Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear all,
I have had a lovely meeting this morning,
when I met John Grundy (see below). We are
going to have the joy and privilege of John
joining us for the summer holidays. It may be
raining at the moment but there is a smile on my face.
Although it's raining the birds are busy, especially the robins who
announce their presence in our conservatory with a cheerful song.
That also brings a smile to my face.
May you be blessed with smiles.
With Christian love to you all,
Mavis
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am delighted to share greetings with you from
Northern College in Manchester.
My name is John Grundy and I will be your
student Minister on placement at Hayes Free
Church from July to the beginning of
September.
I am just ending my second year of training as a
Minister of Word and Sacraments. Alongside
college studies I have completed two years of
placements in Anglo-Catholic and Lutheran
churches as well as Chaplaincy at Liverpool Airport and Hope Plus
FoodBank. I know this looks like I've no URC background but I have
been part of this wonderfully diverse denomination of ours all of my
life. Happily, these two years have confirmed for me how important
the dissenting nature of who we are is for the whole of the church in
Britain.
I am very much looking forward to sharing in the life of Hayes Free
Church over this summer and look forward to meeting you all.
With every blessing,
John

Sunday Services
Some notes on the visiting preachers.
v Rev’d Bryn Thomas needs no introduction to many of us as he was a
former organist and choir master at HFC. He took early retirement from
teaching to become an ordained minister and still lives in West Wickham.
v Mrs. Marion Bayley is a Lay Preacher and an Elder from our sister church
in Beckenham. She regularly leads our services.
v Jim Holman is a Methodist preacher. He has conducted services at HFC
in the past.
v Alan Kienlan is well known to us. He was church secretary and an elder
at HFC. He is an accredited Lay Preacher from Emmanuel URC.
v Mike Tinson is a Methodist preacher. He has conducted services at HFC
in the past.
v Rev’d Peter Stevenson is the Minister of Crossways URC Church at the
Elephant and Castle. This Church has a long and rich history of serving
the community for almost 150 years. For example, the South London
Mission was established at Elephant and Castle by the London
Congregational Union in 1866.
v David Lemmon is a Methodist Lay Preacher who has taken a number of
services at HFC.
All of the evening services will take place in the Elders Vestry
which is accessed from side door in Hilldown Road.

Editor’s Notes
This is an appeal
I find that the time is approaching for me to hand over
editorship of Catalyst to someone else.
I have been editor since July 2007, and believe that someone
else should take on this rewarding job. Fresh ideas and a new
approach to the production of Catalyst would be welcome.
Ideally, I would like to hand over during the summer break,
when Catalyst covers July and August, ready for the new editor
to produce the September edition. If you can use a Desk Top
Publishing programme, this would be great, but its not essential.
I use Serif PagePlus which is brilliant for combining graphics,
tables and text. I am most willing to help you with the handover.
Please contact me through the usual channels.

Straight through my heart this fact
to-day,
By Truth’s own hand is driven:
God never takes one thing away,
But something else is given.
I did not know in earlier years,
This law of love and kindness;
I only mourned through bitter
tears
My loss, in sorrow’s blindness.
But, ever following each regret
O’er some departed treasure,
My sad repining heart was met
With unexpected pleasure.
I thought it only happened so;
But time this truth taught me –
No least thing from my life can go,
But something else is brought to
me.
It is the Law, complete, sublime;
And now, with Faith unshaken,
In patience I but bide my time
When any joy is taken.
No matter if the crushing blow
May for the moment down me,
Still, back of it waits Love, I know
With some new gift to crown me.
Ella Wheeler Wilcox
An Appeal
----------
We are looking for a volunteer(s) to spend an hour on the
Churches Together in Hayes stall at Hayes Fair on Saturday 11th
June.
Laurie and I have done it for the last few years but will be unable
to do so this year due to other commitments.
It's a very pleasant hour and we take turns with St. Mary's and the
Rosary Church.
If anyone is interested could you please see me.
Many thanks
Sylvia.
Recompense
-----------
Ella Wheeler Wilcox (November 5, 1850–October 30, 1919) was an
American author and poet. Her best-known work was Poems of
Passion, and her autobiography, The Worlds and I, was published in
1918 shortly before her death.
A popular rather than a literary poet, her poems express sentiments of
cheer and optimism in plainly written, rhyming verse.

Your Page
This page will be kept for YOUR contributions - NOTHING ELSE will go on this page.
Hopefully, you will be inspired to share some pictures, poetry or stories.
It would be great to receive items
from other groups - Mothers and
Toddlers, the cubs, brownies, and
Church Clubs. Also, family
members are most welcome to
submit material.
Uniformed groups - can your
members earn a badge for
contributions to this page?
Pictures, poems, letters or thoughts
are all welcome.
Leaders - please encourage your
charges to be creative. Catalyst
has wonderful material from the
adult members and friends, but this
magazine should be for all of us to
enjoy. Also, isn’t it nice to see your
message or creation in print?
Surely, an important aspect of our
lives is to encourage the
youngsters to develop - to be
creative. So, this page is here to
help with this.
Your prayers for inclusion in
Catalyst will appear on this page.

CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2016
----------
Following the decisions of the April church meeting, the Festival will run
from Friday 2 December 2016 to Sunday 11 December 2016, in aid of
Carers Bromley, which operates across this borough. The programme
is already beginning to fall into place, but there will be more news of
that later on. So for this month, here is some more information about
the charity and its work.
The term “carer” can cover a variety of different roles, but the type of
person who is supported by this charity is defined in this way:
”someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a
friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage otherwise
because of frailty, illness or disability”. So – the person helped has a
significant need, probably requiring substantial help (“could not
manage otherwise”) and the person doing the caring is doing it for
someone with whom they have a personal connection – they are not
undertaking formal voluntary work. Many of these carers are
committed permanently and full-time, and this can have an impact
on them in many areas, including health (mental as well as physical),
and income. They may well be living alone with a relative or close
friend who needs their attention “24/7”, and this can be very isolating.
They may have had to give up work, or at best go part-time; many
are almost permanently on call, and sometimes woken several times
at night – but whatever happens they have to keep going, and
present a cheerful face to their friend or relative. For many their worst
nightmare is - what will happen if they themselves fall ill? Often it is
only through the care they give that the person cared for can
continue to live at home – which is usually the place where they
would most wish to be, among the people they would most wish to
be with. So by helping the carers to keep going, Carers Bromley
supports people across the borough who are suffering from a whole
range of serious illnesses and disabilities.
Practical help can be given in a number of ways. It may be up-to-
date legal advice about the benefits carers can claim or what help
they are entitled to from employers; training on how to move frail
people between beds, chairs etc without hurting either the moved or
the mover; or a volunteer to take over for a few hours and give the
carer a break; a drop-in coffee morning, or trips and outings for those
who are able to get out for a little while; information about little-
known facilities for the person they care for (did you know, for
Continued on the next page ......
13
instance, that opticians and even dentists can sometimes make
home visits?); and so on. Carers Bromley does all this and more.
Among those they help are 1,000 young carers (under 18). I am
already getting some very positive responses about our choice of
charity, and am looking forward to next December!

KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
------------------------
If you enjoyed the clarinet and poetry duo who performed “Twas the
Night before Christmas” during last year’s Christmas Tree Festival, you
might like to know that they will be in the area again on Saturday 18th
June, for a World War I recital (“Keep the Home Fires Burning”) at
Bromley Parish Church, starting at 11.30. (Free admission with retiring
collection – there is a concert every month)

The way things once were
The food theme continues this year with recipes from the First World
War. Hopefully, a useful collection will develop throughout the year.
The source of the recipes is the “Win-the-war” cookery book.
The Win-The-War cookery Book, 1917, published by the Amalgamated
Press for the Food Economy Campaign, with the approval of the
Ministry of Food, contains food saving and other tips on domestic
economy. So, this month, we are taking a break from them to dip
into one such page with advice which, with a little tweaking, carries
messages which apply to our modern world.

To the Women of Britain
The British fighting-line shifts and extends, and now you are in it.
The struggle is not only on land and sea; it is in your larder, your kitchen,
and your dining-room.
Every meal you serve is now literally a battle.
Every well-cooked meal that saves bread and wastes no food is a
victory.
Our soldiers are beating the Germans on land.
Our sailors are beating the Germans on the sea.
You can beat them in the larder and the kitchen.
Victory in the food-fight will turn the scale.
You are fighting for the children.
The living children are calling to you to give them food, safety, and
freedom.
The unborn children are calling to you to give them a world free from
the poison of Prussianism.
Will you fail the children?

THE PILGRIMS AND THE PEAS
-------------------
A brace of sinners, for no good,
Were ordered to the Virgin Mary's shrine,
Who at Loretto dwelt, in wax, stone,
wood,
And, in a fair white wig, looked wondrous
fine.
Fifty long miles had these sad rogues to
travel,
With something in their shoes much worse
than gravel;
In short, their toes so gentle to amuse,
The priest had ordered peas into their
shoes:
A nostrum famous in old Popish times,
For purifying souls when foul with crimes;
A sort of apostolic salt
That Popish priests did for its powers exalt
For keeping souls of sinners sweet,
Just as our kitchen-salt keeps meat.
The knaves set off on the same day,
Peas in their shoes, to go and pray;
But very different was their speed, I wot.
One of the sinners galloped on,
Light as a bullet from a gun;
The other limped as if he had been shot.
One saw the Virgin soon— “ Peccavi "
cried—
Had his soul whitewashed all so clever;
Then home again he nimbly hied,
Made fit, with saints above, to live for
ever.
In coming back, however, let me say,
He met his brother rogue about half way.
Hobbling, with outstretched neck and
bending knees,
And muttering—not blessings—on the
peas;
His eyes in tears, his weary limbs dead
beat,
And sympathizing with his aching feet.
Continued on the next page .....
17
“ How now? ” the light-toed, whitewashed
pilgrim broke;
“ You lazy lubber ? ”—
“ Oh! mercy! " cried the other, “ ’tis no
joke
My feet, once hard as any rock,
Are now as soft as blubber!
Excuse me, Virgin Mary, if I swear,
As for Loretto, I shall not go there;
No! though unshrived my sinful soul
should go,
For, hang me, if I hav’n’t lost every toe.
But, brother sinner, do explain
How ’tis that you are not in pain;
What power hath worked a wonder for
your toes,
Whilst I just like a snail am crawling,
Now swearing, now on saints devoutly
calling,
Whilst not a rascal comes to ease my
woes?
How is’t that you can like a greyhound
go,
Merry, as if that nought had happen'd,
burn ye? ”
“ Why? " said the other, grinning, “ you
must know
That, just before I ventured on my journey,
To walk a little more at ease
I took the liberty to boil my peas.”
Dr. John Wolcot
Published circa 1932 in a book under the
title of
"The 60 best Humorous Recitations".
I remember my grandmother reciting this
poem.

This is indicated by 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. The numbers relate to which
week day of the month, NOT the calendar date.
IF FAITH CAN MOVE A MOUNTAIN
IT CAN MOVE A LITTLE HILL,
AND YOUR PRAYERS WILL SOON BE ANSWERED
IF YOU’RE CERTAIN THAT THEY WILL.
IT MAY TAKE WEEKS OR MONTHS OR YEARS,
IT MAY NOT TAKE THAT LONG,
BUT FAITH CAN MOVE A MOUNTAIN
IF THAT FAITH IS GOOD AND STRONG.

  • 3. 1 Letter from the Church Secretary Dear all, I have had a lovely meeting this morning, when I met John Grundy (see below). We are going to have the joy and privilege of John joining us for the summer holidays. It may be raining at the moment but there is a smile on my face. Although it's raining the birds are busy, especially the robins who announce their presence in our conservatory with a cheerful song. That also brings a smile to my face. May you be blessed with smiles. With Christian love to you all, Mavis ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am delighted to share greetings with you from Northern College in Manchester. My name is John Grundy and I will be your student Minister on placement at Hayes Free Church from July to the beginning of September. I am just ending my second year of training as a Minister of Word and Sacraments. Alongside college studies I have completed two years of placements in Anglo-Catholic and Lutheran churches as well as Chaplaincy at Liverpool Airport and Hope Plus FoodBank. I know this looks like I've no URC background but I have been part of this wonderfully diverse denomination of ours all of my life. Happily, these two years have confirmed for me how important the dissenting nature of who we are is for the whole of the church in Britain. I am very much looking forward to sharing in the life of Hayes Free Church over this summer and look forward to meeting you all. With every blessing, John
  • 4. 2 Sunday Services Some notes on the visiting preachers. v Rev’d Bryn Thomas needs no introduction to many of us as he was a former organist and choir master at HFC. Barbara The Fairtrade Sunday Stall We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The stall will be held on the 12th and 26th of June. Do pop by and check what we have for sale. There are some appetising snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines. We have some new lines of cake available. Please continue to support your stall. Richard & Barbara. Editor’s Notes This is an appeal I find that the time is approaching for me to hand over editorship of Catalyst to someone else. I have been editor since July 2007, and believe that someone else should take on this rewarding job. Fresh ideas and a new approach to the production of Catalyst would be welcome. Ideally, I would like to hand over during the summer break, when Catalyst covers July and August, ready for the new editor to produce the September edition. If you can use a Desk Top Publishing programme, this would be great, but its not essential. I use Serif PagePlus which is brilliant for combining graphics, tables and text. I am most willing to help you with the handover. Please contact me through the usual channels. Richard Brown

  • 10. 8 Straight through my heart this fact to-day, By Truth’s own hand is driven: God never takes one thing away, But something else is given. I did not know in earlier years, This law of love and kindness; I only mourned through bitter tears My loss, in sorrow’s blindness. But, ever following each regret O’er some departed treasure, My sad repining heart was met With unexpected pleasure. I thought it only happened so; But time this truth taught me – No least thing from my life can go, But something else is brought to me. It is the Law, complete, sublime; And now, with Faith unshaken, In patience I but bide my time When any joy is taken. No matter if the crushing blow May for the moment down me, Still, back of it waits Love, I know With some new gift to crown me. Ella Wheeler Wilcox An Appeal ---------- We are looking for a volunteer(s) to spend an hour on the Churches Together in Hayes stall at Hayes Fair on Saturday 11th June. Laurie and I have done it for the last few years but will be unable to do so this year due to other commitments. It's a very pleasant hour and we take turns with St. Mary's and the Rosary Church. If anyone is interested could you please see me. Many thanks Sylvia. Recompense ----------- Ella Wheeler Wilcox (November 5, 1850–October 30, 1919) was an American author and poet. Her best-known work was Poems of Passion, and her autobiography, The Worlds and I, was published in 1918 shortly before her death. A popular rather than a literary poet, her poems express sentiments of cheer and optimism in plainly written, rhyming verse.
  • 11. 9 Your Page This page will be kept for YOUR contributions - NOTHING ELSE will go on this page. Hopefully, you will be inspired to share some pictures, poetry or stories. It would be great to receive items from other groups - Mothers and Toddlers, the cubs, brownies, and Church Clubs. Also, family members are most welcome to submit material. Uniformed groups - can your members earn a badge for contributions to this page? Pictures, poems, letters or thoughts are all welcome. Leaders - please encourage your charges to be creative. Catalyst has wonderful material from the adult members and friends, but this magazine should be for all of us to enjoy. Also, isn’t it nice to see your message or creation in print? Surely, an important aspect of our lives is to encourage the youngsters to develop - to be creative. So, this page is here to help with this. Your prayers for inclusion in Catalyst will appear on this page.
  • 12. 10 NOTICE SUPPORT AT HOME If you are living independently at home, but getting older and would like help with household tasks, meals, shopping or transport; or would like help using your computer, pursuing indoor interests or getting out by wheelchair or by car; or would like to give a break to someone who usually looks after you; or would like help with something not mentioned here - please get in touch with me. My goal is to maintain your independent way of life with a kind and committed service. Christopher White 020 8658 5886 or pjm741-rose@mybtinternet.com (please note - new number and email address!) HOLIDAY AT HOME …. … is coming up … and will be from the 1 — 4 August. Please publicise it to anyone you think would be interested — and to bring a friend. We have not managed to book the Hayes mini-bus this year so we are looking for offers of help with transport to get people to and from the Church. If you would like to come and join in the activities or help with transport please contact Joan Smith (8462 3920) or Pat Marshall (8462 3111).

  • 14. 12 CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2016 ---------- Following the decisions of the April church meeting, the Festival will run from Friday 2 December 2016 to Sunday 11 December 2016, in aid of Carers Bromley, which operates across this borough. The programme is already beginning to fall into place, but there will be more news of that later on. So for this month, here is some more information about the charity and its work. The term “carer” can cover a variety of different roles, but the type of person who is supported by this charity is defined in this way: ”someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, neighbour or relative who could not manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or disability”. So – the person helped has a significant need, probably requiring substantial help (“could not manage otherwise”) and the person doing the caring is doing it for someone with whom they have a personal connection – they are not undertaking formal voluntary work. Many of these carers are committed permanently and full-time, and this can have an impact on them in many areas, including health (mental as well as physical), and income. They may well be living alone with a relative or close friend who needs their attention “24/7”, and this can be very isolating. They may have had to give up work, or at best go part-time; many are almost permanently on call, and sometimes woken several times at night – but whatever happens they have to keep going, and present a cheerful face to their friend or relative. For many their worst nightmare is - what will happen if they themselves fall ill? Often it is only through the care they give that the person cared for can continue to live at home – which is usually the place where they would most wish to be, among the people they would most wish to be with. So by helping the carers to keep going, Carers Bromley supports people across the borough who are suffering from a whole range of serious illnesses and disabilities. Practical help can be given in a number of ways. It may be up-to- date legal advice about the benefits carers can claim or what help they are entitled to from employers; training on how to move frail people between beds, chairs etc without hurting either the moved or the mover; or a volunteer to take over for a few hours and give the carer a break; a drop-in coffee morning, or trips and outings for those who are able to get out for a little while; information about little- known facilities for the person they care for (did you know, for Continued on the next page ......

I am already getting some very positive responses about our choice of charity, and am looking forward to next December! • 17. 15 KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING ------------------------ If you enjoyed the clarinet and poetry duo who performed “Twas the Night before Christmas” during last year’s Christmas Tree Festival, you might like to know that they will be in the area again on Saturday 18th June, for a World War I recital (“Keep the Home Fires Burning”) at Bromley Parish Church, starting at 11.30. (Free admission with retiring collection – there is a concert every month) Christine The poster advertising the event is on page 20. Ed The way things once were The food theme continues this year with recipes from the First World War. Hopefully, a useful collection will develop throughout the year. The source of the recipes is the “Win-the-war” cookery book. The Win-The-War cookery Book, 1917, published by the Amalgamated Press for the Food Economy Campaign, with the approval of the Ministry of Food, contains food saving and other tips on domestic economy. So, this month, we are taking a break from them to dip into one such page with advice which, with a little tweaking, carries messages which apply to our modern world. Editor To the Women of Britain The British fighting-line shifts and extends, and now you are in it. The struggle is not only on land and sea; it is in your larder, your kitchen, and your dining-room. Every meal you serve is now literally a battle. Every well-cooked meal that saves bread and wastes no food is a victory. Our soldiers are beating the Germans on land. Our sailors are beating the Germans on the sea. You can beat them in the larder and the kitchen. Victory in the food-fight will turn the scale. You are fighting for the children. The living children are calling to you to give them food, safety, and freedom. The unborn children are calling to you to give them a world free from the poison of Prussianism. Will you fail the children?
  • 18. 16 THE PILGRIMS AND THE PEAS ------------------- A brace of sinners, for no good, Were ordered to the Virgin Mary's shrine, Who at Loretto dwelt, in wax, stone, wood, And, in a fair white wig, looked wondrous fine. Fifty long miles had these sad rogues to travel, With something in their shoes much worse than gravel; In short, their toes so gentle to amuse, The priest had ordered peas into their shoes: A nostrum famous in old Popish times, For purifying souls when foul with crimes; A sort of apostolic salt That Popish priests did for its powers exalt For keeping souls of sinners sweet, Just as our kitchen-salt keeps meat. The knaves set off on the same day, Peas in their shoes, to go and pray; But very different was their speed, I wot. One of the sinners galloped on, Light as a bullet from a gun; The other limped as if he had been shot. One saw the Virgin soon— “ Peccavi " cried— Had his soul whitewashed all so clever; Then home again he nimbly hied, Made fit, with saints above, to live for ever. In coming back, however, let me say, He met his brother rogue about half way. Hobbling, with outstretched neck and bending knees, And muttering—not blessings—on the peas; His eyes in tears, his weary limbs dead beat, And sympathizing with his aching feet. • 19. 17 “ How now? ” the light-toed, whitewashed pilgrim broke; “ You lazy lubber ? ”— “ Oh! mercy! " cried the other, “ ’tis no joke My feet, once hard as any rock, Are now as soft as blubber! Excuse me, Virgin Mary, if I swear, As for Loretto, I shall not go there; No! though unshrived my sinful soul should go, For, hang me, if I hav’n’t lost every toe. But, brother sinner, do explain How ’tis that you are not in pain; What power hath worked a wonder for your toes, Whilst I just like a snail am crawling, Now swearing, now on saints devoutly calling, Whilst not a rascal comes to ease my woes? How is’t that you can like a greyhound go, Merry, as if that nought had happen'd, burn ye? ” “ Why? " said the other, grinning, “ you must know That, just before I ventured on my journey, To walk a little more at ease I took the liberty to boil my peas.” Dr. John Wolcot Published circa 1932 in a book under the title of "The 60 best Humorous Recitations". I remember my grandmother reciting this poem. Ed ..... Continued from the previous page
