclists • Encouraging more people to walk • Improving the public realm and contributing to the wider regeneration of the area • Maintaining reliable bus services. TfL expects there will be some delays in journey times and some improvements – see the website for the detail. It will monitor the impacts of the relocated crossing and will continue to work with Lambeth Council and the local community to develop further improvements along Streatham High Road. The aim is to start work on the junction by January 2018 for completion by spring 2018. Please give TfL your comments about the proposals for the junction and suggestions for other changes it might consider by 29 October 2017. • 24. www.heartstreatham.co.uk24 Dr Nilu reveals the Kardashian secret to silky smooth skin When you need to look your best like the Kardashian sisters, with beautifully silky smooth, hair free skin the go-to treatment is laser hair removal; as offered here at the Brigstock Skin and Laser Centre. Kim Kardashian used laser removal on the hair on her forehead. "If you Google 2008 or 2007, I had the craziest, hairiest hairline, so I did laser it." Khloe Kardashian used laser hair removal on her legs, bikini area and underarms, "No nasty ingrown hairs. I laser my bikini line. I even laser my legs. It's so much easier than having to shave every single day." Their younger sisters, Kendall and Kylie Jenner are also fans of this long-lasting hair removal treatment. Model, Kendall, says she used the treatment to "[get] all the hair off my body". Kylie, the youngest member of the family, has openly described laser hair removal as "life changing". We at the Brigstock Centre completely agree! Why laser hair removal? The treatment uses a laser machine to zap away hair from the root. The laser light reacts with the melanin in the hair follicle and gradually kills off each hair from the root. Unlike shaving, waxing, or epilating, once the hair follicle has been treated, it will usually die. When hair does occasionally grow back, it tends to be finer than before, and easily removed with a quick laser session. Laser hair removal is suitable for all skin types. Brigstock clients have been blown away by the results:- "The hair removal has been very effective and has immensely improved my confidence and self-esteem. I highly recommend this treatment and continue to see amazing results." "I started to see results from the first session and after 6 sessions I'm now less hairy on my body." " My skin is much smoother and there is much less hair growth on the treated areas. As well as this I have realised that my skin is much fairer as the previous dark patches on my skin have now reduced and my skin tone is much more even throughout. If you'd like to find out more about laser hair removal and book your complimentary Brigstock Skin and Laser hair removal patch test, call us on 020 8683 6730 or go to the Brigstock Skin and Laser website to book your appointment today.

  • 30. www.heartstreatham.co.uk30 Streatham Sparkle in September Streatham IHC have started their first season in the second tier of UK hockey since the 1990’s, and take on their toughest test in years with a new look team. Coach Jeremy Cornish has recruited some exciting signings including MK Lightning stars Adam Carr and Michael Farn, Hull Pirates forward Ryan Watt, and all- star forward Aidan Doughty. Streatham are now competing with teams that have played at a higher level -Swindon Wildcats, Basingstoke Bison, Peterborough Phantoms and Bracknell Bees, and got off to a great start winning three of the four opening games. Coach Cornish, from Ontario, Canada was famous as a player for being one of the toughest, however his coaching style is one of discipline, with quick agile skilled players, backed by those who can drop the gloves when needed like Brandon Miles who has already fought three times this season and added goals to his game too. Despite the feisty nature of the sport on the ice at times, the atmosphere off it is always friendly, with fans of both teams mixing well with lots of fun antics such as period break SCORO, where a member of the crowd gets the chance to win a cash prize by stepping on to the ice and firing at goal from the halfway line. Ice hockey is very exciting to watch and Streatham IHC are keen to invite you to come and experience a game. • 34. www.heartstreatham.co.uk34 Streatham Police Update By: inSPecTor TereSa HUBBarD It’s been a busy month already this autumn. Our officers seized another dangerous weapon potentially saving a life. They had responded to an emergency call to Police about a pending fight when they were able to take a knife with a 10-inch blade off the street, and probably just in the nick of time. Later in the month, PC's Collette Daoud, Vincente, Therza-Gonzales and Sam Aston from Streatham dealt with a difficult person in a mental health crisis during which they were bombarded with missiles whilst trying to help. They showed tremendous professionalism, courage and compassion. All in a day’s work! In news from nearby teams, we can report the Gipsy Hill and Knights Hill teams have made arrests and confiscated quantities of drugs believed to be heroin and cannabis after several incidents, one of which followed a foot chase. Drugs in these areas affect Streatham as well. Thanks to everyone who attended the Borough Commanders meeting last week to get more information about the possible closure of Police Stations and Front Offices. Your questions and representations were appreciated by our South Lambeth Police Team and it was a good opportunity to pass on thoughts to the Mayor’s Office on Policing and Crime (MOPAC) representative. I can personally attest to the excellent job Esther and Jed do in our Streatham Patrol base, and we have heard the same from many members of the public.
