We hope you enjoyed the Streatham Festival
this summer!. The variety and quality on offer was
amazing and we’re very grateful to the small band
of volunteers who somehow make it all happen
every year, as well as the large and diverse group
of businesses and organisations that sponsor,
host, and support it.
Speaking of gratitude, the community came
together to fund the Streatham Common Co-
operative (SCCoop) keeping the paddling pool
on the common open this year. It was a welcome
place to take the kids after watching the superb
Birds of Prey exhibition on the Common.
In July, we were proud to be Streathamites
when, in response to an unprecedented rise in
the number of people being racially abused and
made to feel unsafe in our community, a group
called Streatham Stands Together made a
visible stand against racism in our community.
With the permission of SCCOop, they created
5. www.heartstreatham.co.uk 5
a Love Board along the Rookery fence, where
messages, artwork, photos, flowers were pinned
to demonstrate that our diverse community unites
in solidarity to reject racism. This sparked local
choir leader Xenia Davis’s idea of organising
Singing for Unity at the Streatham Love Wall and
other locations to bring people together to sing
and celebrate unity and diversity. “It is up to us all
to create the kind of open, welcoming and tolerant
society that we want to live in, and I’m really proud
that the people who have taken part in Singing
for Unity event have done just that.” Said Xenia.
Just after we went to press for Issue 24, a lively
and packed Crossrail 2 Public Meeting was
held at the Hideaway. Streatham Action secured
3 key members of the GLA including the chair of
the transport committee, Caroline Pidgeon, and
Lambeth’s head of transport, Jennifer Brathwaite
and Sian Berry. They took to heart the needs
and demands of the community and the case for
Streatham to be on the CR2 route and promised
they would take these issues to the very top on
our behalf.
Finally, we were honoured to attend the stone
laying for Streatham’s Somme Victoria Cross
recipient, Lt Geoffrey Cather. The service was
moving, not least by the presence of Lance Sgt
Johnson Beharry, one of six living VC recipients.
Sgt Beharry attends any investiture of VC
awardees as a matter of personal commitment.
We also thank Marion Gower for her historical
research into Lt Cather’s contributions and
Streatham connections.

We welcome the new Polish bar restaurant
and music club, Mikrus, to the High Road
near the Bartek grocery. Not only will it feature
traditional Polish food, beer, and music
including karaoke, the craftsmanship being put
into the exterior facade is amazing.
Mes Amis Cafe is expected to open soon
on Leigham Court Road. This will be a fine
addition to the quality shops in that parade
including Kennedy’s, Fish Tale and Continental
Organics.
Also in Streatham Hill, we’re very excited
about Streatham getting its first official wine
bar when the Streatham Wine House opens
later this month. The bar has been funded by
an innovative crowdfunding campaign that
included many local folk and staffed by three
friends who are expert sommeliers who host
wine-tasting and education courses around
the country. The tally of boutique shops in
Streatham Hill continues to grow!
Watch for the launch of the Bonfire Fund from
the Friends of Streatham Common, who will
be raising money to continue the tradition of
having a community bonfire on the Common
from year-to-year. Donations and sponsors
are needed to help raise the £5000 needed to
make this happen.
We want to congratulate our local MP, Chuka
Umunna, on his marriage to Alice Sullivan
last month. We wish them a wonderful future
together and hear they will be looking for
bigger digs when they return from honeymoon.
We will have updates in future issues on
planning for the South London Islamic Centre,
a new coffee shop opening next to Art &
Craft on Drewstead Road, confirmation of
new tenants for the old Morrison’s premises
(currently rumoured to be M&S), and new
tenants for the bit of the London Square
development not taken by M&S.

It’s been a busy summer, and we’ve tried to
keep tabs on developments and the bits that
sometimes sneak past us around this time
of year. This Soapbox is a roundup of issues
that have come across our desks since the
end of June.
Wandsworth Council has launched a
consultation on how to manage the declining
health of an historic avenue of chestnut trees
on Tooting Common. Chestnut Avenue is
around 140-150 years old, and at this age,
the council says chestnuts are approaching
the end of their natural lifespan. An in-depth
survey has recommended a programme of
work including the removal of five trees and
a further 26 trees require extensive works.
There are different ways the council could
manage the situation, and they want to hear
residents’ and stakeholders’ views on these
different options. Read about the options and
have your say in the consultation at consult.

TfL announced in July that it wishes to
convert part of the southbound High Road
from the Arriva bus garage to Barcombe
Avenue into a new bus lane operating
Monday-Friday 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm
They would extend the operating hours for
the existing section of bus lane on Streatham
Hill starting after the junction with Barcombe
Avenue and ending before the junction with
Amesbury Avenue. The operating hours
would be extended from Monday-Friday
4pm-7pm to Monday-Friday 7am-10am and
4pm-7pm

Almost 4 years ago the Business
Improvement District Steering Group met
with the Lambeth Community Markets team
about launching a market on Streatham
Green. The stated intention by Lambeth was
to give the BID management of the market
once the BID. 4 years on and there is now a
BID, but they have no management control,
and the council are now looking for a new
market operator. Given current difficulties in
Lambeth Council (Parks, Health, and other
departments are rumoured to be in lockdown
over taking services back in house), it seems
a good time to share responsibility for things
that aren’t critical council infrastructure and
use local know how to solve local problems.

New Theatre Operators Shortlist
Developer London Square has shortlisted three
potential operators from a list of nineteen for the
new theatre at its Streatham Hill development.
- LOST Theatre – A company with a youth
theatre focus who currently operate from a
venue on Wandsworth Road.
- N16 Limited – A Balham-based company
that has outgrown its current base at the
Bedford Arms.
- ThinkTank – A consortium of local residents
which has come together specifically for this
opportunity.
The Theatres Trust, David Hughes Architects,
and Chris Moore (Managing Director of ACL
Consultancy) were involved in the tendering
process on behalf of London Square. “We were
overwhelmed with the number of very high
quality Stage One tenders" commented Chris.
Shortlisted operators will take part in a site visit
and workshop, before submitting their final
applications and being interviewed. The chosen
operator should be announced this month, with
the venue due to open in December 2017.
Mark Smith, Development Director, London
Square, said: “We are very excited to be helping
to continue the tradition of live performance on
the site while creating a venue that will bring
a new cultural focus to the area.” The new
theatre will continue a tradition of entertainment
on the site, whilst the historic Art Deco façade
of the former Gaumont Palace cinema – a
local landmark which has marked the corner of
Streatham Hill and Ardwell Road since 1932 – is
preserved
Marks & Spencer will be the anchor tenants of
the new high street retail space, with a Food
hall with coffee shop, and will occupy the
ground floor of the former Megabowl site at
the corner of Streatham Hill and Ardwell Road.
There is still availability, and additional tenants
will be announced in the coming months.

SW16's Ghostly Composers
BY David wright
Rosemary Brown was a composer, pianist,
and spirit medium who claimed that dead
composers dictated new musical works to
her. She was born in 1916 and attended the
Streatham County Secondary School, whose
buildings were eventually absorbed into
Graveney School.
Rosemary took some piano lessons when
younger, but in 1964 claimed to have
had contact with Franz Liszt, claiming he
controlled her hands at the piano for a few
bars at a time, and then she wrote down the
notes.
She also began transcribing original
compositions she said were dictated to her by
Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Grieg, Debussy,
Schumann, and Mozart. These included a
40-page sonata she attributed to Schubert, a
Fantaisie-Impromptu in three movements she
attributed to Chopin and two sonatas and two
symphonies she attributed to Beethoven.
Rosemary became a media sensation in the
1970s when the BBC put her to the test by
sitting her at a piano and watching as she
waited for Liszt to contact her. She eventually
produced a piece that she said had been
dictated to her by the dead composer. It
proved too hard for her to play, so another
pianist was asked to play it. The piece was
subsequently studied by a Liszt expert, who
said it had definite similarities to Liszt's work.
The opinions of musical critics were varied
on the merit of Rosemary's transcriptions
but most agreed that stylistically they bore
a great resemblance to the composers'
published works. However, after studying
the compositions, psychologists came to the
conclusion they were the work of Brown's own
subconscious.
Rosemary Isabel Brown, musical medium,
died in 2001, aged 85, and took with her the
secrets of her Spirit Music and her many
friendships with her ghostly composers.

Keep 1st October in your diary! From 10 am,
Streatham Library transforms into your local
Fun Palace filled with art, drama, crafts, play
and science activities, and fun for all the whole
family for all ages. And it's FREE!
Fun Palaces are community events, where
anyone can have access to arts and science
for a weekend. Run by the community for
the community, they rely on people wanting
to get involved with their skill set. The Fun
Palace ethos is Everyone an Artist, Everyone a
Scientist
We are looking for volunteers, to either help
make the Funpalace, or to get involved in
running mini interactive workshops in a market
place setting, where people can wander from
one interactive thing to the next, or in a room for
more specialised workshops that require focus.
Last year there was vegetable carving,
pom-pom making, neuroscience, drama
and a singing workshop. This year, there'll
e a film workshop, scientific experiments, a
chess challenge, a drama workshop, singing
workshop, and much more.
If you can craft, make art, know about science
or have another skill you can bring, please get
in touch. No contribution is too small -everyone
is welcome to be involved in this fun joyous
family event.
Equally, if you have a community group or
business you want to promote, this is the ideal
place to promote it, but no money can change
hands at a Funpalace.
Streatham Library Fun Palace is an opportunity
for people to get together and have fun while
sharing/learning a skill; trying something
different; participating in activities and meeting
others. More information will be available nearer
the time @streathamlib and funpalaces.co.uk
To get involved, please email mhairi@tcollective.

Over the past two years, Streatham’s ice
hockey team have implemented a plan to move
away from the use of the Redskins by the
beginning of the 2016/17 season.
A club statement said, ‘As a progressive and
forward looking team who want to attract new
supporters, encourage more local kids to join
our junior club and create a positive image
for ice hockey within our great city we have
decided to drop the Redskins name from our
team at the end of this season."
Over the summer, the club consulted
supporters to decide the new name, and the
overwhelming favourite was to revert back to
the original Streatham IHC, dating back to the
formation of the team in 1932.
From 2016/17 the team will be known officially
as Streatham IHC. The fans were also polled
with a shortlist of four potential nicknames
(Ravens, Redhawks, Saints, and Royals),
selected from a long list of suggestions and
recently revealed that the new nickname for
Streatham IHC is 'RedHawks'.
A club spokesman said, 'We already have a
historic name in the sport and our logo and
branding is iconic, but we did feel it was
important to introduce a new nickname much
like football teams do, to turn a page in our
clubs history and to reach out to younger fans.'
