Letter from the Church Secretary
Dear all,
How special is each new day.
That is a statement not a question. Each new day is a gift from God
and it is up to each one of us what we do with it.
Colin and I have just had a few days away at a Warner's Leisure
Centre and each day was great, with perfect weather and 1st class
care.
It is so much easier to be up and doing when we feel well, or are with
people we love and we are enjoying what we are doing.
If we were celebrating and partying all the time it would no longer be
special. So where does that leave all the other days? When
we look out at dreadful weather, when people are on our back
demanding we do something we really would prefer not to do but
need to do. When we feel unwell or everything seems to go wrong
and you wish you hadn't got out of 'the wrong side of the bed'.
What do we make of all those 'other' days? If we can look back at the
end of each day and say 'Yes, I didn't waste today' that would be
great.
So let's see what we can do with those ordinary days :- phone a lonely
person, send a cheerful card, smile at the people we meet or if all
those ideas are just one step too far, then pray to the one God who
loves us all and pray not just for yourself but pray for somebody who is
worse off than you. If you find praying difficult then remember
God is your friend and He is longing to hear from you.
With Christian love to you all,
Mavis

Which Way to Heaven?
Reverend Billy Graham tells of a time early in his ministry when he
arrived in a small town to preach a sermon. Wanting to mail a
letter, he asked a young boy where the post office was. When
the boy had told him, Dr. Graham thanked him and said, "If
you'll come to the Baptist Church this evening, you can hear me
telling everyone how to get to heaven."
The boy replied, "I don't think I'll be there... You don't even know
your way to the post office."

The Fairtrade Sunday Stall
We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th
Sunday of each month.

Do pop by and check what we have for sale. There are some
appetising snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines. We
now some new lines of cake available.
Please continue to support your stall.
Richard and Barbara.
Editorâs Notes
Correction In the Rotary Club feature in March, the header said that it
was Beckenham Rotary whereas it was all about Langley Park Rotary
club. John Moren is in Beckenham and David Connolly is in Langley
Park, the latter being the one involved in the Antique fairs.
Back cover photograph in April. This should have printed in colour, as
seen in the electronic version of Catalyst. The hearse was seen at the
Annual Cart Marking ceremony held at the Guildhall, London. The
event is free and well worth attending.
If you wish to attend, take a folding chair, refreshments and water.
The 2016 event takes place during July - day (a weekday) to be
confirmed.
Cart marking arose from the requirement for commercial vehicles
setting down passengers or delivering goods in the City of London to
be licensed.

Ă» Ink cartridges for Deaf Access - David Connolly wishes to thank
church members and friends who have been collecting and
donating their old printer ink cartridges for Deaf Access.
Unfortunately the people who bought them from us no longer
purchase them so we have had to cease collecting them.

clothes for men and especially under pants for them.
We have a member who volunteers there and he takes them up
for us regularly. Underwear, even worn, is really needed as they
get through 70 pairs of pants a day!!! If anyone has clothing they
can donate, I will be happy to take them on a Sunday.

Please give details to the Editor if you wish to be included in the next
list.
CHRISTIAN AID WEEK - 15-21 MAY
HFC has received its usual allocation of roads for the annual house to
house collection but the known number of people willing and able to
undertake a collection is now severely depleted. If anyone is able to
step forward to do a road, please give me a ring or speak to Barbara
Jones. Alternatively if you are able to just deliver envelopes for others
to collect, this would increase our coverage. Last year, volunteers
from HFC managed to raise ÂŁ785.80 from the house to house
collections, so it is worth making the effort. Please let me know if you
can help.
Barbara will be hosting a coffee morning to raise funds for Christian
Aid on Thursday, 19 May from 10.00 am. Donations, both financial
and edible, would be much appreciated.

BOARD
Gift Aid - keep your tax position under review.
--------------------
Many Church members allow the Church to reclaim Gift Aid
on the donations they make during the year. This is the
scheme whereby the Government adds 25% to the value of
the donations. As the end of the tax year has just passed, I
thought I would prompt you to think about Gift Aid - wheth-
er you can sign up if you haven't done so already, but also
whether your personal circumstances allow you to continue
in the scheme.
Once you have signed a Gift Aid declaration, confirming
that you have paid income tax of at least the amount of tax
being claimed on all donations (not just to the Church), it
stays in force until you withdraw it. If you find that you are no
longer paying enough tax, please tell me so I stop claiming
Gift Aid on your donations.
On the other hand, if you have not signed up for Gift Aid and
are willing and able to do so, please contact me as Treasur-
er for a declaration form .

Ecumenical Cocktail in the right Spirit
---------------------
The local clergy fraternal was challenged to a new depth of
friendship by one of its members.
âI think we should show our trust in one another by confessing our
weaknesses and secret longings,â he said.
They agreed, and the Anglican Vicar began: âMy weakness,â he
admitted, âis drink. I have to keep a careful watch or I could
become an alcoholic.â
The Roman Catholic Priest was equally frank. âI miss female
company,â he said. âI would love to take out an attractive girl for
a meal and a chat but, of course, I dare not risk it.â
The Methodist Minister was encouraged to unburden himself too.
âIâm so hard up,â he said, âand my pay is so pathetic that there are
times when I feel I would like to take twenty or thirty pounds out of
the collection to buy myself a pair of shoes or something.â
By this time, a fourth member of the group was getting very
agitated, shuffling his feet and glancing at his watch 'Must go,
must go' he Said, but the others insisted that before he departed
he should also declare his weakness. 'Well', he said, 'since you insist.
My problem is that I am a great gossip and, quite honestly, I can't
wait to get out and tell all my friends the things I've just heard.â

Peace
by Rupert Brooke
(The first of his sonnets in the 1914 sequence.)
Now, God be thanked Who has matched us with His hour,
And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping,
With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary,
Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move,
And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
And all the little emptiness of love!
Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there,
Where there's no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending,
Naught broken save this body, lost but breath;
Nothing to shake the laughing heart's long peace there
But only agony, and that has ending;
And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.
The way things once were
The food theme continues this year with recipes from the First World
War. Hopefully, a useful collection will develop throughout the year.

NO EAST or WEST
In Christ there is no East or West,
In Him no South or North,
But one great Fellowship of Love
Throughout the whole wide earth.
In Him shall true hearts everywhere
Their high communion find.
His service is the golden cord
Close-binding all mankind.
Join hands then, Brothers of the Faith,
Whateâer your race may be! â
Who serves my Father as a son
Is surely kin to me.

In Him meet South and North,
All Christly souls are one in Him,

QUO VADIS?
Peter, outworn,
And menaced by the sword,
Shook off the dust of Rome;
And, as he fled,
Met one, with eager face,
Hastening cityward.
And, to his vast amaze,
It was The Lord.
"Lord, whither goest Thou?"
He cried, importunate;
And Christ replied,â
âPeter, I suffer loss.
I go to take thy place,
To bear thy cross.â
Then Peter bowed his head,
Discomforted;
There, at the Masterâs feet,
Found grace complete,
And courage, and new faith,
And turned â with Him,
To Death.
So we, â
Wheneâer We fail
Of our full duty,
Cast on Him our load, â
Who suffered sore for us,
Who frail flesh wore for us,
Who all things bore for us, â
On Christ, our Lord.

Closing Prayer
----------------
On the 3rd of April, Tony Russell closed the service he led with the
following prayer: -
You are the Body of Christ.
Go and be hands:
Reaching out to the needy;
Holding the friendless;
And willingly receiving Godâs love.
Go and be feet:
Walking the extra mile;
Striving for others;
And humbly letting Jesus wash you.
Go and be tongues:
Speaking the good news;
Welcoming all;
And allowing Godâs Spirit to speak to you.
You are the Body of Christ. Praise God.

24. A PRAYER FOR ALL SEASONS
The year keeps moving swiftly, Lord,
The weeks all slip away,
Please help us always make the most
Of each and every day.
The springtime gives us light and life
As all our hopes renew,
The summer brings the sun and rain
And we give thanks to you.
The harvest brings the golden grain
And autumn paints the trees,
The winter gives us time to share,
Bright moments we must seize.
So thank you for the seasons, Lord,
Whatever they may bring,
The colour, beauty, love and life,
And thanks for everything.
